Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain |OT2| A Franchise Robbed Of Its Future

This is easily looking like it's GOTY for me, with the exception of fallout 4 topping it, if it plays it's cards right. I am seeing the faults in this open world construct, though. As shitty as it is, I'd have preferred more story peppered between missions with these giant open levels you are just dumped to. Not having to hoof it here and there. Still, game play side? I'm, as addicted as ever. A shame this engine won't be put to more use.

After Bloodborne outlasted the Witcher 3, which is still one my all-time favorites, I sorta assumed nothing would supplant it for GOTY -- but good god damn MGSV is neck & neck(maybe even slightly ahead) with a nice chunk of the game left to go. Fallout 4 is going to have to fucking BRING IT just to get past 4th place.

Best gaming year since 2001 easily imo.

Is that in single player?

Yes, and the F.O.B. you get it late game, though. Hopefully it doesn't require one rare material like most of the other "neat" easter-eggy stuff they advertised does. :/ It's why I haven't used the
Hand of Jehuty
.

Yeah I know, but when do they tell you it's Liquid?

It was either in a late game cassette, after the truth credits or in the unfinished mission 51 (honestly it's all a blur), Ocelot talks about the Les Enfant Terribles project and says Eli (Liquid) escaped the country and David (Solid) is still in the states.

My only confusion is why they even did the test if everyone else knew Snake wasn't Big Boss. Unless they were just trying to keep up appearances.

I have not yet unlocked FOB, but I've read that players can steal your stuff even if you're offline.
What exactly can they steal? Anything that I put on the FOB and resources produced by that FOB? Or even stuff that is generated by motherbase?

Basically, what I want to know is if having FOB is worth it even with players being able to invade. Like, if the only stuff I can lose is from FOB, then my offline progress should not be hindered compared to playing offline w/o FOB forever, no? I don't really see the big deal in that case, apart from being annoying that the online surplus created by FOB can be stolen.
Maybe I'm just misunderstanding how FOB works though.

Also, at the beginning at the game there is this message:

Is that a lie because your FOB is still reachable on the servers and the next time you disconnect it will just steal everything you had? But then it MUST be only the FOB stuff, no? Otherwise how should the game take away soldiers etc. if I already had them let go during offline play and used up all the resources etc.?

There's two pots of online resources, online and offline. Now some people have said they think their offline stuff was grabbed when they didn't have enough online, but no idea if that's true. The game literally throws unprocessed material at you anyway, so it'll barely hurt any progress.

Staff can be taken, just put your best staff on direct contract and they can't be though. Basically your scrub staff become the security team, these fight for you and can be fultoned. If they're successful in infiltrating, they'll take a random selection of staff from that department they invaded who aren't under direct contract.

If you're offline when you're invaded, the gains and losses are just synced when you next connect. I adore connecting and seeing a ton of failed attempts and a ton of free processed materials for another successful defence.

No idea what would happen if you dismissed someone while offline who was stolen when you came back on.

Mentioned in Community but man Peace Walker's MB was so much cooler, why couldn't it be similar so we could explore that.

Someone has the running theory that the new Mother Base is wider/spread out for the sake of
not being attacked structually as easy
.

But yeah, no Airport, no
visiting the interrogation room
, no visiting Ocelot or other story characters. Nada. Mother Base is pretty lifeless. It seems like they had ideas but had to scrap them quickly with how Konami wanted this out the door.

I'm like 55 hours in and only up to mission 24. Holy shit, the gameplay is so cohesive, that every nook and cranny is equal or better than everything in Act 1 and 2 of MGS4.

Quick question, though
---
Does this game have a New Game Plus mode? A way where I can play through everything again (including side ops) without t/he constant nagging voice in my head saying I have to extract every soldier improve my units.

The few times I allow myself to just 'let go' and focus on just the missions, I have some of the most fun ever... but then I feel guilty because maybe I should have gotten some R&D specialist that allows me to get that upgrade I've been waiting for.

No new game plus, but all the missions are repeatable and side ops become available again.

I'm on episode 7, and the majesty of that intro hasn't been captured again. Doubt it will. Game opened on a whole different level. A very story-heavy level too, so it's weird the rest of the game proper is so different.

Staff with the troublemaker stat cause the fighting. If they're not shit hot stat wise get rid of them.

I guess Diplomats can help.

One of the game tips also said that it's ok to have TWO troublemakers within one unit because then they will be occopied with each other and have zero effect on the rest of the staff.
But I don't know if that means you just need have an even numbers of people with that trait. Also, there are like 3 different variants.

Thanks! Already put the best ones on direct contact in each unit.
So I guess some things are still not 100% clear.
But it sounds like it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. I wonder why they have that server message, though. It's not exactly how it works then.

This is my stance on it so far as well. I'm in episode 11 and story wise not much has happened. The pacing feel weird for a MGS game. Afghanistan appears to be so empty too. It seems that doing the side OPS I have seen most of the map too.

when do you start getting rank s combat people? I have a key dispatch mission, but all my A/A+ rank guys are only getting 53% success probability

The jeep controls are really fun. This game could've used some chasing/driving/racing missions.

For fuck's sake, put that open world to use.

I created my own chase missions, but yeah I know what you mean. I wish you could shoot from the Jeep.

Yeah I really don't understand why the platforms are arbitrarily 10 miles away from each other. It just makes getting around a big hassle and really has no benefit. Unless it's a tech issue where they couldn't all be loaded simultaneously.

I remember way back Kojima suggested that they were considering implementing asynchronous online stuff similar to Sleeping Dogs, where you could challenge records of other players and friends or race with their ghosts from one location to another and so on. It was probably technical constrains which limited what they could do. Judging from how amazingly stable the Konami servers are so far... it was probably for the best. :p

I think invading people is not for me. When I get caught I always get nervous and start killing everyone, losing my hero points. :(

Yeah I had to play offline for most of week one... But they seem okay now. :p

Yeah, makes sense.
MB was pretty much taken out in one hit and now the six bases around it probably are full of air radars so that MB would always have extra time to react.

But yes, I have the feeling that there was more planned on MB. There could've been a lot more cool events. In fact later in the game
second chapter
the events go to the rate I expected for the whole game.

Can someone explain FOB to me because this shit is the most complicated fucking thing......

So If I get "invaded", what can they steal from me exactly? R&D staff? GMP? Why do I want to build this thing?

And If I'm in the middle of a mission, if I go back to protect my base, I lose ALL progress on my mission?

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
"To be continued"

Hhahahahaha, the cringe. Honestly, I like the side ops and overall feeling of the game as much as anyone else but the main story is fucking abysmal, both from a cutscene AND gameplay perspective.

Holy shit, it's so, so bad - and I consider MGS1-4 the pinacle of VG story telling.

They can steal all your staff, except direct contracts and certain default locked ones like Hideo and your unprocessed materials (all of them in theory). Do not put your EEEEEE guys to the defense. When they reach the goal, they steal 10 soldiers from your whole pool, the guards themselves can be extracted extra.

Also the game forces you to build a FOB. At some point it ask you to do the FOB tutorial which invovles building a FOB and that you can't cancel.

Mission 45 isn't really supported by the game's mechanics very well, is it?
Every vehicle eats up almost an entire volly of rockets to destroy, 3-4 vehicles per wave, some of which will one shot you and force you to restart the maddening process all over again. You have to constantly fiddle with your iDroid to get a supply drop off at a halfway decent location, or wait for a plot flare grenade to pop and force you towards a less than stellar spot to grab more rockets. Or you can find the randomly hidden boxes strewn about the area, but they aren't very well telegraphed so it's really just clumsily stumbling until you eventually find them.

What makes this so aggrivating is that even though I've built up some explosives to be prepared for something like this, I feel like Mission 45 is punishing me for not investing enough into weapons I otherwise would have no use for. And, with the lack of telegraphing that there would be tanks, I was ill prepared from the getgo and had to slowly rekit myself. There's also no option to abort the mission and return to the ACC, so I can't do anything until I find a way to push through this. It's poor game design and a pointless exercise in frustrating the player.

Is there a chance that this whole Konami/Kojima fallout is actually just another Kojima work? #teamcg
Yes! I honestly think this, I know one person inside Kojima Productions, and they say he's still there (I didn't push him for details for obvious reasons), but the whole thing stinks of marketing stunt. The fact they pulled his name from the box yet his name is all over the game feels like something he would do, meta-trolling.

I can understand if Konami management and Kojima had a falling over out length of Dev, budgets (5+ years with a large team isn't cheap!). But I think the whole thing has been blown massively out of proportion by the media and been played on by Kojima and co. You guys seriously don't believe that at Konami they make senior staff clean toilets if they step out of line do you?

It's almost like everyone's forgotten the Moby Dick Studios stunt that had everyone going for months.

I wouldn't be surprised if P.T. sneaks it's way back onto the PS Store eventually.

Do you recommend I just ignore this shit some how? Or just do it? Is it as bad as it sounds?

I don't know what to do.

Where's my zoo???

Call in a heli from Motherbase and press Triangle/Y/whatever it is on PC to switch to the animal conservation platform. It's boring as hell though. Totally worthless addition to the game.

Reposting for new page:

I have a question about this END GAME Quiet stuff, if someone wouldn't mind answering:

When she leaves, is it part of the story? Like, is there a cutscene showing her go- with BB/Kaz/Ocelot etc. reacting to it, or does the story build to a point where is makes sense for her to go, and then she's just no longer available?

Basically, am I going to miss out on some part of the story by keeping her around?

It's all based around heroism. The higher that is, the better soldiers you'll see in the field.
I have 600000 and I still had a long horn/debris on a subsistence mission. It's quite shocking to play with the long horn when you've been tranq'ing throughout the game. Very odd.

Yeah it's quite a lot of story and the end to that particular plot thread. You are definitely supposed to see it and it's intended as the second to last mission

Best chance you got is to just have the Command Platform and upgrade it twice, so you have three platforms. Give it the best defense with drones, mines and very aware soldiers. Very few people actually manage to defeat this basic defense. So far my simple FOB held against every invader while I got around and leeched from people who leave their base basically undefended.

Yeah I really don't understand why the platforms are arbitrarily 10 miles away from each other. It just makes getting around a big hassle and really has no benefit. Unless it's a tech issue where they couldn't all be loaded simultaneously.

My guess? It's a limitation due to the game being on previous gen consoles. Too many platforms too close together would probably put too much geometry into view, and too many NPCs in one place during FOB invasions.

I can't think of any other compelling reason to spread things out so much.
