Ok so I beat the game. *inhales*
I found the game to be absolutely stellar and one of the best titles this year. It takes all of the attributes from previous MGS games and enhances them to the nth degree while also adding in a lot of new content and interesting features.
+There is an amazing diversity in the gameplay. Even though you go to the same areas multiple times, it doesn't feel redundant due to how dynamic each base can be, the sheer amount of gear and tools you can use, a day/night system that actually makes a difference etc. The game gives you so much to work with that it doesn't feel like a puzzle where you have to do exactly the right thing to progress, but instead a true sandbox where you can experiment.
+The missions are so rich in content and can be quite challenging. Sometimes after I complete a mission with 2/6 objectives done, I wonder what else there could have been. Then the game reveals some tasks I had no idea I could have done and makes me eager to try it again. They are definitely designed to be played more than once, which adds great replay value.
+The buddies are a fun addition. Each one is worth using and serve to compliment your gameplay style. Quiet is undoubtedly the best and most broken, but broken in a fun way and not in an annoying way.
+Weapon customization is one of the more underrated features of this game. There are so many weapons to use in this game, but you won't find the perfect one until you customize them. This encourages you to develop weapons you may not need, but it has some part that you'd like to add to your custom creation.
+The game looks and sounds wonderful. The lighting is especially impressive. The soundtrack is also memorable, both licensed songs and original ones.
+Though the side ops may sound boring, many of them are cleverly designed with unique enemy placement and clever obstacles. One of my favorites was when the enemy snipers tried to lure you out into a swamp with decoys. Since they aren't scored, you can experiment in ways that may be too risky for main missions.
+/- It didn't really feel like an open world game, but a hub based one. You basically just warp to different hubs and while you can technically explore anywhere, there's no reason for it since there's nothing to do or see. I don't think this is necessarily bad, but a lot of areas seem kind of pointless.
+/- Not too many indoor areas. It would have been a good mix up to have a few big indoor bases to explore, similar to how Snake Eater took place in larger environments but still made you go into the science facility and change up your gameplay.
+/- Security cameras were a non-factor. I think I saw one. They were pretty annoying in GZ, but I think they could have made one fun camera-focused area.
+/- Mother Base looked cool and it was fun seeing it expand, but there was nothing to do there.
-The story... I don't see how anyone could be happy with this. There were some interesting characters and themes, but none of them were fully expanded upon. Kojima seemed like he wanted put four games worth of topics into one. Not to mention the headache-inducing contradictions it has with the other games. Not small nitpicks either, I'm talking major events and character motivations being completely changed.
-The camo system was so bad. You really only needed desert fox for Afghanistan, woodland for Africa, battle dress for combat missions, and maybe the sneaking suit if you wanted to mix it up. Since you had no idea about the layout of the areas you were being dropped into (a color topographical map would've been useful), there is no reason to try other camos. They should at least have let us switch camos from a menu on the field, or allowed us to bring two or three with us.
-The controls were much better than in GZ, but still rather clunky. All this right stick flicking made selecting weapons a chore. Not to mention selecting things through your iDroid.
-Waiting in real time for stuff to develop is absolutely pointless. Why is this in the game? To keep us playing? The game is already absurdly long, we don't need more reasons to keep playing. Does Konami think that we want mobile game features because mobile games are popular? They aren't popular because you have to wait hours for the smallest thing.
