I'm enjoying the game - and the bits of story thus far - but the constant hate the game is getting is making me depressed and start to slow down. I just started Chapter 2 and i'm basically being told by everyone that it goes downhill from here. :/

Don't visit these threads so often until you finished the game and made up your own mind.

Just keep playing. Your opinion could still differ from all the hate. The mission structure in chapter 2 is kinda meh, but I still enjoyed it and didn't hate the ending. One of the best, if not the best missions in the game is in chapter 2.

I only just realised last night that I can Sell off the resources weapons and vehicles I have collected.

What don't I need much of? I have 2404 precious metals but do I need to keep them? What about the vehicles? Do you ever need to use them for a mission? I'm on mission 13.

Can someone explain to me how the automatic mining works or when unprocessed -> processed.

If I'm doing something else can I just casually check into my idroid while on the helicopter every so often and it will process materials?

Just beaten mission
46
. Already figured out who is who thanks to Internet. i'm just going to Play Mgs2 and 3 and wait until MGO goes online and fuck FOB and it's wallhacks..

Some weapons/items can be developed with precious metals so you may want to keep some and not sell all of them. Vehicles/gun emplacements/turrets are good to sell, especially the emplacements/anti-air turrets as you make more off of them than how much you lose fultoning them.

I would at least keep one vehicle, though, just in case you do end up needing it for a mission or something.

You don't have to complete the missions, just quit to ACC and any of the optional objectives you've completed will be saved. Only dying or restarting the mission resets them.

So knowing that, tip: If you have two really hard objectives in one mission, complete one and then quit to ACC so that one will be saved and you can focus entirely on the other one.
Awesome, thanks so much for the reply! Going to make the 100% a lot easier and more fun.

So I've finished Mission 32 and it feels like this is just an extended post-game that'll lead to a true end (or like whatever you had in Peace Walker with ZEKE, Mother Base expansion and the escape prisoner). Although I do appreciate that there are still cutscenes going so it makes it feel like it's ramping up to something.

I have no idea what to do to start Mission 20.
Do I have to talk to Huey in the Battle Gear Hanger and if so, how?

No, you can't talk to him. Everything involving
Huey and the Battle Gear Hangar
is placed extremely awkward into the game's narrative. It's presented as if you're supposed to do something, but you can't and never will. You're just supposed to go there and look at the thing, I suppose.

Call in the chopper and go to the ACC to start the actual mission.

If you have given her 10 photos you'll find an 11th photo in the hallway outside her room.

You know what to do with that.

Battle Gear
is required by the harder Dispatch Missions though

Well sure, but that's such an insignificant part considering how important the game makes it seem, regularly making you check in and everything.

There aren't even any
customization options like you had with Zeke in Peace Walker.
It's a complete waste of time. Not to mention it's grossly underpowered. Check this screenshot I made:

These success percentages are insane.

So, I've been avoiding these threads in order to avoid spoilers, but I kind of can't believe my reaction to this game and needed to see if I'm alone in this.

Is this game bad?

I'm about 15 hours in, and I realize I'm no longer having fun. I'm a huge fan of the series, so when reviews of MGSV came out from sites I respect, I thought this would be a masterpiece. Maybe my expectations were too high. I don't know. I've been thinking a lot about why I'm not having fun, and I think it comes down to two related things:

1) The missions are too disconnected from one another. The story doesn't bridge the missions. Instead, the story is what happens elsewhere (between missions, in tape messages, etc).

2) Everything you do outside of the missions is tedious. The further I progress, the more time I have to devote to managing my base. I wouldn't mind if it were better designed and more integrated into a coherent whole, but it's so peripheral to the missions and is so incomprehensible in its mechanics and systems, that I've grown to dread spending time with this part of the game.

Am I alone? I really am not looking to pick the game apart. I'm truly heartbroken about it.

Which other Metal Gear games have you played, and did you play/enjoy portable ops or peace walker?

What the hell is it with my soldiers fighting in my base? Should I be worried about it and how do I deal with it? Can't I just throw them overboard as I don't really want to be messing with this type of thing?

Yeah, I don't know what the fuck they were thinking.

I prefer the linear 90s action movie structure of previous titles to this open world. I can see someone thinking it's a bad game if they're into MGS for the story (lol) and aren't really into the base management element with its F2P mechanics and timers and stuff.

But there's undeniably a strong core there with the stealth gameplay during missions and sideops. Ultimately, I don't think it's a bad game. If a game has such a strong core, I don't think it can be considered straight up bad, even if the structure and story around that core gameplay are not to your tastes. Basically, if a game really nailes one core aspect yet fails in others, it deserves a more differentiated critical analysis than "it's bad/it's good".

edit: alternatively, look at it this way: if you got 15 hours of fun out of it before you're done with it, it's already about as much as you got out of most of the other MGS titles, which were roughly around 15 hours total. :p

Can someone give me the low down of point of no returns? I know that
certain characters leave.
I'm just wondering about how far i should go. I'm in chapter 2.

Go into your staff management. Sort each list by skills. Get rid of your troublemakers.

There's no point of no return with the story, it simply puts you back into the ACC after the credits of the last story mission.

If you're talking in terms of characters leaving,
equip the butterfly emblem right now and Quiet won't ever leave.

They weren't thinking
See, that's the thing. It's even worse than that. Things like that are very clearly a conscious design decision. Someone decided on that 5 million GMP limit and other members of the team thought it was fine.

Just terrible.

I don't know what I find more disappointing after completing Mission 48:
It took me too many damn tries with my tank to defeat the female Skulls
or
the female Skulls turned out to be male soldiers after I extracted all of them

Such injustice

Fire any people with the troublemaker status (alternatively place diplomats in the same area, but its easier to manage if you just get rid of them all together).

There is also a cutscene of staff fighting, but that is triggered by having low morale/negative GMP.

Fun fact: apparently, if you have a two troublemakers in one unit, nothing will ever happen - the two troublemakers cancel each other out.

It's a complete waste of time. Not to mention it's grossly underpowered. Check this screenshot I made:

Hey man, war's an uncertain business. No such thing as a low risk/high reward mission.

Thanks, I've seen the story scene with the fighting. Didn't realise I was able to fire people, will do that tomorrow when I log in.

I return to the base after every mission so I'm not away for that long, should I be visiting each section of the base and slapping people around or is just doing that in the central section help in all sections?

Is there any point in scanning troops when they're back at base? From what I can tell it all happens automatically when they're extracted from the field.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Visiting the base after every mission is a little excessive.

Yes, it's a conscious design choice, still doesn't mean they were thinking when they made it lol

I'm doing side ops listening to
Code Talker's
tapes, and holy shit is this the most asinine, moronic shit I have ever heard. What insane mind comes up with this stuff?

Still thoroughly enjoying the game, but the story sucks big time.

Mission
38
freaking sucks. I'm thinking of
bringing Quiet just to alleviate most of the guard threat.

EDIT: lmao
did that, found the thing and screwed up by getting into a combat alert. Hated the mission enough to just bail out, still got S rank.

shut her up?

Today I learned that there are two ways to throw a grenade, a shorter range (~30m) one and one that lobs them much farther (over 50m). Sleep grenades were already OP, with that longer range they're just cray cray.

i thought the subject matter of the
code talker
stuff was interesting. it's just that, rather than being explained via well-written conversation, it's instead reduced to
code talker
reading a lengthy cross between a textbook & a wikipedia entry :) ...

the whole tape thing was absolutely done to death in this game...
