E3 2005: Nintendo Benches Samus
The company explains why it didn't show more Revolution Metroid Prime 3 footage at its conference.
by Matt Casamassina

May 19, 2005 - According to inside sources, Nintendo could have shown much more footage of the recently-announced Metroid Prime 3 for Revolution at its pre-E3 2005 conference. Instead, the Big N opted to preview only a few snippets of in-game video from the work-in-progress. This was a particularly disappointing decision for some Nintendo fans because it was the only footage of Revolution software that the company revealed during the event.

Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs, explained the decision in an interview with IGNcube.

"Several of us felt pretty strongly that we didn't want people to misperceive that Metroid Prime 3 was our big [Revolution] launch title because that's not what it was intended to mean," Kaplan said. "And we really want to feel like we want to make sure we have a compilation with a lot of stuff that we're really happy with before we show it. It's like showing one finger of a hand doesn't make sense."

Retro Studios, which developed Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes for GameCube, is underway with Prime 3, which is slated for a Revolution launch sometime in 2006.

That was a weak excuse, but I am atleast happy that this game is due for a launch. Smash Bros and Metroid confirmed as launch titles already!

Even if it's a weak excuse, I hope it holds true. I don't like Nintendo banking on single games. Hopefully that changes with Revolution.

In that case, why did they bother to show that tiny clip from Metroid Prime 3 at all? They should have either committed to showing nothing, or showing a lot. Instead they had a random and weak clip from MP3.

I've wondered about this, too. That entire section of the show seemed incredibly awkward. Iwata was talking about games, he mentioned Metroid, the little trailer went up, and he stopped, like he expected applause or something, but no one applauded because they thought maybe it was a longer trailer. Then it just shows Samus for like a second, he stood there... And went on talking.

Nintendo pisses me off.

I would bet the PDZ thing was what caused them to wait. If the graphical prowess of the MP3 demo was underwhelming at this state, they sure didn't want to be compared to the PDZ fiasco. That said, I don't guess I would want to see some disappointing version of my favorite franchise either. Still, at least come out with the truth instead of tiptoeing around it constantly. I guess that's the Nintendo way though.

More FPS Metriod huh? Well I agree it odd they showned that video then and even more odd that theyadmit that is somehow related to Rev. Add that to interview and graphic whores have no reason to be shocked when Rev is finally unveiled.

revolution is awesome. can;t wait. now need to choose between ps3 and xbox 2. probably xbox 2. ps2 was a huge disappointment. same will be true for ps3? can't risk it

This is weird.

Nintendo is launching with two of their most celebrated franchises from the Game Cube? If Revolution should launch with an AKI wrestling game and Mario game, I'd call it the best launch since Dreamcast.

Is it possible that Square-Enix will release their FF: CC game at launch, as well?

Yeah, it's possible, but what's the point of speculating when the launch is over a year away?

Ok, not to be a nitpicker on the quote, but does it really confirm MP3 for launch? She says:

This could technically mean MP3 is not scheduled for launch day, but later on down the line, and they didn't want people to misperceive that it is.. IGN seems to back up the fact that it is slated for launch in the article, but I wonder if they have additional sources confirming. With Perrin Kaplan's carefully worded answers, who knows?

Wow I'm guessing if they did show more footage we'd have a new Wall Guy.

Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. Retro was working on that for 9 months?

They still have over a year. Why are you trolling every thread?

So that justifies your trolling? The game is a year -- if that -- removed from its unveiling. When has Metroid for the console ever looked "really bad" in its final look?

No your just pathetic.

Its only 9 months. You speak like that's a long time for working on a game or something. I mean its not like its 5 years. :lol

Actually I thought it was okay. I wasn't impressed but I could see it wasn't GC. Are there some decent pictures of it to show?

where can i see the footage of what was shone ??

IGN has it. Its pretty mediorce though. Samus looks like 1.5 Samus. They kept the candy coloured suit too. (which now looks a tad silly)

Meh. I have conmplete faith in retro making this an amazing looking title. We're talking about a system that is launching, in most probability, in more than a year.

here is a comparison

metroid prime 2

metroid prime 3

click these for a larger picture or you won't be able to see the full diference..

it's pretty sparce and it doesn't show a lot, but i think it looks about as good as PD0 (which obviously isn't the best looking next gen title we've seen)... still, retro's art style will probably make up for it. looks much better than mp2.. watching it on the conference with all the cuts just doesn't let you have a chance to examine it.

you're also comparing final vs production.

Especially look at these shots side by side, the biggest thing right away that you can see is the fact that all the texture detail in Samus' MP2 suit is all polygonal detail in the MP3 shot. Samus' suit is mostly round with flat colors, so there really isn't a whole lot different you can show, especially in such a short clip, that can give you the "next gen" feel. Metroid Prime looked like crap when it was first shown, this is a tiny teaser more than a year away from release, I don't have any doubt it will look fantastic.

That's a good point you made about the graphics, but I think it's pretty obvious there's no real difference between this game and the GC games. Still, I have extremely high expectations from Retro. They've doubly proven themselves to me this gen, my only fear is that Nintendo might rush them to pump out a MP game just to have one at launch. If this new title has the same polish, attention to detail, and overall atmosphere as the Prime games but running on new, more powerful hardware, I think it's safe to say we'll all be pleased.

To me, the new game footage doesn't really look as good as MP2, slightly fuzzier or something. Maybe it's just me. I'm still extremely anticipating it, though. Retro=my favorite developer. I just hope N gives them a chance after MP3 to spread their wings a little and see how much higher they can fly.

I blame the wall guy...

Nintendo probably think the PS3 presentation is too hard to top, so they just pulled back on Revolution.

yes this is the kind of game where the environments will make it beautifull, not so much the character models. Especailly if it is an FPS again (which i hope it is)

Cross you fingers that she looks better at the end than she did at the end of MP2

*hurls*

An FPS?

*weeps* :)
