Knee and ankle injuries to Jon Jones has led to UFCs biggest event of the year now being scheduled for early next year.
Jones suffered a torn meniscus and sprained ankle while doing wrestling training on 8/11, and pulled out of his 9/27 bout with Daniel Cormier for the UFC light heavyweight title. Due to a brawl between the two seven days earlier, and the release of an except of the footage when neither man, at the time, were aware they were being filmed, that had been previously described in last weeks Observer, interest in this was the biggest for any UFC fight in more than one year.
As things stand, the fight will now take place on 1/3, which leads to interesting bits of timing, since that date had been earmarked for Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano and possibly Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler. Clearly putting all three on the same show would be overkill, but Jones vs. Cormier and Rousey vs. Carano as a double main event should be one of the biggest PPV events in MMA history, and perhaps even one of the biggest events in PPV history.
UFC announced that the Demetrious Johnson vs. Chris Cariaso flyweight title match, originally set for 8/30 in Sacramento, would be moved to 9/27. They also announced that anyone who had already purchased tickets for Jones vs. Cormier could get a refund at the point of purchase through 8/22.
Johnson vs. Cariaso would be the weakest marquee PPV main event in modern company history. Cariaso as a challenger is weaker than Ali Bagautinov, who did a sub-125,000 buy PPV with Johnson in June. This does have the advantage of a stronger undercard, with Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier, the return of Cat Zingano vs. Amanda Nunes, the return after three years of Dominick Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki, and Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero. But while that is a good show as far as support for a Jones vs. Cormier fight, its not stuff that will move the needle that much, unless McGregor and to a lesser extent, Cruz, are able to garner enough interest to make people want to spend money.
For Jones vs. Cormier, a few dynamics change. The first is that Cormier was going into the fight with a knee injury and delaying it three months gives him more time to heal the knee. He wont be getting his knee scoped, and even before being called to fight Jones at the last minute, had opted against having the knee surgery that he at first was planning for after his 7/5 wrestling match, saying he hates surgeries. In addition, Cormier was taking the original fight on shorter than usual notice as a late replacement for Alexander Gustafsson, but now he can rest and rehab his knee for two months and then start a full camp in October with three months to prepare. The other edge is that his main training partner, Cain Velasquez, will be in his home stretch of training at the same time.
While Cormier was at first critical of Jones for pulling out, given the Cormier tore his meniscus less than two weeks before his fight with Dan Henderson, and didnt pull out, the reality is Jones is not going to fight unless hes close to 100 percent. Thats just how he is and theres nothing wrong with that. It also gives UFC time to at least consider a three week Prime Time build to get the footage already done on the air in front of eyeballs in the weeks leading to the fight, although to make that fully worth it would require FOX putting the build on general interest stations and not limit it to the low-rated core FS 1 audience. The injury also delays Gustafssons title fight with the winner until the probably the late spring or early summer. And if Cormier wins, it would probably be longer since Jones would likely get an immediate rematch.
UFC is now in the position of having six to eight different championships, essentially everything but heavyweight and featherweight, ready for title defenses in December and January, the way injury recovers and other timing is working. Bouts that are announced include the light heavyweight (Jones vs. Cormier on 1/3), middleweight (Chris Weidman vs. Vitor Belfort which is scheduled for 12/6), welterweight (Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler which Hendricks has said hed be ready in December or January), lightweight (Anthony Pettis vs. Gilbert Melendez which is expected for 12/6), bantamweight (the T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao winner on 8/30 should be ready to fight again during that period), flyweight (Demetrious Johnson or heavy underdog challenger Chris Cariaso should be ready by January), womens bantamweight (Ronda Rousey publicly said she wants to fight on 1/3, with either Gina Carano or the Cat Zingano vs. Amanda Nunes winner as the likely next opponent) and womens strawweight (the tournament final match takes place at some point in December on FS 1). Of course, injuries are likely to change at least a few of those timetables.
A double headliner of Jones vs. Cormier and Rousey vs. Carano would likely end up as among the biggest UFC PPVs in history, and could easily be the second biggest ever behind UFC 100. Not only is it a UFC 168 level marquee doubleheader, but it will merge two completely different audiences, much like the December show last year did. If Carano can get a deal that calls for a percentage, all of a sudden, that fight looks to have only increased her potential income if she can get it on that day. Its overkill to put Hendricks vs. Lawler there, but if its not put there, that would likely move it to the Super Bowl show which already has Anderson Silva vs. Nate Diaz, so if you have that double headliner, thats a big one as well.
But it also puts UFC in a position where they arent going to be doing even close to 250,000 buys on PPV until November, at which point they may, barring injuries, be in line to do a good show (Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum on 11/15 in the debut in Mexico City) and three huge to monstrous shows in a row after that.
Regarding Carano, its well known that Bellator and Scott Coker are making a major play for her, so shes in a great position.
There was an attempt this past week to put together a Carano vs. Marloes Coenen fight in Bellator. Coenen is likely to be announced as signing with Bellator imminently. Based on what we can tell, Coenen got a big offer from Bellator. Her contract with Invicta had expired and she was offered far more then she had been making. Coenen had not been in talks with UFC because she no longer wanted to cut to 135 pounds.
Invicta promoter Shannon Knapp noted that she had not given her a new contract offer, noting Invicta is really about up-and-coming fighters and she doesnt see how she could book Coenen, 33, with 27 pro fights, against fighters with maybe four or five fights.
Carano got a big money offer as well, but theres no indication what decision she is going to make.
There are advantages and disadvantages of Bellator vs. UFC from her standpoint. Visibility, being part of a major PPV, even if she loses, shell increase her marketability and her name value will be much bigger from the promotion of the fight than a series of wins on Bellator TV. Bellator would allow her to fight at 145, while UFC wants her fighting at 135, because thats where the money match is. Bellator could, to a degree, pick opponents for her, given they are doing that with Bobby Lashley, and Carano is a far bigger star than Lashley. With UFC, it makes no sense not to put her with Rousey first, because thats the money fight, and booking any other fight for her risks the real money that would be made in bringing her back.
Spike also could put together a deal involving shoulder programming, like they did with Randy Couture and Rampage Jackson. But I dont see her as someone who could carry a television series. It will be interesting to see if Viacom really is going to try and outspend UFC for her.
This was the week for MMA fighters and accusations of heinous crimes.
War Machine, the former Jon Koppenhaver, 32, was accused of a horrific beating of one-time girlfriend, porn star Christy Mack, on 8/8.
Mack, 23, claimed that Machine, his legal name, attacked her at 2 a.m., leaving her with numerous serious injuries.
Even before her statement, but when the story broke later that day about him being wanted by the Las Vegas police after inflicting what police called severe, but not life threatening injuries, to a man and a woman at their home, Bellator sent out a release stating he was fired.
We have a zero tolerance policy here at Bellator when it relates to any form of domestic violence, said Bellator President Scott Coker. And after learning of this latest incident involving Jon Koppenhaver, War Machine, Bellator is releasing him from his promotional contract with the organization.
Mack, who claimed Machine broke up with her in May and had moved from her home in Las Vegas to San Diego, showed up at the house late that night and without a single word spoken, started beating up on the other person in the house, Corey Thomas.
Machine, on Twitter, wrote about the incident saying, Im not a bad guy. I went to surprise my girlfriend, help her set up her show and to give her an engagement ring and ended up fighting for my life and I only wish that man hadnt been there and that Christy and I would be happily engaged. I dont know why Im so cursed. One day truth will come out.
However, part of her story does fall apart regarding the breakup, because of both parties constant use of Twitter. Both had posted photos of them together, including one of them having sex, from just two weeks ago, so her May break-up story has holes in it already.
Machine is being charged by Las Vegas police with one count of battery resulting in substantial bodily harm, one count of battery by strangulation, two counts of battery with substantial bodily harm, one count of open and gross lewdness, one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of coercion and threat with force.
She claimed that he beat up her friend and ordered him to leave, made her undress and shower in front of him, and then started punching her in the face. She said the beating resulted in 18 broken bones around her eyes, her nose being broken in two places, teeth knocked out, other teeth broken, and that she cant chew or see out of her left eye and her speech is slurred from swelling and lack of teeth. She said she also received a fractured rip and a ruptured live from a kick and her leg was so badly injured that she cant walk. She said she also has lesions from a knife that Machine pushed into her hand, ear and head, and sawed off some of her hair with.
I believed I was going to die, she said in a statement. He has beaten me many times before, but never this badly. He took my phone and canceled all of my plans for the following week to make sure no one would worry about my whereabouts. He told me he was going to rape me, but was disappointed in himself when he could not get hard. After another hit or two, he left me on the floor, bleeding and shaking, holding my side from the pain of my rib.
She said he left and she thought he was looking for a sharper knife and she ran out the back door, hopped the fence to the golf course behind her house and ran to a neighbors house. She said she was naked and was running through the neighborhood, knocking on doors and finally one neighbor answered, who brought her to the hospital.
War Machine continued to tweet while being on the run from police. There was a $10,000 reward by Las Vegas police for information leading to his arrest. Publicly, Duane Chapman, better known as Dog the Bounty Hunter, said that he would find Machine and bring him to justice if Machine doesnt turn himself in.
As Jon War Machine Koppenhaver, he was on the sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter, where he had an incredible first match, winning a bloodbath over Jared Rollins in 2007. He was fired by UFC for comments he made about Evan Tanner after his death which got a lot of people furious, basically saying that he thought Tanner committed suicide because he knew his career was over and that he had no money for all his time in UFC. Even after Tanners death was ruled to not be a suicide, he continued to talk like that. He also had an issue with matchmaker Joe Silva, and refused fights so was let go.
Bjorn Rebney at Bellator immediately signed him, but he was then fired after writing on Myspace that he hoped somebody would kill Barack Obama and every president to come. After that, in a fight scheduled for April 17, 2010 for Wild Bills Fight Night in Duluth, GA, the day before, he left a message on Twitter saying he was going to no-show the event, and did.
Still, Bellator brought him back at the end of 2011. But before he could start, he was sentenced to one year in jail on an assault charge.
Among his arrests have included a 2007 case in Las Vegas where he was found guilty of punching a man and choking him unconscious in a parking lot fight, and given three years probation and 30 days community service. In 2008, he had a second assault charge based on fighting people who he said were catcalling him. In February, 2009, he was arrest for a fight the gay night club Krave where he was working as a topless bottle server. In November, 2009, he punched out a number of people at a birthday party for a porn star. In 2010, he was arrested in San Diego after pushing a bar owner and destroying several glasses. Later that year, he was again arrested in San Diego after an incident at the Pacific Beach bar. Koppenhaver, who starred in 12 porn movies, took War Machine as his legal name because he had gotten a legal letter from TNA regarding using War Machine, as his nickname, claiming Terry Gerin (Rhino) owned that name. He then had his name legally changed to War Machine, since you cant be stopped from using and marketing your real name.

At the end of 2010, Joshua Grispi was a featherweight fighter on a nine fight winning streak, eight by finish, who, when the WEC merged into the UFC, was scheduled to get the first title shot at Jose Aldo on January 1, 2011.
But when Aldo was injured, and his debut was pushed back a few months to the Rogers Stadium show in Toronto, Grispi took a fight with Dustin Poirier. The end result was him not able to take Poirier down, nor compete with him standing. He suffered a one-sided drubbing and he never won another professional fight. With his fourth loss in a row to Andy Ogle on February 16, 2013, in London, he was cut from the organization.
Now hes facing some of the worst domestic abuse charges that police in the Boston suburb of Middlesboro, MA, can remember, including training his pit bull to chew up his wife on command.
Grispi was arrested twice, on 8/1 and 8/4, the second time after wife Kaitlyn, 25, had been chewed up by the family dog, Buddy, leaving her with bruises and scratches all over her body. She also had a broken wrist and a concussion.
Police had arrested Josh Grispi first on Friday, after Kaitlyn Grispi had texted a photo of her, with bruises all over her face and nose, and bleeding lips, to her mother. Her mother went to the police. The police went to her home, and convinced her to take out a restraining order against her husband, and to leave the children, ages one and three, with their grandmother.
She claimed he had several times choked the dog unconscious, and had trained the dog to, on command, attack.
Police found, among other things, eight guns, most unsecured and a few in a box next to their one-year-old daughters playpen. Another unsecured gun was found right next to the three-year-old. They also found numerous marijuana plants and other drugs.
Josh Grispi, 25, was charged with multiple counts of improperly storing firearms near minors, assault and battery against his spouse, and was taken into custody.
He was released on $2,000 bond three days later. His wife canceled the restraining order. The two got into an argument, allegedly when Josh couldnt find a pile of wood. She ran out of the house and hid under a bush. Josh found her, and he allegedly began punching her in the head. He dragged her into the house and began punching and kicking her as he was screaming, You want me to fucking kill you?
She tried to escape when he had the dog attack her. She was chewed up but managed to escape and get to a neighbors house, where police were called again. They found more ammunition, 20 marijuana plants 15 grams of cocaine and two pot-belly pigs that he they had as pets in the basement.
Police also found text messages he had sent to his wife:
UR fucking dead and if U even try to bring my kids into it, the worse it will b for u and if u try and make a seen (sic), Ill choke you unconscious and smash ur throat and if u get worse n run around after Im going to let Buddy have at u and Ill walk out of the room.
Dont cure you whore, thats all u think about ur a fucking scum bag piece of shit who Im going enjoy choking to death.
U better not b bluffing about cops cuz I dont joke ur dead when I see u...Literally, I dont care Im gong t beat u n throw u to Buddy. Ur dead.
His wife claimed Grispi had been abusive toward her the past two years, which coincides with his career faltering. She said she never came forward, claiming he had threatened to kill her and her family. She claimed she had never previously told her parents, for fear Josh would kill them.
Josh Grispi was taken in and being held without bail.
