The Portuguese base in the Azores, a.ka. Base das Lajes, was very important during WW2 and the Cold War, due to it's position in the Atlantic.
But in recent times, it lost most of it's significance and because of that, the USA was downscaling it's presence and was about to close it down.
The Azores is one of Portugal's poorest region, because it's in the middle of the Atlantic, isolated from everything.
So the closure of the Base das Lajes, had a significant impact in the local economy.

Augustine by the way, today one the best known figures in Christendom, was converted when Anselm explained to him not to take the Bible literally. The problem with Iraq was the de-Baathification. It forces a lot of commanders to escape and later they founded ISIS. With Iran, Israel and USA are essentially destroying only IRGC.

I do expect some level of fragmentation but it won't be the same situation as Iraq.

Not really. If people were willing to die for him, they would not have escaped or left for other countries. Some nutjobs exist everywhere, but by and large those people, who ran away to western states and others do not want to die either. And the arab states will suppress them in ME due to shias being a minority really. Plus not every shia is the same. For example iraqi shia != iranian shia. And they don't like each other. Even within Iran, there are shias that do not like IRGC and so on. The region is a mess.

Destroying the command and control structure and means of power projection of the IRGC is different than destroying and disarming the IRGC.
