Most Overrated Developer??

I would have to go with Bungie.. I mean lets look what they've done this generation. They made an average 3rd person shooter in Oni, and then they made a great FPS. Granted, while Halo is a great game, it still failed to innovate in anyway, it was just as though Bungietook all the of great aspects of other great FPS titles and combined them in one refined package. After that, they rehashed the fuck out of that great FPS and thus Halo 2 was born...

They offered little to no innovation this generation, nor have they done anything revolutionary unless you count the Halo 2 launch hype which was pretty much unprecedented. I want to see them show us some true innovation branch out from the FPS genre,(Oni was a PC port so...) Show us that you can make a great Console game that isn't an FPS(they did it on PC/Mac). IMO they need to do both or one of those things before anyone can begin to put them on the pedestal they get put on.

Nintnedo, Sony, and Microsoft and Square. There, ive listed 96% of GA's obvious answers.

Should I start posting every important dev to cover all the basis to piss everyone off equally? You know, might as well get it out a head of time.

until you can develop an actual game and be able to sell it to millions of gamers.....iiii really don't think any of us are in a position to criticize

You're wrong, I could take a H:CE expansion pack instead of H2 SP campaign any day.
they changed too much gameplay elements (sadly for the worst :/ )to be considered a rehash.

And yes H:CE was indeed a After and Before point in the FPS genre, you just need to play it to recognize that.

well, though i may not be in a position to criticize....

ubisoft... didn't like POP, didn't like splinter cell and haven't liked any of the hyped ubi-soft games i've tried this gen. Good looking games with very good gameplay, but there is always some glaring flaw. it's either too short, or too easy, or too linear or there is something wrong with the structure.

also, they rush their sequels like EA.

Konami - Aside from the rare treat, I find most of their stuff (particularly the franchises that compose most of their library) to be tedious to play graphic demos.

They'd earn brown points by releasing Remote Control Dandy SF here in the US though.

Namco - Has and always will be a cut rate Sega wanna-be.

Tecmo - Come on you fuckers, there's only room for one wanna-be Sega in the market. Go out of business already!

Efwis is the most overrated developer this gen. I mean, what have they done to really innovate? They've made the same thing over and over with little to no variation. It's like taking the work of others, smashing it into another form and vomiting it out onto the populace all over again.

I vote for a ban on all Efwis products.

Most of them. I'm not being facetious, either. I think the tendency to worship a development house tends to miss the essense of a good game. Aside from the art and polish, most good games seem to be a heppy accident.

I'll get specific:

Rockstar. They have one winning formular, and that's it. It happens to be a formula I really like, but nothing else from them interests me.

Nintendo. They know polish and controls, but seem to have missed out on the enjoyment vector in recent years. No surprise their breakout gamers' games (Metroid) come from elsewhere.

Polyphony: See Rockstar above, but with the added note that their formula has gotten prett stale.

Capcom: I never got into them, seriously. They make the occasional good game, but on the whole I can count on sipping their games.

Forget the developer worship-- follow specific titles and play the demos. Good developers become bad developers almost at random, and quite suddenly-- and the fans stick around justifying their brand loyalty.

Rockstar - I have yet to enjoy one of their games for more than a couple hours. Everything I've played from them feels clunky and broken.

Ignatz sucks. Polyphony??? Come the fuck on.

And I'd say Crapbomb. They make a decent game, then milk it to the grave. PEACE.

Millions? Damnit, I'm going to have to wait a while :(

Team Ninja.

Other than Ninja Gaiden, all of their games are lame. And their "artistic and graphical talent" is showing it's peak with Dead or Alive 4:Ultimate with more Polygons.

I thought Mario Sunshine, Pikmin and Luigis Mansion were extremley overrated (SMS especially). So Nintendo.

Last gen i thought they were on fire, this gen.... meh

Impossible to answer, because too many publishers are comprised of several development teams, which may or may not be the same team from game to game.

So "Konami" isn't a valid answer. And maybe even "Bungie" or "Rare" or "Retro" isn't, because they've all had some notable personnel changes between games.

So it's better to stick to the games.

So are you guys talking about Publisher or Developer? :P

I think Retro is the most over-rated. Had a team like Bungie did Metroid Prime...it would have kicked ass. Mainly because they wouldn't have screwed up the controls to be toddler friendly.

Treasure

They've made some amazing games that I do love very much. But they've also been involved in a handful of really average games. I'm willing to give anything they make a shot, but everytime a new Treasure game comes out I swear a handful of people will defend it to the death just because it is Treasure.

yeah, let's just forget the 10 years of Bungie before Halo, and all those GOTY awards for Myth...

I chose Polyphony to make a point. My point is that any lauded developer is overrated. I can't think of one that deserves the kind of praise developers get.

In Rockstar's defense, they're not completely a one-trick pony. They created Lemmings back in the day, and that was pretty innovative and interesting (I'd like a DS sequel). There might have been something else, I can't remember. But surely that was the last of their creativity we will ever see again.

On the other hand, Oni is pretty much the only bad game they've ever made, and it wasn't that bad. That's a pretty low bar for "most overrated developer."

And Bungie proper wasnt even involved in that game. They were busy with creating Halo at that time.

so no one should criticize anyone elses music, art, movie, tv shows, etc... unless you are in the business and have made millions?

The thread is not about a bad developer, just overrated.

Taking 3+ years each on a car game that hasn't changed in concept for 4 iterations, and with the all the unfair support that comes with being THE first party developer, I'd say they are overrated.

If they finfished each game in 18 months like most devs and with all the same tools and budget that most would be privy too (and manage to add things like car damage and online play), then maybe you can heap the praise, but as things are, they are most definitely, overrated.*

*do I win a prize for the most comma filled sentence or what? :lol

Fine....YOU AND IGNATZ suck. :P PEACE.

For me it's Ubisoft. I really haven't enjoyed any of their games this gen. I find them graphically excellent yet otherwise sterile and uninteresting.

I haven't however played Beyond Good and Evil yet, but I intend to give that one a go, seeing as many people seem to love it.

But I wouldn't call them overrated, a lot of people seem to enjoy their games.

Two that come to mind that deserve their praise IMO, just picking from Western devs:

* Sid Meier
* Looking Glass

QFT.

Oh Treasure, how I love thee. But for every GunStar Heroes or Gradius V, there comes a Dragon Drive or Stretch Panic.
