Movies You’ve Watched Lately |OT| - 2024

I will NEVER watch that movie again... It was so disturbing to me! Like Event Horizon!

Are you saying you never rewatch Event Horizon? Aw man, that movie’s great!

I don’t know if I would personally say their level of disturbing was equal for me.

Seriously, the fate of the baby (clearly meant to represent Jesus) in mother! is the most fucked up thing I’ve personally seen in a film at the theater. I know there’s even more fucked up scenes in certain films out there, but the ones I’ve seen that was the top. Like, the director’s other films I’ve seen, Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, certainly had fucked up moments but nothing near that IMHO.

I personally wouldn’t say Event Horizon had anything as messed up as that. Maybe if we had gotten the full cut of the film that included the full version of what was on the recording showing the Event Horizon’s crew’s fate, maybe, but while I do wish we could have access to the full version, especially for the director to have his vision fully out there, I do IMHO think the scene works best as we got it as I felt it showed just enough to be extremely unsettling and letting our imagination fill in the rest, and that showing even more of the tape may have reached the point of excess and taken away from the horror of the scene.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Watched Jackpot! last night with Akwafina and John Cena

The movie was goofy as hell - kind of like a comedy version of The Purge mixed with depressing modern California culture. However, it's kind of refreshing to see comedies that still get made today. We need more comedies like this one.

I watched Ready or Not last night on TubeTubi

Didn't know anything about it, but I really enjoyed it. It's a thriller with some comedy elements thrown in.
Is that the one with the bride being hunted by her in-laws on her wedding night? I liked that.

There was a similar one that came out around the same time - The Hunt. Also worth a watch.

Yeah, the family is rich from games and they make her draw a card to see what game to play. Ends up with Hide and Seek, just the deadly kind.

I'll check out The Hunt.

Mostly thinking of watching this movie today,
Only because I love musicals so much and I enjoyed it the first time,
So thinking it might be a good time to rewatch it.
Andrew Garfield is really good in it and it makes me wish Netflix did more films like this,
Don't know why there aren't more musicals like this.

Loves his juicy stink trail scent
Watched every Alien movie with my wife including the AvP movies. Also did all predator movies aside from the new Prey.

Both franchises have a ton of misses for me but Alien does have spectacular ones.

Loved:
Alien
Romulus
Covenent
Prometheus

Liked:
Aliens
Predator 1

Hated:
The rest of both franchises.

This was a great movie. Very human, and while not a comedy, it did make me laugh out loud several times.

My disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined. This felt like a movie that was made so people could keep their SAG card. It was like half of one episode of the TV series Humans, but with a $200 budget.

This was not bad. About as subtle a s brick in the face with rich white guys bad/ females good, but I enjoyed it non the less.

3/5.
I just finished watching this one

3/5 seems about right, it was better than I initially thought it would be.

A bit predictable at certain points but overall enjoyable.

Kind of goes with Barbie, I thought. You have the women in Barbieland who forgot everything until they were given a feminist lecture, and the women on the paradise island who forgot everything until they were bitten by a snake. Obvious biblical connotation to the latter one.

Late Night with the Devil

October 31, 1977. Johnny Carson rival Jack Delroy hosts a syndicated late night talk show ‘Night Owls’ that has long been a trusted companion to insomniacs around the country. A year after the tragic death of Jack’s wife, ratings have plummeted. Desperate to turn his fortunes around, Jack plans a Halloween special like no other, unaware that he is about to unleash evil into the living rooms of America.

I love this one. Great acting across the board with a fun concept and well-made in most aspects.

Sort of found footage, sort of a documentary, the presentation was great. This film is proof you don't need trillions to make a good movie.

Megan Fox should make documentaries like Werner Herzog. It'd either be good or bad. At least it would cement herself in cinematic history in some shape or form. Like Borat.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Super funny and I could tell Danny Elfman’s score from the first few seconds.

Just saw The Critic. About a popular newspaper theatre critic in 1930s Britain, who’s outed as a homosexual and uses his influence to persuade an actress to help restore his position.

Seriously brilliant cast, with Ian McKellan, Gemma Arterton and Mark Strong. This would make a fantastic stage play, but it’s a great film and quite dark, despite an ending that seems tacked on to provide a sense of justice.

kurisu_1974

is on perm warning for being a low level troll
I just saw two movies today which are The Last Dragon and Big Trouble in Little China

Great post! Looks like you either loved or hated them.

Some picks of what I watched the last couple of weeks:

North Hollywood (2021)

R.152e0a5b37496a027c08a9e18d4ea23d

Cool little indie coming of age movie which I am kind of a sucker for. Not groundbreaking but I enjoyed the cast and the skating and the atmosphere. Not as good as the kinda similar Mid90s movie from Jonah Hill from a while back tho.

The Coffee Table (2022)

2697.jpg

Absolutely bonkers Spanish thriller or maybe even horror depending on where you draw that line. Hard to say much without spoiling but the events involve a new-born baby and a glass coffee table.

Throw Down (2004)

OIP.Cl0uc7izaUHcgbMjgEy5gQHaE8

Johnnie To's tribute to Kurosawa is an arty HK movie about blind judo experts. I appreciated the style, but the plot made no sense and while I like other To stuff like P.T.U. this one didn't really work for me.

The Promised Land (2023)

image-w1280.jpg

Mads Mikkelsen brings the heath in this Danish western. Interesting story and great acting, cool cinematography.

Blink Twice (2024)

22blink-twice-review-glbq-videoSixteenByNine3000.jpg

Zoë Kravitz' directional debut is a gaping plothole of cringe. Too bad because there were some good things here conceptually.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

I heard some positive chatter about it when it originally released, but never bothered to go see it before now. I was pleasantly surprised, as this was quite fun fantasy-action-adventure film. Chris Pine has done some impressive roles before, and he still has it in him. Other cast is also likeable, outside of Justice Smith. I just don't really like his face TBH. Visuals were nice, and story progressed on in a great pace. Of course, it was made for early teens in mind, so it has some cheesy moments in it. It probably has quite a lot of references to the original game, but as I haven't ever played it. all of it was missed on me. But other than those nitpicks, I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Count of Monte Cristo

A bit late to the party but I finally saw it. I love the book that I read recently. It's probably my "best ever" book I've read.
I'd say the movie does a decent job of adapting it. Of course there is a lot of cutting and change from the original story but I get it.

My major complaint is the final fight which break a bit the perfect image the Count has in the book (and in the movie till this point).
What makes the Count terrifying is how is perfect and how his plans works perfectly.

And there was some of "gut punch" moment in the book that were well transcribe in the movie.

Still read the book if you haven't , it's like 10000 better but the movie does a good job.
I enjoyed the soundtrack. And the actor who plays Edmond does a good job.

I would say it's French only. It's a french movie. It's still in some cinemas in France (released in June), don't know about other countries.
Don't know if it's available on streaming platforms.

I have been looking forward to it. I don't mind subs, I watched the French version of the three musketeers. Eva Green was in there. But they left you hanging after the second.

Was it good ? I saw it's available on streaming and was hesitating to watch it.

Monte Cristo is not without problems. I am a easy to content so for me it was ok.
Vengeance resolution happens a bit too suddenly and almost at the same time so it felt a bit rushed but 2 out of the 3 gave me a satisfaction feeling.
And they put some details from the book, that are never used after (while they have their importance in the book).

But I recommend it. It covers well the main story. Of course they had to cut all the subplans of the Count because it can't fit into a single movie.

I thought it was pretty fun. I enjoyed the cast and the story. But I think they set up for a third movie.
Indeed I checked and a third film (it was announced this june and only for 2027) will adapt the sequel to the book (I didn't even know it as a sequel) : "Vingt ans après" (Twenty years after).

I am gonna check these movies. Thanks

A Fish Called Wanda.

This is a very well crafted film that I wish I enjoyed more. There were about three scenes that genuinely made me laugh out loud and they all were scenes with Kevin Cline popping up in a window; that bit just genuinely got me. The bits with Michael Palin consistently killing dogs when he's an animal lover were very British sketch comedy, it was like shoving Monty Python bits randomly into a feature film, (makes sense as it was written and directed by John Cleese), which I suppose worked but I never felt they were terribly relevant, and by the third one I was bored of the bit. Jamie Lee Curtis is holy Christ sexy in the film, but incredibly unlikeable, and John Cleese turns into an unwitting protagonist by the end of the film.

It's a movie that I don't think could be made today, for better or worse, as I think Kevin Cline and John Cleese were absolutely essential for the funnier bits in the movie, and without them it's a fairly weak film.... don't regret watching it though.

It is overrated due to the cast involved. The plot and pacing are weak. My personal favorite performance by John Cleese is in Clockwise (1986).

Loved it. The lead actor nailed it.

I'll keep this one in mind.

I watched Dream Scenario couple weeks ago. Liked it

For those who love shorts, there's a channel called Omeleto that have pretty nice ones.

Haven't watched everything but those I watched I really enjoyed.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I finally watched Begotten.

......

I have no words. It's rare that I'm speechless but, I have no idea how to describe that film. Just watch it if you're curious about what is probably the strangest and most esoteric horror film of all time. It defies description.

Once Upon A Time In Mexico

A couple weeks ago for some reason I thought "Man, I haven't seen El Mariachi and Desperado since they came out on DVD." This led me to discover that for over 20 years there was a THIRD movie. I'm sure I heard of OUATIM before, I just knew nothing about it. Didn't know who was in it, didn't know who made it, didn't know it made El Mariachi a damn trilogy. So, I re-watched El Mariachi, I re-watched Desperado, and I'm in the middle of OUATIM. It's definitely even more over the top than Desperado, bordering on 'too silly' at times... but I can't say I'm not enjoying it. I literally did a spit take at the bull fight scene.

My daughter and I have watched Leprechaun 4, 5, and 6 over the past few days. These movies are grade A awful.

But funny as hell.
