Movies You've Seen Recently |OT| Jan 2014

There was also another film I watched recently, The Savages. Not to be confused with the Oliver Stone movie Savages from 2012.

This is a drama about two siblings, Wendy and Jon Savage in a bit of a mid-life crisis. In-between jobs, one's having an affair, other can't sell his book, and just an increasing sense that everything they done so far in life amounts to a big ball of nothing. Wait, did I mention the part about their long-estranged father Lenny on the verge of dementia and slowing dying a painful death? Because that was kinda important, I'd say that's really the central conflict here.

Anyway, there's not much of a plot, its mostly watching these three characters dealing with the shit life has thrown their way. Lucky for us, Wendy and Jon are played by two of my favorite working actors today, Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Laura is so nice, who does a lot of her acting with those beautiful blue eyes and that smile that looks like she's always about to cry, works great here, and says a lot with a little, through her body language or a small facial expression. Hoffman is almost as good, in a rare turn where he doesn't seem to have that arrogant smug demeanor about him and is actually pretty emotionally vulnerable.

Jenkins(the director) doesn't do anything fancy with the camera, the script isn't witty or clever or what have you(there are a few laughs, its kinda a dark comedy). Its just great actors showing such a fully-lived experience, you can't help but feel incredibly sympathetic with their plight.

edit: 4/10

i've haven't seen any of the films, i've seen a few films by bellocchio and they are fine, though the two mentioned above seem interesting.

it looks like the spectacle is going to be showing ronnie cramer stuff soon - highway az is really fun doc about this female wrestler who wrestles dudes in the worst motel rooms.

Sweetness. I will check that out then.

I just watched the Selfish Giant and it just knocked me on my ass. Jesus christ.

American Hustle: Solid performances and a good script, but it never coalesced into anything more for me. Nothing downright bad, but there wasn't a single scene I thought was standout or superb. Also I loved seeing Amy Adams sideboob, but come on, that's all her character was. I thought it was pretty sexist tbh. 6-7/10

Silver Linings Playbook: Was impressed by Bradley Cooper, didn't know he had the chops for something like this. Enjoyable rom-com drama, kind of heavy handed in its Hollywood love trumps all message, but whatever. I didn't think it was amazing by any means though. 7/10

After hearing so much David O'Russell hype over the past year, I don't see what the big deal is. He makes good popcorn flicks, but that's about it. Interested in Three Kings though.

Prisoners was pretty fun I think, in a dreadful way. I'd put neither it nor Incendies above like 3.5/5 yet they're both well-crafted thrillers. has me excited for Enemy (which had some interesting reactions out of fests).

Haha what borgnine said: this will be goddamn impressive if you somehow pull it off. You physically can't do that in a 2-day weekend, even in a 3-day you'd have to really ludovico yourself

That's like 60 hours, there are only 48 hours in a weekend.

Ended the year with about 350 movies, probably not going to do that many again this year. First of the new year:

Frances Ha: 8/10. Ha.
Well I finished the marathon. The only movie I didn't get to was Mulholland Drive because of purchasing issues on Amazon. I have a lot of different of thoughts about the movies I watched, so I might make a couple of posts on them later. Even though it sounds weird, I highly recommend a Stanley Kubrick marathon to other people if you're a large Kubrick fan. Watching his movies back to back shows you how his themes and techniques carry over and change from movie to movie. Like, two movies right next to each other will share a similar "feel," but two movies separated by a movie in between don't have the same "feel."

So many feels.

I got the Criterion Blu Ray edition recently so I re-watched it on the weekend. It seems to be better every time I watch it.

The 79th annual New York Film Critics Circle Awards turned awkward on Monday night when CityArts editor Armond White started to heckle director Steve McQueen.

McQueen had just accepted his prize for “12 Years a Slave,” presented by Harry Belafonte, when the interruption broke out.

As soon as McQueen took the stage, White started shouting from his table at the back of the room. “You’re an embarrassing doorman and garbage man,” White boomed. “F—you. Kiss my ass.”

McQueen either didn’t hear the comments or pretended not to. He thanked the critics group for honoring him with an award previously given to John Ford and Woody Allen, at which point White hissed “pulease.”

Kind of ashamed to say that I've never seen Reservoir Dogs or Boondock Saints until just recently. I've always heard great things about them but knew nothing about the plots or who starred in them. I was pleasantly surprised.

icm is finalizing some ui changes. looks nice - though hopefully they load faster than the site does today. also like how they act like the top comments aren't going to be youtube links to the films.

i assume you click all movies to show the unchecked ones only, seems like that should be more obvious as it's a main feature. anyway:

I don't think it was ever actually confirmed that it was Armond and not a guest. Similar to what happened last year at the NYCC dinner thingy, I believe.

An interesting response to the whole thing: http://nowtoronto.com/news/story.cfm?content=196100

Looks very snazzy. And the LB stuff was neat as well.

the one and only thing i don't like about it is the "i killed a man" voice over.

YES, I JUST SAW THAT.

I think she meant Blue is the Warmest Color, but in Femmeworth speak. Lucky, I have my Femmeworth translator on hand for these things.

Armond White was at one point, and may still be, the president (or equivalent) of the NYFCC. So they are well aware of his shtick, I am sure - although I'd take these reports with a grain of salt given what Melio posted.

dana stevens at least was at white's table and live tweeted that it was him and a guest though she didn't breakdown who said what, just that it ruined her night and that it was a lot more than just the doorman stuff.

Scorese wrote an open letter to his daughter about the future of film. Nothing revolutionary but name drops and what not.

It looks nice I guess but has lost its distinctiveness.

Lol it doesn't bother me. If you really want to break it down further it's interesting how all the soldiers are budding philosophers but it's so effective.

Got the sudden urge to rewatch all the harry potter movies

Man, the first one is rough. Radcliffe is fucking terrible, although I can't really blame him.

Also, Quidditch is the most impractical game ever and Hogwarts is a death trap that should be closed down

The first one is trying to blaze through too much plot in too short a time, and you got fourth-rate Spielberg wannabe hack Chris Columbus behind the lens. They get better as they go along, I feel. Better production designs, better pacing, better actors(Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon in particularly). I always found Radcliffe to be to the weakest of the three main kids, Grint and Watson really turned out to be some great choices.

Just noticed Wolf of Wall Street and Her are 'out'. Not sure if I can wait or not. Since screeners leak every single year, I'll never understand why studios delay Oscar contender films in late January/February outside the US.

Yeah always have to wait over here in The Netherlands. Wolf premieres tomorrow here. Dallas Buyers Club later this month. 12 Years a Slave in late february though :/

Watched To The Wonder. Ben Affleck looked like having a bad time and looked so wrong lol. Was I the only noticing that? Also, the movie didn't click on me... Should I rewatch Tree of Life and this after? It looked like a movie that definitely asks for a rewatch.

Do it. Malick films definitely grow with re-watches.

Jack Reacher: Beautifully directed especially the action scenes and car chase. While it was slow, I appreciated the pace. Too many movies have pacing issues with a majority trying to speed things up. Herzog was god awful, boy was it cringe worthy.

Either near the end of January or the beginning of February, after the Oscar nominations but before the Oscars on Mar.2

I was thinking that. Give about a month to vote.

I made last year's thread and was planing on doing it again this year (unless of course someone else wants to make it or makes it earlier).

That would be great, by then most likely contenders for my year list should be released over here. Though Her and Nebraska both release at the very end of february. 12 Years a Slave a week earlier luckily. American Hustle won't be here before the end of march though :O

Anyways, first film in theater this year for me was today.

Inside Llewyn Davis

I have been looking forward a lot to this one. I'm not too deep into old folk music but I do love Bob Dylan so I expected to like the music quite a bit. And I like the sixties in general, adding the fact that the Coen brothers are behind the lens this is simply a must see at forehand for me. And it turned out to be great. The soundtrack was superb (Hang me, Oh Hang me!), the acting was great (John Goodman!) and I liked the characters. And the jokes kept on coming, very funny film despite the dramatic tone. Oh and I loved those shots on the road with the camera outside the car.

8/10

A bit off topic, but this version of Hang Me, Oh Hang Me by Grizzly Bear singer Daniel Rossen is great too :D
