Gravity.

Manipulative, dumb-as-fuck, banal nonsense. 2/10. (2 points because I liked the scene where shit is flying in all directions)

I'd like to see more elaboration on why it's "manipulative" and "dumb-as-fuck".

Still haven't seen Prometheus, but I know it got a lot of shit so I guess that's not a positive comment either :P

To me Gravity was visually a masterpiece, saw in IMAX 3D and I guess if you missed out on that version the film will definetly be less impressing. The story was nothing special, but to me also not terribad (like Avatar was). I don't really mind Bullock and very much liked Clooney in it. One of the best cinema experiences I had in years.

I watched Primer last night I felt it was better than Upstream Color. I need to rewatch both though at some point. The final 30 minutes of Primer is breathtakingly good.

Do it. Malick films definitely grow with re-watches.

Thought so. Will do it, then. Tree of Life and then To The Wonder. It will be a long ride.

Btw, some other movies I watched in the last few days

Like Father, Like Son - It is the first Hirokazu Koreeda I watch and it seems like I will have to check out his other movies. I was already told that he is one of the best japanese directors. It was very beautiful, realistic and moving. Left me teary eyed.

A Touch of Sin - I felt the ambitiousness, but at times it was kind of annoying, repetitive and didn't leave much space to create a connection with what was happening and leave me engaged. Also, that CG snake.

The first one is trying to blaze through too much plot in too short a time, and you got fourth-rate Spielberg wannabe hack Chris Columbus behind the lens. They get better as they go along, I feel. Better production designs, better pacing, better actors(Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon in particularly). I always found Radcliffe to be to the weakest of the three main kids, Grint and Watson really turned out to be some great choices.

Azkaban was always my favourite the first and second time through, probably because it's the best book and has a competent director. Will probably be the same again.

And god damn, Chamber of Secrets is still my least favourite. The only purpose it serves is making me realise how bad the book was. 2 and a half hours of nothing with the dumbest plot and worst 'villain' in the series. The final encounter is just laughable.

Harry gets* a motherfuckin' sword. What's not to like about it? /sarc

* for a brief period of time.

Inglorious Basterds

Superb movie. Wish Fassbender was in it longer though.

Fassbender and Til need to do a german movie together.

The World's End

Unfortunately, I think this is my least favorite of the trilogy by a good margin. :( The biggest mistake of the film might be how it undermines the drama to keep the tone lighter. Also King's manipulative tendencies primed my critical thinking which compounded the problem.

Since 2009 I have stopped taking movies seriously.

I need to be shocked again like it was with American History X and American Beauty.

You know get my soul emotionally crushed.

American Beauty
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHxi-HSgNPc
then just watch a good movie I dunno, like there have been plenty of great movies since 2009 and literally thousands better than American history x. Watch a separation or Nebraska or tree of life or before midnight maybe; in cases like this I think it's far more likely that a person just hasn't been watching movies (especially when the two examples are common imdb canon)

I see it more as an attention seeking post, look at me guys in the movie thread. I stopped caring about movies since 2009.

Okay, now what? It's sounds the same as people who claim good music isn't around anymore, maybe they should look a little better.

No, I am stating a fact.

Why would I go again on a forum seeking attention because I have stopped watching movies since 2009?

Thought so.

What happened in 2009 and what's with movies having "American" in their title ? I admit that American History X was emotionally crushing. I almost wanted to stop watching movies altogether after it. Then I realized there were actual good films out there (or even mediocre ones for that matter).

It sounds like you need to widen your horizon or get over your sentiment. There's been plenty of good films over the years since 2009.

For emotionally soul crushing, please watch Dear Zachary.

(though it came out in 2008, so maybe film really did die in '09)

I have watched plenty of movies after 2009 but when I am saying "I have stopped watching movies since 2009" it means for me that I have stopped taking the movie world seriously after that.

Just not impressed at all with the post-2009 era that is all. Not saying that after that there is not single good movie because there are a couples that entered my great list including Untouchable.

Basically I am here to be informed on what other films can match the mood of the films aforementioned (including The Bad Lieutenant).

I've seen some ''blockbusters'' on BR last week, World War Z, Man of Steel, Pacific Rim...
All were ok at least.

But the best movie I saw that week?

The Iceman

Michael Shannon is AWESOME in that.

They just happen to be my two favorites movies that is all. Recently I have watched two crime-solving films; do not remember the name but both of them had the name of the main hero which was a detective.

Basically I am the type of person who can watch Eric Brockovitch to Oldboy. As long as there is some deep social/psychological/criminal factor into it I would probably watch it.

I recommend Bong Joon Ho's Memories of Murder and Mother. Great crime mysteries from Korea.

So, after yesterdays Inside Llewyn Davis I went for another cinema trip today. Also one I was much looking forward to.

The Wolf of Wall Street

So today it finally officially premiered over here after a dozen of preview showings over the last week nation wide. And boy was this a great film. It's a long sit, but to me it's was worth it for almost every minute. This movie about the rise and fall of Jordan Belfort can be easily compared to Scorsese gangster epics from back in the day like Goodfellas and Casino. We get to see Belforts totally out of control lifestyle trough his (and that of his companions) eyes. We see a totally immoral man making tons of money over the back of his 'clients'. I'm glad though they started the film with a still young and untouched Belfort, amazed by the things happening on Wall Street. You really see him change over the course of the film. The comedy approach to tell the story worked really good for me, it makes these three hours fly past you without you even noticing it. The fact that the film is packed with great actors makes it complete for me. DiCaprio was absolutely amazing, from giving speeches to drugs scenes, he did just great. And Matthew McConaughey had a great part in this movie as Jordan Belforts first mentor on Wall Street. Too bad he wasn't around that long.

And after I've seen this I don't really understand all the fuss about Scorsese glorifying Belforts life. Yes we see Belfort leading the life of his dreams for a big part of the movie but we also get to see the results of his way of living as we get closer to the end. I feel like it's an honest movie about a criminal who made the most out of his life while he could.

9/10

Now to decide what I want to see next wednesday. Philomena, Saving Mr. Banks and Walter Mitty are playing at the time I plan to go.

American Beauty is great and all, but the bag scene feels really out of place. Maybe wouldn't have stood out that much if the characters had shut up about it, but as it stands, it's easily the weakest element.

Surprised to see people falling for its faux-significance.

Wait, Bad Lieutenant is like American History X or American Beauty? Also, you meant Intouchables not Untouchable right?

The thing is, we don't (and likely you don't) know what you're going to respond to in order to be "emotionally crushed." Which is why you have to watch a lot of stuff and hope you get lucky. What is very emotional for some people can be laughable to others (like American Beauty).

But you really shouldn't limit yourself to post 2009 if that's what you're after.

I, personally, stopped watching movies after 1992.

I need my heart broken again for that baby being around all those squibs and pyrotechnics in Hard Boiled.

You know, something life destroying.

I've never been able to take seriously the people that suggest after year X, movies have been shit, especially when the sample size given by the person are both mediocre movies.

Many films aren't recognized as classics until much later once they've had enough time for critics to properly analyze. Blade Runner and Alien both were met with middling praise during release but are now staples of the genre.

Films that have come out since 2009 are the same way in that their staying power and depth won't become fully known until some more time has passed. So to say that all films past a certain date are bad is being a bit narrow minded. Amazing films are coming out just as often as before, you just have to dig a bit more to find them when they're new.

I was going trough my whatiwatch account to see what post 2009 films I gave a 9/10 or higher.

Toy Story 3, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, Black Swan, Inception, Captain Philips, Lincoln, Gravity, The Dark Knight Rises and The Wolf of Wall Street are the ones I still agree with. There are some silly ones in there, I even rated Dinner for Schmucks a 9/10. I remember seeing that at the Beers, Burgers, Blockbusters night pared with The Expendables :P

And I know the moves mentioned above would probably not score 9/10 or higher for most of you in this thread and I obviously haven't seen everything that could get such a rating from me. Have to say btw, I have seen A Seperation and Intouchables, both scored an 8,5 for me apparently. But they could easily be in that list above for me looking back at it now. Rating movies with numbers is a silly thing :P

Tangled

Definetly one of the better (or even best) animated movies to come from Disney in recent years. Going back to basics with a classic princess story really gets back the magic you expect from a Disney animation.

Tangled tells the tale of Rapunzel, the young princess kidnapped by an old woman because her hair could give eternal youth. Hidden away in the womans tower she's brought up as if she is the womans daughter. All the while never knowing she's actually the lost princess. Crossing her path after a bizarre turnout of events is Flynn Ryder, a wanted thief. This encounter would turn around Rapunzels life for good.

This Disney film has some of the most beautiful animations I've seen in some time, especially the forest looked amazing and so lively. Another important factor for Disneys animation movies is the music since they are basically musical films. And for Rapunzel there were some great songs, "I've Got a Dream" and "Mother Knows Best" come to mind. Adding some humour in the mix always does these movies good. And in this one a chameleon (Pascal) and a horse (Maximus) made sure that we had enough to laugh about trough out the film. And that even without any dialogue since the animals in this film don't speak. To conclude the package Tangled is just a hearth warming story that you don't want to miss out on. A true Disney classic I dare to say.

8/10

Who's falling for it? Seems like you're reaching out...

Now you see me

The ending blew my mind. Did not see that one coming. Good movie all around.
American Hustle

Bale is sooooo good in this movie. Great movie.

Rewatched Stoker.

Easily one of my favorite movies of 2013. It is so beautifully twisted and has so many fantastic scenes.

Thanks for the mini reviews guys! They got these queued! :D

Hanzel & Gretel - Witch Hunters

Shockingly, I came away from this pretty positive about it. After watching Solomone Kane it was refreshing to watch a B-fantasy film that actually had some fun with its own stupid premise. It was clear from the get-go that everyone involved knew full well what kind of movie they were making. I will say that I loved the film's production design and color palette, overall I think it's a great looking movie.

And hey, if you want to give me 90 minutes of Gemma Arterton running around in tight leather pants, I will not look a gift-horse in the mouth.

Spot on. I absolutely loved it too.

Jack Reacher: Beautifully directed especially the action scenes and car chase. While it was slow, I appreciated the pace. Too many movies have pacing issues with a majority trying to speed things up. Herzog was god awful, boy was it cringe worthy.

Agreed on the pacing. I hated a lot of action movies that had horrid pacing, but this was near top notch. :D

-----------------------------

I've been watching a ton of movies lately. I'll just say the ones that stood out in my mind.

The Pact - The going in this movie was great, but coming away with it afterwards, it would appear nothing worth writing home about. I liked it.

Clash of the Titans - Thankfully I've seen the original and loved it despite of its cheesiness. Count me a 80s kid I guess. :) But this remake however... severely suffered from pacing issues. A hour and 45 minutes... I feel that it should had at least tacked on 15 more just to make up for it but then again... its a remake based on b-fantasy so its silly to hope for much. Otherwise, its just a boss rush of sorts.

Texas Chainsaw
(2013) - I've seen the original and the remake. So I knew what to expect going in for b horror, but the last 20 minutes caught me by surprise and was rather pleasant change of scenario. :D
