I watched Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within yesterday. This was probably my first time watching this film since I saw it in theaters in 2001. I was disappointed back then because it was not a Final Fantasy title, but just your common dark scifi film. Now that I watched it again, I enjoyed it much better, although the CGI really shows it's age. It's good, not great film, and certainly a product of it's time. Will give the commentary track a run one of these days, maybe they have some interesting info regarding the making of the film.

Lightyear: I know there was a lot of controversy around why this underperformed, and now that I have seen it, I think I know why... It's boring, uninspired, predictable, and has zero humor that works. It has overly complex plot devices for a child to grasp or care about and it is so far removed from Toy Story, aside from one sentence at the start, I can see why it bombed. This was Disney+ material at best. It didn't feel "woke" at all, but Buzz's motivations to complete the mission make him come off as more sociopath than hero. Hated it. Plus, I love Chris Evans, but the performance felt like CE doing a Tim Allen impersonation the entire time.
The Toy: Scrolling through HBO Max and came upon this. Haven't seen it in decades, but my kids wanted to watch it, and they both really enjoyed it. I don't think this would ever be made nowadays, but it's funny and has its heart in the right place. Plus, Richard Pryor is so amazing. True legend.
The Rehearsal: Nathan Fielder's new show is freaking amazing. I know this is a thread on movies, but I have to mention it for more people to know it exists. The concept and execution are incredible and I can't believe it exists and got pulled off - at least the first episode.

Not really sure it deserves the trash tier rating on imdb. Found the flick solid but prolly won't ever see it again.
Also, dunno... With me being older Pam just isn't that hot anymore. But beauty standards did change ever since.
Funny story: As a kid I was pretty into Pam. Guess most people were back then actually. Anyway, when this movie came out I happened to be in Zagreb to visist my grandparents and I watched this flick with my grandma. Must have been 9 or 10 back then. Luckily noone gave a shit about age back then in Croatia.
Anyway, since movies there are subtitle only wiht no dub and I could neither understand English nor read Croatian fast my grandma ended up reading me the subs in the cinema. Remember how some people there got upset. LOL

This movie did absolutely nothing for me. I mean, yeah, it made me laugh a few times but the story was ridiculous and boring. I know it's not meant to be taken seriously but it's hard to accept Woody Harelson as this trained killer just letting Kevin Hart pretend to be him.
I got sleepy and my wife nearly fell asleep as well. We didn't even get half way through and I gave it a thumbs down.

Really good action scenes, I'm happy to see the Russo Brothers show they can still make great films outside of the MCU. Took my daughter to this last night per her request. I saw the trailer and thought I was in for some shit, but overall, I had a great time.
It reminded me a lot of the 90's when they would take any reasonably successful novel and make it into a mid-budget movie. It's got narration, it's got 1969 as a setting, it's a bit of a coming of age mixed with courtroom thriller, tear-jerker ending.
I know it's not a great movie, but it was very entertaining. The lead gives a great performance and I can't wait to see her next role. Perfect Sunday afternoon flick.

Thor was exceptionally good, particularly the villain who painted a dark feeling with capturing the kids, killing gods etc. there’s an abundance of content in such a short period of time for example the weapons for most people really fun. Unfortunately after end games Avengers if you look at marvel’s future it’s has-been super heroes getting their “moment” by 2050 every super hero will have a movie, that’s good but for the people who like the avengers story build up to Thanos sadly the movies are moving away from that.

I had seen the ads and Tweets and all about this, but I didn't realize it was a Russo Bros movie based on Greaney's Gray Man. I read On Target back in 2014 or so, it was OK, nothing special, but really few such spy thrillers are.
I didn't look up who the cinematographer was, but they have a sharp eye. A very visual movie. The action, just like the Captain America films, almost feels like a dance at times - it has rhythm. Remember the awesome fight at the start of Civil War, where it felt like a choreographed routine between the various Avengers? There's a few scenes like that in this.
Gosling actually does a terrific job adapting the Gray Man character. He's even called "glib" in the opening scene, and that would have been the exact word I would have used to describe the character. He's no Jason Bourne - he has character and depth beyond his super spy training, he has terrible flaws. Chris Evans does his best to come across as menacing but it's really hard to see him that way - he's just too charismatic to play a bad guy to me. Ana De Armas is yet again the female supporting character and hey, I can watch her all day. She is still as arresting as ever. I can't wait for that Ballerinajerk off fest I mean John Wick spin off.

Yea, don't know why I went this long without seeing this - even though I saw the second and third.
A simple turn off your brain action movie like the rest, but I have to say this was the weakest of the bunch. The pacing is kind of jarring - going from intrigue and drama to a guy kicking the shit of other dudes on a basketball court to a quiet and reflective scene between a guy and his tattoo artist. Stallone is a really good director too, capable of drama, earnest action, and goofy action, so it's odd that he let this edit fly. Still, it's not terrible. Made me laugh several times too with its dad jokes.

Was in an 80's and 90's comedy mood, tried two movies I've never seen before:
City Slickers - I don't get why this is considered a classic. I made it slightly halfway through before turning it off. I didn't laugh once. Just a boring movie and none of the humor lands.
My Blue Heaven - Cheesy in a good 1990 way. It had some funny moments. Not sure how I'd feel about this one if I was an Italian American. The stereotyped cliches and depiction of Italians is pretty wild. Steve Martin is basically a cartoon character at times he's so absurd.

watched Dune (1984). finished the book last night. already watched Dune (2021) which is what convinced me to read the book.
despite being dated with silly visual effects i quite enjoyed it. it did leave some things out from the book but not really an issue. the movie wasn't as bad as i expected it to be. now i'm just so excited for Dune Part 2 next year (hopefully)

Theres something about movies made in the 70s + 80s I find really relaxing, you kind of feel like you're there and its a real place, they kind of feel like they are more real then modern movies. The cameras and film they use migh jave somthing to do with it.

I think I know what you mean. It's like the heightened "realism" of Hollywood movies wasn't an established trend yet, and they aimed to capture how life actually was. How people actually acted.
Of course, my frame of reference for how life was in those times are the movies themselves so maybe I'm way off base.

Old movies like taxi driver and marathon man and plenty of others just seem to relax more, I feel most modern films dont have simple everyday situations like having dinner in a cafe or at libary as much as old films.
Modern movies have to moving all the time and more dramatic. There are exceptions, smaller films like nomadland, gran torino, the mule, and several others also have the ability to make boring everyday things seem interesting.

I rewatched it with my friend last weekend and was floored by how bored I was by it. I'm totally down with a slower paced detective Batman but knowing the plot and where it was going made me completely unenthused to finish it. My buddy fell asleep actually.
This and black widow were big disappointments for me.

Great performance from the actress, nice environment and cool kills from the predator (the highlight imo). But it is nothing more as opposed to Predator 1.
The movie is trying a bit too hard to make the lead a Lara Croft like character but it is not Netflix level of stupidity.

I've been doing a stupid little thing these last few weeks, where I follow the alphabet when deciding on a movie to watch. It really helps with the selection process, and it gave me the opportunity to finally fill in some gaps and cross off some films from the list of shame.

1. 3 Days to Kill (2014)
Pretty generic thriller from that hack McG who has only made shit movies? It had some entertaining parts, but it was all very far fetched and the villains were worse than cartoon characters, especially the Amber Heard character.
2. Allied (2016)
Remember when Robert Zemeckis made all those 80s classics? Yeah here he's doing super generic Hollywood war drama where everyone speaks English, sometimes with a funny accent tho!
3. The Black Phone (2021)
This was actually pretty entertaining, even if I didn't like some of the stylistic choices, but yes I was entertained by the mystery and it had some cool moments.

It's no Taxi Driver, but it's a vintage Paul Schrader movie and to be honest I have never been disappointed. Great atmosphere, great performances, one of the best films I watched during this run.
5. Draft Day (2014)
It's no Moneyball. Yeah it really isn't. Very mediocre and not very interesting, and from what I've been told, also very much removed from how baseball drafting occurs in real life.
6. The Exception (2016)
Pretty lame semi-historical movie about the last days of the German kaiser when he lived in The Netherlands in exile during WWII. It was kinda interesting, but it was also very close to a TV movie.
Stay tuned for more alphabetical cinephilia!

Finally got to see Prince of Darkness 1987. I love most of John Carpenter work but somehow I missed that one. Anyway good horror movie a must watch for Carpenter fans. It lacks a bit of polish and budget to make it great, still a 7-8/10.

This might be the greatest comic movie ever for actual fans of old comics, who witnessed the rise of the MCU amongst a public that 99% probably never read an issue of the Avengers. Ryan Reynolds is also the only actor to accurately capture his target character 100% in a comic adaptation IMO.
It is consistently on point when breaking the fourth wall. Like when Deadpool gives his "four or five moments" speech. Within the confines of the film he was giving audience, but he was actually lowkey breaking the fourth wall in a soliloquy to the fans pointing out that he's the guy that does the "ugly stuff that no one else will do", right before he blows the brains out of several pedophiles.

One of the better video game adaptations. The movie draws inspiration from all games in the series. Ridiculously over the top action sequences, just like the games. The casting was a bit uneven. Mark Wahlberg was the best. He didn't look like Sully, but he nailed the snappy and humorous banter with Drake. Tom Holland was okay. He will probably grow into the character by the second movie. Chloe was meh, Banderas was a wasted opportunity for a good villain, but the black chick sold her part as the main baddie so I guess it worked in the end. I hope it turns into a good blockbuster franchise. It has potential to be even better, given this was a good first try.

My buds and I used to say "....the radiologist with glasses" whenever someone asked "who is XXX?".
PoD really got under my skin back in the day. That end shot with her behind the mirror....sheesh. Plus those credits across the first 20 minutes.

I'm a fan of Studio Ghibli films, this is one of the last ones I've yet to watch despite having owned it on bluray for many years.
Directed by Hayao's son Goro Miyazaki. These films are typically aimed at teenagers to young adults, with some often very adult themes mixed in. This film focuses on the lives of two teenagers but feels like it's crafted specially for adults. It deals with recovery from devastating loss, grief, forbidden love - it's a far more serious film then I was expecting. It's also not adventurous as most other Ghibli films are. The animation, score, and voice acting are all predictably excellent given the source.

i think i only watched a couple trailers before going to see it. wasn't quite what i expected from watching them. i didn't enjoy it but i'll give it another shot when i can rent it. not paying to go see it in the cinema again.
