Another enjoyable episode, if only for the Rarity and AJ buddy cop thing(is that the right phrase?) going on. The only surprising thing besides AJ's duck face is the lack of a song.

Yes, sadly mules were set up as 'stubborn' since episode three.. ;_; which also started the pattern for Cranky, later down the line.
Such a shame.. but meh. cannot change minds of something (ponies have better marketing, after all!)

I think 'the dynamic' would be the right phrase after thinking bout it. They acted this episode in the same way they did in Look Before You sleep. Unless im wrong.
Loved the episode. I wouldn't rank Rarity as one of my very favourite characters, but her episodes are almost always excellent. Tabitha St Germain is such a fantastic performer, and her ability to layer a (bad) southern accent over Rarity's already over-the-top voice was terrific.
Additional bonus: Spike gets something to do for a change!
Additional complaint: Can we please, please stop making the ponies do scary pouty faces? Between Pinkie in Pinkie Apple Pie and Applejack in this one, I can never quite tell when the next assault might be coming.

*sigh* I shall try to explain...
I know mules.. I know donkeys. Neither are UGLY or deserved to be described the way they are. Stubborn is somewhat true, you know why? because a horse will run itself to death, where a donkey or mule knows its limits, no matter what you try to do. (with minor exceptions)
Even the weirdest horse breeds, I wouldn't call ugly or assume they are lower than another, merely different and with utility in other fields be it fieldwork, show ponies, etc. Then again... I know of a few people who would like to see more horse breeds in the show. Other than say, the Saddle Arabians who were briefly shown.
Yeah... I need a break. This shit is ridiculous, and obviously this month is affecting me more than I thought.

I thought this episode was okay. Like Forrester said, I think it dragged on a little too much. The highlight was definitely Country Rarity vs Classy Applejack. I like a lot of the other little gags like Trenderhoof mentioning how he highlights the underappreciated and then points to Derpy and Spike staring at the camera during Rarity's little ironic revelation to him.
I'm looking forward to the humanized fanart based on this episode. Should be interesting.

Since season 4 is slated to have 26 episodes and with only 6 keys plus the box, there's going to be some just for fun / meaningless filler episodes thrown in...
At first I was appalled and was going to put this on the never need to watch again like Bats. However I did find some parts to be funny and their little rehash of making fun of each others personalities was enjoyable.

I don't want to tell you how to watch, but thinking of non-key episodes as being filler sounds like a recipe for having no fun at all. Episodes like Simple Ways or Pinkie Apple Pie are what this show is; the arc-heavy stories are by far the exception rather than the rule.

Oh that's awesome, thank you! By the title alone "it ain't easy being Breezies" sounds like its likely to be a Fluttershy episode, considering what she was up to during Three's A Crowd.

Frankly, I don't lose sleep over what or who people will be attracted to.
Would rather have that bit of harmless deviancy in the world than the prolific intolerance, hate and ignorance that society deems as acceptable behavior.
I own 3 mules, so yeah, all the mule/donkey stuff sticks out like a red flag to me in any episode, lol.

I'm going to stop bringing this up unless something changes and this pattern either stops or gets much worse, but Simple Ways is another episode that's mostly good on its own but which is wildly out of place. This is a season 1 episode; it could replace Look Before You Sleep. Rarity and AJ have already gained respect for their differences. Rarity in particular has already had a crush on a high-status pony and learned that friendship is more important. Her shrine to this random-ass travel writer is bizarre and is the sort of thing you'd think would have come up when she was dreaming of hooking up with a royal. And her total abdication of responsibility with respect to the festival thing or whatever it was is completely out of established character, especially after Sweet and Elite.

I was thinking that, but I thought it was done much better in this episode than in season 1, and I liked that Rarity and Applejack already beat their little quirks and one isn't horribly afraid of mud anymore, while the other isn't also afraid of putting fancy dresses to get their points across. It shows that they have learn, at least a little.
It also does something that Look Before you Sleep never does. Make it entertaining and funny as hell, season 2 style. Look Before You Sleep is my most hated (and strangely the one that I have watched more because of tv reruns) of the whole series. Is so bad and boring.

That's not how these keys are working. The mane 6 are getting them for inspiring their element in others.
I don't understand why this concept is hard to grasp. People get new crushes eventually. People don't forget how their old crushes soured on them and nothing in this episode made Trendhoof look like an asshole like Blueblood.

Doubt it, Rainbow Rocks and Rainbow Power are 2 different lines. If they weren't, they'd call it the same thing.
What I wanna know is, who is in this movie. Is it the ponies going through the mirror? Is it the Freshman Fair with Twilight Sparkle who just transferred, or is it the Freshman Fair plus Ponyville's Twilight gone through the mirror once more?

I sort of agree. I think Rarity's antagonism/insincere appreciation of what it is to be a country pony was just the expression of her desperation to reach that writer douche. As fun as I think it is it is to juxtapose Rarity and Applejack against each other (really, I'll probably never get truly tired of it,) another angst episode about differences probably wasn't the best way to do it. However, what I recall of that episode was that it took quite a while and a couple of heartaches before Rarity went bonkers.
The thing that strikes me about that past episode was that the message was pretty weak. It's one thing to try to share someone's interests or appeal to them--what this was about was taking that idea to an extreme. The other thing is that we've revisited familiar ground with Applejack having the higher moral ground over Rarity. As relatable as it was, it's another unfortunate episode for Rarity, and sometimes I wonder what the future will be like for her. I mean, I think she'll always be in an easier position than Twilight or Pinkie as her character is just a good set up for conflict or good lines. But I also hope the writers come up with fresh conflict situations for her. I think the character snap that Rarity went through in Rarity Takes Manehattan was unbelievable.
