Look at the placement of her legs. The entire point is that it looks like he's about to sleep with his own sister.

A quick look at summaries for the games show that they have routes where he and his SISTER become a couple. So the show actively encourages the idea.

The entire point is that fanservice sells and shows like this have fanservice every couple of episodes. The single route where he and his sister become a couple, is a fantasy scenario where they aren't related. The series itself does definitely not encourage the idea of incest given later plot developments. Don't assume it is trying to push incest on you when pretty much any anime like this does the same kind of scene.

Also I thought I'd let it be known that the two best girls are Manami and Kuroneko. Anything else, including route wise pales in comparison.
I can't remember her name, but I liked that girl with the reddish hair twintails thing going, who cosplays.

Yes it is. If the two people were raised as siblings (which they were in this case) then it is still incest.

No it isn't. Plenty of TV shows and movies have covered this in the past. 10 years ago (maybe slightly longer) for example in Eastenders an English soap they showed Sharon who fell in love with the person she'd been raised with as a Brother Dennis and they lived happily ever after until he was murdered.

There's nothing in law to say that you can't have sex or have a relationship with your step brother/step sister/adopted brother/adopted sister. It's only illegal (and technically harmful incase any kids are born to the couple) if there's a blood relation.

However outside of the having kids part I don't see why it's a big deal if a brother and sister want to get it on if they're both adults and know the risks.

Typical anime fanservice is hardly incest. I've accidentally had embarrassing situations with my sister, that doesn't mean it was incest.
Do you like to think about those situations?
Because fanservice is basically just that. It's fantasizing about it.

But I won't judge these anime games. It's moral relativism. I will clear my browser cookies though.

Fanservice shows don't have fanservice scenes involving a brother and their sister unless their is an incestuous subtext. The show has scenes like this to fuel the idea of incest between this pair, and then you get the games and can play through an incest route.

The content of the games are especially important in this thread, because this is a thread about one of the games of the franchise.

No I personally don't like fanservice period as I feel it just cheapens the whole thing. But the idea that because they show her in her underwear, which they do in so many shows these days, is trying to push incest onto the viewer, when the series has a decidedly incest = bad tone, seems silly to me.

Yes, and in the game, in the romantic route in said game, they are not related.

I can't really comment on the show's tone, as I've never seen it. But this entire subgenre of anime/manga just seems to be about sexual escapism. There's definitely something icky going on with it; maybe if not just this series, but other series as well. I don't find it too dissimilar to Western fantasies like stepfather-stepdaughter, which is also morally reprehensible.

What? The show involves a girl who plays pornographic incest games.

The show involves a brother falling and groping his sister who plays pornographic incest games.

The games you can commit incest with your sister who plays pornographic incest games.

That is the very beginning of the series. Her playing porn games is largely irrelevant later on. Heck, she isn't even present at all during some of the story arcs. The series pushes for relationships between the protagonist and other girls far more than it does his sister. And like I said, in the game, the route where they form a relationship, is just fantasy and they are not related.

Fanservice shows frequently have exactly this trope between characters who arent a) attracted to one another or b) are related to one another but have no incestuous subtext. You dont seem to grasp the central comedic aspect of the trope (I'm not saying you have to find it funny, but you should at least be aware of what it is). There also is no incest route in the games, the games feature a fantasy scenario where the two are EXPLICITLY not brother and sister and you can "capture" her in that route.

Actually, as an aisde, how do you see this discussion playing out? You are clearly not going to change your mind nor are you going to convince anyone who's seen the show to change theirs. I suppose you could convince people unfamiliar with the show that its incest city? Clearly doing so matters a lot to you.

The wikipedia article has a fairly solid summary of what its about for people who are genuinely interested (and dont read whatever alt universe wiki people earlier in the thread did).

The show involves a brother falling and groping a girl who plays pornographic incest games.

The games you can commit incest with your sister who plays pornographic incest games.

Thats a pretty disingenuous use of the phrase "The show involves", 10-15 seconds out of 12 or 13 episodes doesnt really count as "involves"

Also, as mentioned above the games explicitly do not involve incest.

It is still incest if they are adopted.
http://definitions.uslegal.com/i/incest/
Laws vary by state, but generally, a person commits incest if he marries or engages in sexual intercourse with a person he knows to be, either legitimately or illegitimately:

His ancestor or descendant by blood or adoption; or
His brother or sister of the whole or half-blood or by adoption;
....
Incest is a crime in all states, even if consensual by both parties.

You still blowing it out of proportion.

Also, he says the (TV) series, so let's leave the weird games out of it.

Yes, and she's ashamed of that and gets into problems with her parents when they find out.

The show involves a brother falling and groping a girl who plays pornographic incest games.

That is clearly an awkward moment for comic relief. The show never suggests that either Kirino or her brother are actually interested in anything incest-related in real life. It's just a fantasy, a harmless fetish that doesn't hurt anybody. Kirino is an absolute role-model student, and because of that, her brother even fights for her being allowed to keep her strange hobby when her parents confront her (but iirc, her parents only find out about her non-adult anime interests, not that whole hentai part or it).

I've really enjoyed the series. Believe it or not: It's a lot more harmless than the premise suggests. Regarding fan-service, it's about on the same level as Haruhi or K-On.

Look at the thread title.

Context of the conversation however was about the (TV) series, not the franchise as a whole. At least in my mind it was.

Also, according to Uthred:

There also is no incest route in the games, the games feature a fantasy scenario where the two are EXPLICITLY not brother and sister and you can "capture" her in that route.

In the US it may be considered incest and a crime, but last I checked the game takes place in Japan, not the US, so I fail to see the relevance. I was pretty sure the problem with incest was the genetic issues in reproducing, if they are not related, there is no such problem.

The question isn't about whether it is a crime, in some countries incest is perfectly legal - doesn't make it stop being incest.

Why are we capturing her :/ Capture her affection?

EDIT: Removed. I'm pretty skiddish about the mods around here, after my last suspension >.>

Holy shit.

The problem with the girls in this anime is that they are blushing constantly. Even when they are pissed/shocked/whatever. Ugh

Come on now, if this is like the PSP game, it's a visual novel with a sister route. They aren't selling this to otaku by promoting healthy brother/sister relationships.

The question was whether Oreimo was a incest anime, somehow it spiraled into this mess.

Out of interest, did you watch the series at all, or are you basing your thoughts based on Internet information?

Yes it does. Do you know what the word incest means? You are quoting the US legal definition of the word. How does that apply to a country that is not the US?

Its almost as if the word cute has more than one meaning, some of which arent shorthand for "I want my dick in it". On English, you crazy, crazy language you.

It does have many meanings. Most people just read it as cute(outside japan) but it's used equally much as describing someone as being dear to you. If a mother says her 20 year old son is kawaii it doesn't mean she thinks he cute but rather that he is very dear to her. Well, it depends on context but point is it doesn't just mean cute.
