I've only seen the anime, but it seemed to mostly be about coming to terms with being yourself and finding friends that can accept you for being yourself and share in those same interests, even if those interests are weird or undesirable like dating sims. I'd imagine the visual novel is the same.
Its very interesting that this series in particular always sparks that discussion with people who haven't seen it, even though this series in content is extremely tame, just because of the name. I almost wonder if that was what they wanted to have happen when the name was chosen. I mean people saying "ew incest dating sims, who would dare associate with any of the creeps that are into that type of thing?" is pretty much the driving force of most of the drama in the show itself, and that's exactly what most of this topic is.
If i could cut out the very occasional and not plot related at all fanservice, it would honestly be a show I could recommend to anyone, including my parents.

Kyousuke's girlfriend became my favorite character in that episode near the end, because rather than chastise him for his collection like I'm sure everyone expected, she's just like 'oh, that's nice'.
It's the artstyle of the manga, and it looks fine enough for me. The characters are what made it for me though, they're really strong.
Oh? I'll finish it eventually then. I did like the sister's voice so I'll watch the show for that.

Also, my first exposure to the series was reading about how the PSP game absolutely buried Persona 2: Eternal Punishment since they came out the same week.

Fire Emblem Awakening was the first time that I came across this trope(?) or whatever it's called. Was kind of bizarre, at the same time I found it kind of hilarious which I probably shouldn't but oh well.

This gif is perfect for anything manga/anime imo.
Anime/Manga are more mature industries compared to gaming, especially when you compared Japan's output between all of them. Not to mention there are many novels which are adapted to both anime/manga. If anything, the roles should be reversed instead.
