NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I turned off the save state on my N8 because I noticed it broke games like Startropics from booting. Anyone else experience that? It was an older firmware maybe.

Been working on catching up Timu and no death running Contra. Lost a life on level 7 last run. Getting closer. Obsessed with this game more than ever. This gif shows how slick it still controls

You're insane!!!=O Great stuff though.

Haha cheers dude!

It's actually really easy thanks to the fire power. It would be hard with just the regular gun. I would say Blaster Master is much harder.

It's definitely not too tricky with a little practice. Shockingly I've hardly played Blaster Master. Think my biggest achievement NES wise was 1CCing NinjaTurtles

That fucking game...

I think 1CCing Ninja Gaiden was my best.

So brutal. I played it so much I can get through it okay but man, getting to that stage took some patience. And 1CCing Ninja Gaiden is ridiculous. I can beat it but I die. A lot

How's about Battletoads?

Everyone really needs to try out Blaster Master. It's one of the best.

When people say 1CC, do they mean no deaths or just no continuing? I'm a little unfamiliar with what a credit got you in the arcades.

The best I can do in Contra (as of now) is beating it without continuing (and without the code) using only the machine gun. Doing no powerup just seems painful to me.

1CC means single credit completion. You're given as many lives as the default setting allows. Many games give you extends after a certain score is achieved as well. It does not necessarily mean you must beat the game on 1 life. That's 1LC.

Battletoads is a great game to show off on because once you remember what to do and all the patterns, everything is easy to do but it looks like you're doing something amazing.

As for someone like me who plays it, Levels 7, 9, 11 and 12 still give me trouble even with memorization.

Clinger Wingers is the worst part of Battletoads and I would imagine a stage that gives even experts a problem due to how absolutely unforgiving it is.

Sometimes I can get through that stage flawlessly and other times I mess up badly...damn stage requires so much precision with the dpad.

Haha I rest my case.

It is the quintessential Battletoads level to me. Looks awesome and should be fun, but they did enough wrong to make it a horrible chore.

I never got past the snakes.

Grabbed this after only hearing about it recently, I love how many great games are on this platform that I've never played!

It's weird how it's a 1987 game but comes in the 'mid sized' Famicom box that was typically a translation size between the original cart sized boxes of the pulse line and the eventual 'standard' size Famicom box which most companies used from 1985 onward (eg the original Konami orange box line are this size)

Of course 'standard' is a relative term when it comes to Famicom boxes...

Interesting, I lost auctions for Heavy Barrel, Pinball, and Rockman 6 on Yamatoku the other day...were you bidding against me? :P

Nevermind, the Heavy Barrel I was bidding on on Yamatoku was cart-only. :P

You die a lot? In some of my runs I don't even die, like my youtube playthrough of it. Mastering 6-2, 6-3 and Jaquio are key to success. Then again I made 6-2 look really easy, I mean I only got hit once on that section, lol.

You're a savage Timu! Love the commitment to not just beating these games but no death running them, superb. I'm pretty sure on my Turtles Youtube playthrough I don't die at all. And the Technodrome was in the final place I looked!

Link your youtube vid!!!

And well, when I get the chance no death is possible for a lot of games!!!

I'll be getting back into dat retro mindset this fall when the NES Pro gets release!! :D

As for Blaster Master, it's the quintessential game from my youth that I remember more fondly than the experience must have been. That game is super tough. Or maybe I just stink at games.

My first visit to this thread. How much conversation about the NES Mini goes on? Anybody upset & slightly perplexed at the omission of Rad Racer? I feel it should have been included.

I bought it on Yahoo ;) And have had that Rockman 6 for a long time (it was a lot cheaper when I bought it).

Welcome to the thread! I'm sure we'd be happy to talk about the NES Mini. I never played Rad Racer if I'm being wholly honest. The exclusions really makes you wonder if there's going to be a second one at some point.

Welcome! We talk about all kinds of ways to play Nes here, but I feel most regular posters are playing their games on original hardware with original cartridges. But there is nothing wrong with enjoying a product like the NES Mini either.

Just occurred to me after hitting Area 3 in Blaster Master: The only part of this game's OST i've ever really heard is Area 1. Every thing after that is completely alien (heh) to me. From the music to the stage layouts.

Also you guys were right about the doors.

Haha I rest my case.

the problem is that it boils down to how the game reads inputs and such. Worn controllers don't help matters. The best time I've had was with 4 microswitches/4 way joystick with no in betweens if memory serves. It's why the "pause then switch directions" thing works so well with that stupid level.

Boss fight happening with no checkpoint is hair pulling too lol.

Still waiting on whatever modern day Battletoads stuff they were hinting at, but I feel like it's just related to the character being in KI.

Back on track-it's an exciting time to be able to pick between so many newer NES options these days. I'm happy that more people get to experience these dam things lol

Clingerwinger is the one stage in Battletoads I hate. Still I'm usually able to do it without losing too many lives even on a HDTV. Only one or two times I got frustrated, said "fuck this", and used the pause trick which makes it impossible to lose.

Area 4...didnt think i'd have to do something like that to get here, but it does sorta make sense.

That's probably the trickiest part in the game. You had to remember you saw H power ups in the beginning.

What about Volkmire's Inferno, Terra Tubes and Rat Race?

Oh I love them. Volkmire's Inferno might be my favorite stage on NES. So fast and intense with a lot of variety and great excitement music that speeds up as you go through it.

Rat Race is a cinch as long as you know to hit the rat.

I don't like the last stage at all, lol.=p
