My Bionic Commando came in today and I still hate this game. It's so unforgiving, I hate the swinging mechanic. How do you get continues?

I hated it in the beginning too like I said that a few posts ago. That's the worst part. Wait until you get the rocket launcher in a few stages.

Finally:

I used to kinda hate this game, but after really playing it and learning its mechanics, its now one of my absolute favorite Nes-games. I really like the tight gameplay, the very varied level design, the rpg lite-elements, and of course the story and presentation. Its pretty much the perfect plattform game, as it is both very well crafted and feels really unique with its bionic arm. Keep at it OnPoint!

Here's hoping 8bitdo gets a firmware update out soon that allows usage of the NES Classic Mini controller connected to a Wii Remote.

I'd love to have a wireless controller for my NES that was the real deal.

Congrats! It won me over as well. The arm is definitely rewarding once mastered and gives the game some freshness over the hordes of platformers on the system. The RPG stuff I could do without though, at least the decoder things.

Hey just wondering. Is there an adapter that goes from a Wii Classic controller to an NES socket?

I kinda want to use the new NES controllers on my AVS, if no adapter I might see if it's possible to change out the guts.

EDIT: Apparently you can swap out the internals.

Also, does anyone know if Australian PAL NES controllers work fine on NTSC systems? I heard theres some PAL controllers that may not?

So frustrated by the NES Mini situation. I pre-ordered from Zavvi (UK) in July. I've heard nothing from them. My order is still 'awaiting stock pick'. Absolutely useless

Atlantis no Nazo is only on the Famicom mini because of Game Center CX, right? Or does it have some weird nostalgic relevance for Japanese gamers? I think its by the far the worst game across both mini systems
except for maybe The Adventure of Link

It was an early hit on the console, it obviously sold a lot based on the number of carts you see in shops/Kanteidan. But yeah it's not the best, one of those 'had to be there' games.

Adventure of Link is a top 3 game on the system!

Adventure of Link is a top 3 game on the system!

Maybe that it's one of the top 3 ambitious games on the system, but top 3 overall? I enjoy at least three of the Mega Man games on the NES more than I like that game, and it's not even my favorite series in the library.

Bionic Commando the original is just as fun as Rearmed. I thought i'd miss being able to throw barrels at people, but just the act of chaining swings together is cool enough.

BC is a great pick. I burned Bionic Commando 99 to a cart years ago (didnt change the label or anything). Restores the story/some imagery. Uncut or not- the game is definitely top 5 in the NES library for me. The story gets a smidge more serious when it's not the "Badds" haha

Ok so Battletoads turbo tunnel isnt hard, but whats with the final ramp? The rest have auto-propelled me where im supposed to go, but this one seems to just make me clip through the next platform the majority of the time.

Just don't move the control pad when you hit a ramp. Or if you have to, move right. Never any other direction.

We should do Battletoads one month.

Hell let's do it this month. BC was very short.

My god would I love to do a youtube playthrough on that game. Battletoads would probably be the hardest playthrough I do alongside Ninja Gaiden 3, Ghost N Goblins, The Adventures of Bayou Billy, TMNT 1 and more.

I need to beat the last stage though.

I love Battletoads so much. I still have never beat it without cheating, the closest I've ever gotten is the final stage, which basically took me a whole summer of practice.

Turbo Tunnel is a cinch for me now, can usually clear it first try every time. There's much harder levels later on that jever get mentioned in most Battletoads discussions: Volkmeire's Inferno, Rat Race, and Clinger Winger come to mind. Oh, and that sewer level too, it can f*** right off.

This arrived today:

Haven't really dove in yet, but looks cool at first glance. I like it kind of being broken up into three periods of the console's life.

Got mine yesterday

I loved how they used the pictures from the old nintendo guide for SMB3

Funny enough they didnt add entire maps for certain games. even though they don't need them it would have been nice. the maps they do have are good

thats my only fault with the guide

Yeah Turbo Tunnel is cake honestly, but its just odd with that final ramp. Its like the damn cycle goes right through the first platform.

I somehow didnt see this post before, but thanks retro brother! I agree on the decoder stuff, but I kinda like that the game gives you the ability to grind if you want to have an easier time. Not that its really needed though, since lives are plentiful after learning how to earn continues.

This guy know's what's up Adventure of Link is not only a top tier NES game but a top Zelda game overall too. Action platforming perfection mixed with an expansive overworld RPG. Amazing game

For me, the top 3 games are the obvious Mega Man 2 and SMB3, and Zelda 2. And I actually think Zelda 2 is on the same level. I just love how the game is structured with the overworld (exploration) and dungeons (action), the easy but still deep combat, the scale of the game, the fair and enjoyable challenge, the secrets and so on. Its the perfect 8-bit adventure game imo, and its sad the game got such a bad reputation, as I would have loved more games in a similar vein. I guess there is stuff like (the significantly weaker) Gargoyles Quest-series at least.

So why havent i heard about this before, looks awesome. Have it been discussed here before? Anyways, I need it!

Top 3 for me would likely be Castlevania, Zelda 1 and Ninja Gaiden.

I love the thought of Zelda II. I just think it's not well realized enough.

Then at least we agree that its a shame there are not more games like it. What do you think is not well realized? Love your three top games as well btw, especially Ninja Gaiden which just plays so smooth.

Top 3 for me: Zelda 1, Battletoads, and Dragon Warrior 4.

Zelda 2 would probably be in my top 10. Two things Zelda 1 did better was offer more freedom and it had a second quest. And it could be annoying in Zelda 2 if you lost 3 lives and lost all your exp points.

Dragon Warrior 4 is definitely amazing, my favorite jrpg after Final Fantasy VI.

Its always annoying to die and have to redo stuff in games, but that annoyance is also part of what makes it feel so good to succeed imo. Btw, I always felt the original Zelda was more frustrating, with the way you had to go around burning random bushed, bomb random walls and go through the forest in a very specific order. Still an awesome game though.

Hmm my top 3...

Contra
Castlevania III/Akumajou Densetsu
Super Mario Bros 3

I mean srsly guys.

I mean we obviously aren't going I agree lol but... There's an uncomfortable lack of direction and clarity in what you're supposed to do. Losing all your experience when dying sucks, making jump deaths particularly annoying. Death Mountain is ridiculous. I hate being in the swamp in the overworld or in level. I never liked all the aribtrarily hidden stuff on the maps. The enemy encounters are a little too high. I'm not the biggest fan of how it handles. It just feels like a chore to get to the dungeons. In fact that's what it is -- the whole game feels like a chore to me. I want to like it, I respect it, but I just never have fun playing it.

I do wish there were more games on the system as ambitious as it was. For what it's worth I love 2 of your top 3 as well. The top tier of NES stuff is so hard to rank out numerically.

Super Mario 3
Dragon Warrior 3
Kirby's Adventure

I'd be tempted to put DW4 in there as well but man I really love Kirby. People like to hate on it because it's pretty easy but I really appreciate how chill that game is to play.

Castlevania 3 is probably 4th for me. And Contra is also awesome. So many great games on this system!

Yeah it's full of stuff, but uncharacteristically sloppy for Nintendo. It plays a lot more like a PC action RPG of the era, like an MSX or IBM game - ambitious but feels unrefined. Battle of Olympus is quite similar in more ways than one.

My post was intentionally a bit troll-y but it wasn't until I started reading GAF like ten years ago that I discovered people genuinely liked Adventure. I honestly dislike everything about it except the music.

A top three? Is that even possible?

Edit - and the title screen is awesome, i'll give it that.

I think the idea that Zelda II was generally disliked is a historical revision that started in the mid-90s after people had experienced ALttP and LA. I even held that revised narrative in my own head for a long time.

But the reality was, I really enjoyed Zelda II as a kid, and played it from beginning to end many times. Every kid I knew liked it, too. But I forgot all about that for a long time. It wasn't until I replayed it on the 3DS VC a few years ago that I remembered how great it was. (But man, was I thankful for save states when I made it to the final palace.)

Not what I remember, everyone was so excited that Zelda 3 was returning to overhead view. Even back then Zelda 2 was seen as a 'failed experiment' We got Australian and UK magazines here and that seemed to be the narrative.

Bionic Commando was one of my favourite games when I was a kid. It's not too hard as long as you make sure to keep a stock of those continue icons from the overhead minigame. You can also farm exp to get more hp.

The music is my favourite thing about it. So downbeat!

Zelda 2 won the Nintendo Power 1988 Game of the Year award voted on by readers over Super Mario 2, Blaster Master, Bionic Commando, and the original Zelda. http://nintendo.wikia.com/wiki/1988_Nintendo_Power_Awards

Thinking that Zelda 2 went in the wrong direction was something that came up in the hype of Zelda 3.

I can't speak for the world at large, but I know I always preferred the original Zelda to Adventures of Link, even as a kid. That said, what's being proved here? Who cares? If you like it or you don't, either view is fine.

Everything I've read about this book is that it's full of reprinted text from Nintendo Power, low-res images stretched out, lots of typos, and, as you mentioned, missing maps. What bothers me is that they didn't bother covering all the games included with the NES Classic. That tells me they couldn't collect enough material online quick enough, and it had to be ready to ship by the console's launch.

The images are totally fine IMO, they look just as good as the Nintendo Power issues from the 80s-90s era, so they're perfectly readable.

As far as how certain games were included or excluded, who knows. The book is already huge (though I think dedicating 50 pages to SMB3 might be excessive), so maybe they just wanted to cover the titles for which players would most likely need guidance, or those which have higher preference among classic NES gamers.

The book is certainly a victim of subpar editing, in any case. (I've never seen a Prima guide without that problem, though.)

I love BC on the NES and Rearmed. I'm very slowly playing through BC: RA2 on the XBLA. It has flaws (and jumping, ewww) but I prefer the linear design in contrast to the original. But that may be just old age/low attention span talking.

I have very fond memories of playing through BC on the NES.

I have the hardcover/slipcover book and I'm leaning towards returning it, due to some of the reasons cited above. It's great some folks are appreciating it but I was hoping for more of an overview book than a strategy guide. u actually don't mind the rehab part but the book just isn't well organized (also noted above) and the quality is overall lacking.

I was probably expecting something like a retrospective-flavored version of my beloved Official Nintendo Player's Guide, which features a nice mix of overview info and strategy tips.

Agreed on all points. To me it is an 8-bit Souls game. But better. I also think the difficulty is wildly overblown. Once you get your technique down for certain enemies and get over a couple of admittedly challenging difficulty spikes the game plays out perfectly.

Interesting. I distinctly remember it being roundly disliked by my friends and my cousins who I played it with at the time. It was a grower for me and I didn't truly love it until recent years.

As for top 3 NES games. That is an impossibly difficult list isn't it. Too many amazing games that all have a shout for being in there.

Yeah the Souls-comparison is good. I always think about the Souls-games as what would have happened if old-school games were redone in 3D with the same design sensibilities. That is a series which where the difficulty reputation is wasly overblown as well imo.

About the popularity back in the day, I also remember Zelda 2 being a big deal and in my group and gaming magazines actually being much more liked than the more cryptic original. After Zelda 3, this somewhat changed though, but it was only after more modern Zelda-fans (often first playing the series with the much easier and more puzzle-based 3D-games) went back and played the earlier games, that i feel the game got this "black sheep" reputation. Not that it matters of course, both views on the game are perfectly legitimate.

So, anybody else been able to get anywhere in Bionic Commando? I kinda want to start on one of the runners up, maybe going to check out Shadowgate since I never played it before.

I haven't gone back to BC. I probably should give it another run.

That said, we need 5 nominations for January 2017, so gentlemen, start your engines and list some off!
