NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I found someone selling an RGB modded NES for $300 on another forum. I'm SO, SO tempted to buy it....After seeing all my other systems in RGB and some of Shining's/the other poster who made the custom fami/nes pictures of their RGB consoles, I just really want to have my nes look that crisp. That's damn near the price of a PS4 though...
If there aren't any artifacts / heavy jailbars as a result of the mod process, then that is a VERY GOOD price. Consider that the PPU alone these days runs $150-$200.

Even if the universal PPU gets into production or Bunnyboy suceeds with his HDMI NES project, I doubt either option will get you a complete unit for much under $300.

On the flipside, you might end up feeling oogy if Hyperkin pulls off the Retron 5....

I thought my NES was dead after the power light stopped working, but I took it down to my FLGS yesterday and they told me it was the AC adapter. $7 later I got a working NES again. Also picked up Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers for $14. Not sure if that was a good deal, but I enjoyed that game as a kid and it was missing from my collection. I also saw at least half a dozen Contras priced at $40. Has that game gotten that rare?

I am still on the lookout for Ducktales 2 for cheap because I sure as hell am not willing to pay Ebay prices for that.

If you're talking loose, your store's mark up on Chip & Dale was about $4 above what I'd consider the free market price. But at a retail shop that's not too silly. $40 for Contra is a total rip. No, it isn't rare, but it is VERY popular. Same goes for the Mega Man games. A total demand issue as opposed to any sort of production limit. Contra goes for about $15-$20 loose; tack on another $5 or $10 for the manual. Boxed varies widely because condition is a huge factor; I'd say $40 for a complete copy of Contra would be fair.

Good luck with Duck Tales 2. You're going to need to find that "in the wild" for anything under ridiculous prices.

I'd consider this a good starting point for typical pricing:

Just keep in mind that it is ONE source and eBay is its main metric...

Clean it, and disable the 10-NES chip
The top-loader doesn't have the security chip.

The likelihood that the amount of moisture in your breath will damage connectors is so minuscule it's not even worth mentioning. I've had games that I've blown in since 1985 that still look brand new and have 0 signs of corrosion. Bit rot is the only thing that should concern anyone about old carts.

I'm not sure how blowing in a cart 10 times every day would simulate blowing it out every so often for a few months. That being said, even the games i've owned since childhood dont look like that...so its still not really anything to worry about. Besides, you usually only need to clean/blow a cart out once.

Then again i just used those official nintendo cleaning swabs back then too...

For my birthday, my friend got me copies of Baseball Stars, Athena, Maniac Mansion, and motherfuckin' POPEYE! I haven't played Popeye in years so I'm totally looking forward to that...

Athena is one of the worst NES games ever created. Burn it.

That said, Popeye is the only decent arcade port of the game to come to a home system. Good times.

S.C.A.T/Final Mission.. how good is it? Should I just buy the Virtual Console version or is it good enough to throw down for a Fami cartridge?

It's an ok shooter with some cool tunes, but nothing more. Pretty boring level design. The intro on the Famicom version is different from the US and is a bit more grim and apocalyptic.

About a year ago SCAT was $10-20. I actually passed on a CIB that was $40 because I don't care for boxes, I just want cart and manual. Of course, we get the AVGN video that mentions the game, and suddenly it's "worth" $80 loose.

It's pretty much the last NES game on my want list, but I am willing to wait ten years to get it at a decent price.

Really?? AVGN made it boost in sales?

...my band wants to cover the music from it..I just wanted to play it in context of the rocking tunes! The plights of a collector.

The AVGN effect is no joke. Good or bad, people watch him cuss up a storm at a game, and whether he likes it or not, the sales jump. Sometimes they stay up there too...

... but he can't live forever right?

Heh, similar effect happened with Run Saber on SNES IIRC. There was a popular YT video that talked the game up and the price skyrocketed immediately.

I always thought the SNES had an interesting tagline. "Now you're playing with power. Super Power!". Shows its ties to the NES, but it's the next new thing with Super Power!

Nintendo should have done the same thing with the Wii U to show it's a new system. "We like to play in HD". Or something, I dunno.

The Famicom cart can be got for about a quarter of that price if you can go that way.

How about

"Not a Wii Accessory"

This is my new white whale. The Famicom gun from Nintendo of Japan. I bet this will be hard to find cheap, but it's so mind-numbingly awesome compared to our zapper.

MAN!!! What an awesome find! Use it! Tell us how it is. I am so jealous.
Oh, I meant I'm searching. But if I do find it I'll tell you guys all about it.

that thing is badass...looks like it was lifted straight out of Hogan's Alley!

it's crazy that we got the zapper that we did, and then the 80s shootings (as i recall, a few kids were waving real-ish looking guns around cops at night or something and got shot?) made all of that go away, i always assumed thats why we went to the ridiculous white & orange instead of white & grey.

Japan didn't fuck around when it came to lightguns. The Dendy (Russian Famiclone) had a realistic-looking lightgun too.

Definitely wouldn't fly here.

That must be why we ended up with crazy looking bazooka shits on SNES and Genesis. I never had the NES zapper but I did have the one for Master System and it was very similar.

A friend gave me his top loader NES and man does it work better than the original one. But it's RF out only!

Has anyone modded a top-loader for composite output? How hard was it?

I've been hitting the classic Mega Man games hardcore the last week or so. While 3 does get love, I think it's still legitimately under-rated compared to 2. They both have their pros and cons, but to me they are equals.

5 and 6 are pretty darn good; it's a shame Capcom was rushing programming by that point, as the good bits in both games could be combined together to make one hell of a standout.

I actually had quite a bit of fun with 1. Ironically, it's the game that turned me off to the series so many years ago. It wasn't really until the Xtreme and Zero series that I came back to give the franchise another shot. MM1 has its faults, but I can appreciate now how clever the level designs are. It wouldn't be my go-to since it lacks the variety of it's sequels, but I consider it legit.

You know what's funny? I played through 4, beat it, and utterly forgot doing so within days. I had to jog my memory at MMHP; I don't think I recall finding anything bad about it, though the Mega Buster is like a hot knife through butter. I may have to play it again...

I have the PS1 version of 8 at home. Wondering if I should bother.

Apologies for breaking etiquette and posting twice in succession, but I wanted to share a picture of my new precious: Crisis Force converted from Famicom to NES with custom box and label.

Sadly, a Gyromite board had to be orphaned to make this possible. For those that don't know, this is absolutely not a reproduction. It's currently not possible to create a reproduction of Crisis Force for the NES since Konami used a one-off mapper for the game.

awesome, Crisis Force is my fav Famicom game that i own, even the opening cutscene rules!
recently got Adventure Island 3 Famicom, only have to get the rather more expensive AD4 to complete the set - i'm in for a long wait i suspect

I'm not going to fault you for something like that. That's a damn fine job. Glad to see more people appreciate that game, it's just so... good. :D I showed it at the game store I work at a couple of times and both times people were amazed it was a Famicom game.

I am absolutely in love with Crisis Force. In so many ways, it looks and plays like a shmup on the Genesis would... every time I play I'm amazed Konami squeezed all that outta a lowly 6502 chip. I bet their custom mapper helped though :)

When I got the idea to convert, I felt like I had to do it with reverence. I may have had to crack open a Famicom cart (still intact, btw) but now I've got a legit looking NES version. Oh, if only!

Recca gets all the love, but Crisis Force is where it's at -- because it has artistry to boot.

I don't understand. I didn't realize the NES could support those custom Japanese mappers. Does that mean if you stuck a Famicom to NES converter on a Castlevania III cart the Japanese music would work?

Sorry, new to the thread.

Where's the line drawn when talking about reproductions?

in general most are pretty open to it...although if you're getting repros of stuff not released here otherwise i think it's easier for some than if it's just stupid-expensive shit.

personally, i don't care either way, just happy to see people play these games. go nuts.

There are actually two parts to the answer to this question.

1. In MOST cases, yes, if you yank the adapter out of the proper NES cartridge or use a Famicom-to-NES adapter, then Famicom games that use custom mappers will work just fine in an NES.

2. The exceptions to the rule are games that use enhanced audio: ex. Castlevania III and Mr. Gimmick. The games themselves play but the extra connector pins that would pipe to the Famicom's audio line don't have anywhere to go in an NES. The two ways to accomplish it are to rewire your NES or to do what Callan Brown did and, I kid you not, wire audio hardware into an NES cart with a patch cable sticking out.
