Use common sense.

If the PS5 GPU hardly reached 2.23ghz there would be no need for the console to be that big and use a large fan and liquid metal cooling. All those things are because of the high clock speed.

The proof is literally in the design.

2.23 GHz is the max for the GPU. The downclocking is based on workload to remain within the power budget. Smartshift allows the PS5's unused CPU to be shifted to the GPU. Otherwise you are correct, the expectation is the GPU stays at or very close to the max
This^ right here is what many fail to understand.
-"The downclocking is based on workload to remain within the power budget."
-"Smartshift allows the PS5's unused CPU to be shifted to the GPU."

People like Dealer and Madz spread so much FUD about Smartshift it's insane.

The biggest question that people have about the clocks is whether it's the peak clocks or the game clocks. I really hope the PS5s can hold it's 2.23 GHz clocks the vast majority of the time otherwise it would be a tad disappointing if the average clock is something like 1.8 GHz.

I'm really hoping AMDs event answers this question.

To add to duhmetree duhmetree 's post there was this slide from Road to PS5:

So it will boost to 2.23GHz until/unless the workload exceeds the power budget. Then if it can it will shift power from the CPU to the GPU and if still not enough it will downclock up to 2-3% in a worst case scenario.

That is my understanding of all the explanations at least.

timestamped; where Cerny is talking about the CPU/GPU.

It will be at or close to the CPU/GPU capped limits. 3.5Ghz for the CPU and 2.23ghz for the GPU.

I for one would have to commend Dealer. At least he's smoking his own merchandise.

"Worse case games" would definitely be from Bethesda. Their games would dropped the PS5 frequency to 200mhz 🤭

Good thing Sony might not have to worry about that. 😄

Yeah it's always at 3.5 and 2.23. That's the cap frequency. It then adjust when needed to.

I think in one of the DF articles, Cerny even said developers can lock those frequencies for development purposes.

I have a theory that when the PS5 doesn't need those frequencies it will downclock them so the system produces less heat and noise.

Like when your navigating the UI or looking at a 2D map those kinds of situations.

To my understand that's pretty much it. You don't need to use 10TF to render the pause menu, so in circumstances where the necessary resources to deliver the target frame has an overflow, you can appropriately downclock. I am sure it gets more complex than that, but that's how I always consider it with the SmartShift tech. So when situations where the GPU isn't under full-load, like looking up at a sky or an empty room, the hardware resources can either be diverted to other areas to maintain a specific power budget as set by Sony/Developers, or reduce overall consumption and ensure quiet operation of the console itself.

It's not Microsoft... just the sad little weirdo who runs that Twitter account trying to pass off his own designs as official advertising.

Possibly the saddest thing I've ever seen, and I watched Goldberg vs The Undertaker.
You heartbreaking bastard, you just HAD to remind me of that...

Looking back at those old Osiris posts I spotted this one.

Jeez things have changed so much since then.
Yeah, to be fair Sony was being unreasonably vague. Everything's lined up where things seem so far so good. Ironically Sony is the only one showing games running on the hardware and ray tracing at launch.

whatever happened to Osiris anyways? Remember when he hinted if you like capcom and Konami would be exclusive or something? Was he referring to silent hill reboot?

Looks like arsehole Jeff Money Grubb really wants to work for Microsoft. In his latest video, "he tests" the terrible Xbox pubicG port on the XSX vs XB1X and, oh boy ...at one point he literally stands still, staring at the floor on the XSX copy and claims "much better framerate", 60fps locked while on the XB1X he of course is looking straight (45fps).

The copy looks shit on the next gen console.

LOL... Oh MadZ, how have you fallen (imo) .. He's gone full team green, even has Timdog on for live chats..haha..

So we got to the point where they can't accurately pixel count games due to great reconstruction techniques. It seems they think it's dynamic resolution just becuase Insomniac has done that in the past but they're not sure. But anyway, now I know why they said they needed to find another way to analyze and compare games, bacause unless the devs straight out say it, there's no way to tell if it's a native resolution or not.
So basically this means there's no need anymore for native 4k, other than draining your console's resources.

The copy looks shit on the next gen console. Shitty textures, less objects and a perma fog over the map? Not sure if there´s a day, night change ... yet, he still had to "cheat" to make the XSX copy look better.

So you think that when the XSX is running that game, it won't run better than when the OneX is running it?

Why does the One X version have better visuals?

He's lost his credibility a long time ago anyway, why stop now 😂

Sony could easily gone above 2.23ghz, the cooling has the ability to power above that but logic in some might fail completely.

Ps5 design let's it hit 3.5ghz CPU + 2.23GHZ GPU at 99.99% of the time it is required.

Why does the x1x looks miles better than xsx in these shots ?
