It's a family venue. They also air to millions and millions of family audiences. What if little old Jimmy or Sara watches it and starts flipping off the family dog or neighbors next door? Profanity and symbols like that are not acceptable in the public's eye.

Does GAF want to hear profanity or see the middle finger being raised around their kids?

If they're that concerned about it they should have had her sign a contract for the appearance and paid her to perform in a wholesome fashion.

I turned my television off in disgust upon witnessing the erection of her middle digit. They made the right call in their effort to maintain a family friendly atmosphere.

The NFL is going to get laughed out of court on this one.

The "family" environment they're promoting within the NFL currently consists of vulgarity, raughtyness , and even discrimination (against gays and possibly others) from their own players and staff, but a middle finger shown in a one-off performance (no one remembers), by a preformer that isn't even affiliated with the NFL? Give me a fucking break.

I don't even like M.I.A. and I can tell this is absolute bullshit.

A sport where men train all year around for the sole purpose of launching their bodies at other men violently is concerned about a gesture that was offensive in the 1930s?

Did they actually lose sponsors over that ?

Goddell's NFL basically. Super petty and obsessed with being this ultra paragon of morality. Meanwhile, the Colts owner got a DUI recently, but nothing is going to happen since he's a one of Goddell's bosses.

After the CTE stuff, it's hard to like this league.

I didn't think the middle finger is a bad deal anymore.

Isn't it better than saying "fuck"? She did the right thing LOL

I think the better point is that you can't have a form of entertainment who's core is violence and anger be a TV-Y situation. Are brawls acceptable? Is swearing on the field acceptable? Is violent behavior in the stands acceptable? Because all of those things happen and is televised every year and generally goes unpunished. So why is MIA being sued for 16 million dollars?

The NFL should be TV-14. If it was, this wouldn't be an issue. But the NFL spends more time treating the symptoms than the disease because, in the end, they still like those controversial moments because it brings in the ratings. MIA will probably lose this lawsuit, but she's totally right.

Seems the NFL loves going hard after dark-skinned female performers. Didn't Justin walk away scot-free for knowingly exposing Janet's boob?

The restitution they are seeking is obviously way too high, but she did breach the contract and tried to be edgy to grab headlines. I doubt many people find "the finger" to be offensive in this age, but she knows she wasn't allowed to and still did it. I'm sure she's also aware of Jackson stunt and the grief the NFL took for that. The whole thing struck me as really immature.

I had no idea Superbowl halftime acts weren't paid
It's a privilege for the performer to dance around for millions of drunks to silly pop music for an organization full of degenerates, drunks, addicts, abusers and criminals.

I guess they're paid in viewership. Over 100 million people in the US watch their performance, and even more across the world.

To be honest, after the first time I saw someone do it - the movie Starman, since you didn't ask - I was eager to try it out. I didn't know what it meant, just that it was bad.

the amount they want is ridiculous, but why in the world would she have done that in the first place? she was asking for trouble for no good reason

Because it's television and who cares? Cartoon Network is allowed to say Shit after 10pm. Family Guy makes rape jokes in the same prime time block.

Depictions of brutal violence and alarming gore is okay, as long as there isn't any dirty language.

Her whole image is basically "fuck the establishment". A middle finger's a shallow gesture, but it's the kind of thing MIA does.

The programs with rape jokes and profanity have a warning beforehand. The superbowl is marketed as a family friendly program despite the inherent violence of the sport. The same time Sesame Street airs during the day, I'm sure I can catch a program on a premium network with adult languange, extreme violence, and sexual situations. If Big Bird started giving the finger and someone came on the screen and flashed the audience, I'm sure plenty of parents would be upset instead of rationalizing that other programs exist with even worse content.

I'm all for fining MIA for her horrible, horrible singing, but the NFL are the Westboro Church of the sports leagues world. Bleeptards.

pretty much. although I wouldn't go that far. but yes they suck as an organization.

when I saw the MS-NFL deal for X1 I thought, well, those two bedfellows deserve each other... like a double punch of monopolistic, greedy behaviour

I don't give a fuck about MIA but this is absurd

Seems like a case of the NFL wanting to put its foot down and prevent other artists from doing this in the future if given the platform.

I don't think they want the money, they want to convince anyone who does a half time show to stick to the contract. The fallout from Janet Jackson was incredible, the money the NFL is paying lawyers to do this probably seems worth it.

I believe the teams pay taxes.

Yeah... the NFL is like a private regulatory organization overseeing trades, spending, revenue sharing, media contracts, rules, etc between owners. NFL is funded and controlled by the owners. The commissioner is seen as the chief advocate on behalf of the owners, usually when negotiating with media and the NFLPA union.

So, basically, the govt gets their tax money from the owners. Taxing the NFL might be seen as taxing owner revenue twice, but I don't know much about such adult matters despite my age.

That's pretty dumb. You should at least expect a middle finger from Mia.

This. Isn't this one of the things she normally does. Also as far as things on live tv go this is pretty damn tame. I don't remember people making a big deal out of it when it happen. Especially nothing like the thing with Janet Jackson. That's like having the Red Hot Chili Peppers play and get upset one of them is shirtless when he's always shirtless when he plays. That's his thing. 16 million is insane though.
