The PSX innovated.
It was a simple thing (CD Media), but it changed the entire industry view.
Most times someone succeeds in turning the tables in an industry its because they innovated and changed the model against which products are evaluated and compared. People writing Wii of becuase it was different were missing the very point.

I'm not sure what you're trying to get at, but i think it's pretty clear that a lot of people were very impressed with the graphics in DQ8 and many are salivating at the prospect of taking that kind of graphics style into next gen.
For myself, i can do without it, but there are people out there who see it differently.. there are also other franchises that would never see a fully next gen upgrade

No, I disagree with that statement. If Sony can't manufacture the consoles to sell it has an impact on the "war", they don't get a free pass because they didn't meet manufacturing quotas. That's part of the game. Microsoft had the same problem, and even Nintendo is running into supply issues for the second time this year, the first being DS Lite in Japan. No, it'd be a disaster only if you are picky about graphics. Anyway, have you graphics whore ever thought that the PS3/360 winning by a landslide would be a disaster for those who don't enjoy overpriced consoles and samey games?
Perosnally I hope the Wii wins this gen with the 360 a close second so we get a mix of both styles at a reasonable price.

Saturn, TurboCD and Genesis CD all predated it. The Playstation didn't take over just because of the CD. It was a confluence of multiple things. Fairly easy to program for (not like the 7 processor saturn), powerful enough to do reasonable 3d stuff, and most of all, the cost to press the CDs was so cheap that they could put forward a much better business model. On top of that, the worked closely and courteously with developers, unlike Nintendo, who as a company believed themselves to be on top of the industry and not subject to publisher's wants and needs.Pellham said:
