Nintendo 3DS Japanese Launch Thread

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
People should really take a look at the OP before asking questions.....Cheesemeister keeps updatin the first post with new information.

I just had a thought...

Does the system offer any kind of expansion ability? Especially for peripherals? For some people with disabilities, they may not be able to hold the console in a position to see the 3D effect. It would be nice to have the option plug in 3rd party controllers attached to the system by a cable. And for everyone, some AR games might work better if you can keep the 3DS propped up on stand, nice and secure, while you use a joystick sitting on the table.

I think what's throwing people off here is the Star Viewer and Nintendogs being able to tell which mascot card they're looking at. But I'm sure that's probably a simple shape/color recognition.

They couldn't simply release more characters as cards without also updating the software to recognize each new card, and the more there are the more likely the software will start confusing one for another.

I'm interested more in AR games that project a game onto reality around a single card, rather than games with tons of cards that act as a tabletop game with the AR only serving as a viewport into the game.

the software side worries me. Unless the program is inside the game cart and not stored on the hardware I can see problems with lack of memory

I am assuming the only reason that the Star Viewer is not animated is the lack of memory
and they only animated a few AR games stored in Hardware while the Nintendogs' AR is stored on cart. Even so I am still a bit worried I have only seen AR of ONE dog not any dog and I have yet to see AR of any Cats

so what gives?

It depends.

Apparently people who've had prior practice with stuff like the cross-eyed method have far less trouble with it.

If anything, it will strengthen your eyes in the long run. May be some problems at first but apparently people are adjusting pretty well.

Random thought about the upcoming browser: I wonder if it will be specifically coded to ensure the likes of Youtube 3D works natively. No idea if that would require Flash to be aware of the 3DS's 3D-ness or what, though.

Any game can take advantage of the AR capabilities of the system.

There is no set "program" that handles it. All developers have to do is tap into the two cameras.

The reason Star Viewer isn't animated is because Nintendo is lazy. It has nothing to do with memory, which the system has plenty of. I'm pretty sure more dogs and cats have to be unlocked, and everyone is just using the default right now.

It will be like 3D film, cross eye 3D, and other such things your eyes and brain are not used to. I know some people reported headaches and eye strain from 3D film, especially those inexperienced with 3D.

It's probably going to be more widespread than Nintendo let on, but I'm confident it will be one of those things a vast majority of people will get used to quite quickly. If on first viewing the effect is too intense, slide back the slider to something more comfortable and slowly turn it up over a few sessions. Help your eyes get used to it.

As I said earlier, I know when I started doing cross eye 3D there was a little bit of strain, but now I can do them quickly and easily with no strain at all.

Youtube would need to add support for the 3DS hardware first
or at the very least for those kinds of parallax barrier screens

YouTube partners with LG on mobile 3D videos

I hope its not a case of LG owning the patent for mobile 3D video

I think Iwata hinted at 3D Video would be possible for the 3DS with a system update
its only 3D photos now right?

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
Alright two updates;

1. Sonic Classic Collection which is region locked (DSi enhanced) doesn't play in a Japanese 3DS.

2. My eyes don't hurt, deal with it.

If they're smart, they'll get some of the official magazines to do a series of poster-sized copies in the mag. I'd probably spend a few quid to get a professionally-printed large copy.

I think Nintendo has reasonable enough merit for concern when a leading British paper tags it with a 'try before you buy' because more than one of their staffers experienced undesirable effects of one kind or another.

It's impossible to say how widespread these effects are being felt, but it seems to be enough to be creeping into impressions and reviews more than Nintendo might like.

(It's also not 'the same as film 3D' - which I find unfortunate given Nintendo's posturing about 'uncomfortable' glasses. Glasses aside, cinema 3D has less potential challenges on the comfort POV, which I think is why some people are claiming to have trouble with 3DS where they had none in theatres.)

I know this may seem silly, but can you please show off the 3DS to your cat there and watch if he or she has any kind of reaction? Some people are wondering about this.

Has anyone tried playing in sunlight yet? Always was one of my biggest complaints about handheld consoles but someone just told me that the DSI XL does pretty good..I'm not expecting a perfect image just that I can see something when it's sunny outside.

I *think* the issue is mental rather than actually related to the eyes; I suspect the problem is that your eyes need to focus on the screen, but they will percieve a focal point at a different depth (exactly where would depend on where the 3D slider is), which will confuse the brain. Any eyestrain that results would be due to the brain trying to figure out where it should focus, with conflicting information coming from the eyes, so it may keep adjusting focus without understanding why.

However, I'm fairly certain that this is something your brain can learn with practice. I'm already used to focussing on a point other than the percieved depth point from lots of experience with Magic Eye books, I doubt I'll have any significant issue with the 3DS (famous last words!)

You know it doesn't really? The character appears the same size relative to the card, its just that you have to move further back from a bigger card, so you get larger objects visible on the screen making it appear larger.

It is a very cool effect though.

The thing is, though, that does mean you can scale things to interact with different-sized environmental objects, which isn't completely insignificant.

I'm wondering if I can reasonably have Mario sitting on the sofa between two assistants :)

It also makes for some enormously effective FUD-- 3 for 3!

Got mine this morning with SF4 - I've never experienced 3D before and I think its really great, gives games real depth.

AR is the best thing I've tried so far.

Actually the 3DS should cause less strain then cinema 3D if you actually think about it. 3D causes eye strain by creating a conflict between your focus and convergence reflexes. Naturally, the bigger the screen the bigger that conflict can be and vice versa.

Walkman got its share of press warnings.
Television before it. Wifi more recently.

Real people? Find it awesome.

I have to say Nitendogs keeps impressing me. I'm only 2 days in, but I'm almost certain it's the best game available at launch. It's a perfect showcase of all the features of the 3DS: 3D effect, AR cards, mic and touch screen to give orders, pedometer, street pass, spot pass (even if I don't think nintendo will be releasing any DLC... Maybe some seasonal accessories like a christmas hat or something? That would be nice), etc. My only problem so far is that cat are too expensive to buy :(

That AR shit is crazy to watch on youtube, I can't wait to see this in person, in 3d :).

Interesting to note that everyone in the office thinks its also great - I think Nintendo have a surefire hit on their hands.....

Although the actual hardware design is definately a regressive step back from DSi. The 3DS is not great looking, there are bumps and waves in the main body plastic, it's like as if they havent polished the mould enough. Classic Nintendo design retardation.

I'm seriously thinking about designing a 3DS lite type shell - would cost about 20k usd though.

Nintendogs + Cats does have DLC support according to its Fact Sheet

nintendogs puppies are back in the palm of your hand on the Nintendo 3DS system, with even cuter and more expressive puppies and, for the first time, kittens! The fun from the original nintendogs game returns, with multiple breeds to choose from, accessories for your puppies and kittens to wear, and the ability to let your puppies and kittens train and compete in different challenges and activities.

FEATURES:

More than 20 breeds to choose from
Each puppy and kitten has unique coloring and personality possibilities.

Breed choice depends on game version. These include French Bulldog, Toy Poodle and Golden Retriever.

Puppies and kittens come to life
Puppies and kittens look fluffier, softer and more expressive than ever in 3D.

Adorably life-like puppies and kittens react to your touch and your voice using the built-in camera, touch screen and microphone. The facial-recognition technologies on the Nintendo 3DS even let puppies recognize their owners.

You can take pictures of your puppies and kittens by simply tapping the camera icon on the screen, which you can save to your album and share with your friends.

Share your experience with friends and other players
Exchange your Mii™ characters, puppies and kittens, and presents with other nearby players over a wireless connection (StreetPass™).

Seamlessly hop online and download new game content such as new Mii characters and items such as pet accessories (SpotPass™)*

Play with your puppies and kittens in your world
With the Nintendo 3DS augmented-reality feature, you can watch your puppy play on your dining room table or sit in the palm of your hand.

You will be able to walk with your puppy and have your steps counted by the built-in pedometer on the Nintendo 3DS system when you have the game inserted and in sleep mode.

The Journal feature will keep track of your daily activities in the game. You can view other players you’ve encountered with StreetPass, view your pedometer data, etc.

So new items and Mii characters will be available via Spotpass DLC at the very least.

I didn't know it was already confirmed, but it's good to know :) As I said, I want a Christmas hat for my dog!

So I'm in! Just received my system a few hours ago. What a sexy beast standing on my desk today! Even if the charging cradle seems a little "cheap". The package is surprisingly small but it's nice. There is many things to do with the 3DS even without games (I just bought Nintendogs+cats) like you already know. Oh, and a special mention to play-asia, maybe their price is a little high, but they included many free goods with my order: 3DS/DSi AC adaptor, umbrella, several carry-keys and other things I don't even know what it is, maybe some sort of towel.

So, 2 good reviews already for Ridge Racer. I think the game will justify the 250€ deal I got for console + RR3D on Amazon. It's a shame it doesn't have online but perhaps the Streetpass ghost races can make up for it.
