Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

I really believe if they had shown the Retro game instead of the fireworks, most of you would feel completely different about the conference. I know I would.

I understand trying to show only launch related games, but that's ridiculous not to give us at least one more game to look forward to. We've know about this game for some time now, it's been in production for quite a while, why not show it to us?

Agreed. Retro's game today, and Monolith's game when they announce pricing and Japanese 3rd Party games and the reaction is a 180 degree turn.

Just one big ninty game ground up for Wii-U (graphical showcase game) and alot would be forgiven. I don't get the decision to focus only on launch software at a hype conference, I do get that. The only thing I take exception to are people drawing ridiculous conclusions when there are indicators to the contrary that any person remotely paying attention can catch on to.

Thing is, Nintendo's E3 04 wasn't even that good. It's just remembered fondly due to Zelda. Wasn't that the year they devoted all that time to Pacman Vs.?

E3 06 was probably their best moment, all things considered.
Nah, Pacman was 2003.

2004 was a great show. Birth of "My name is Reggie...", trailers for Prime 2, Star Fox and RE4 right out of the gate, DS reveal, Revolution name-drop by Iwata and then the Zelda trailer. Probably the best show they've ever done.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how this happened.

How do you launch a console with no games?

How do you spend a section of your conference talking about a game that released last year on everyone else's console?

How do you take a year of absolute silence to prepare for a big rereveal after the disappointing initial announcement, and then show the exact same things you showed last year? Especially when studios like Retro and Monolith have surely been working on something for 2 years now.

How do you put absolutely no effort into combatting the rumors that your system is severely underpowered? Just one stage demo of a graphically impressive, Wii U exclusive game. That's it. That's all you needed to do.

The entire thing is just mind-boggling. They had all the cards in their hands. They could've just shown off three good, new announcements and been declared the indisputable winners of E3. I'm sure they have them! I'm sure their studios are working on Wii U games, and they're not all like Nintendoland and Wii Fit U!

You are absolutely correct. I am 100% sure Retro has something they could show that would blow us away. That's all they needed.

And what the fuck was showing off Batman?!? At least show off a game that hasn't released yet.

It was like they were intentionally trying to lose.

The launch window looks pretty decent to me, Pikmin 3, NSMBU, and P-100 with casual stuff is pretty good for a launch really.

The lack of Activision, EA, and 2013 games is pretty baffling though. Did they mention anything at all about EAD Tokyo, Retro, or Monolith Soft?

Yeah. I don't get it either. At this point I'm not disappointed, I'm more in a state of shock as to how awful this E3 was. It's just the most one-note, tired, tepid honeycomb bunch of shit ever.

As I said earlier, somebody should really be fired over this. It was an all-around failure. There are so many things they could have done and just didn't.

It was nonsensical.

Depends. He might have been legitimately surprised. Maybe he expected it to be even worse.

*shrugs* I mean, Last of Us looks good. Kind of like a combination Uncharted and Ico. But I'm not a tremendous fan of the Uncharted titles, so all I can amount at the moment is begrudging respect. Frankly, the only company that I feel came out ahead after its conference was Ubisoft. Those fuckers did it right.

Yeah Ubisoft was amazing but the stuff ND are accomplishing with Last of Us is mind blowing. Knowing that for how cinematic the presentation was that is all based on procedural AI and the situation, and not a scripted encounter blows me away. We have never seen anything like that ever.

I hope this was just a poorly organized conference and not indicative of the wii u itself. But the lack of 3rd party software is troubling. None of the big 3rd party games that have already been announced on other platforms were announced for the wii u. That seems wrong.

They should hire the Ubisoft guys.

No I'm serious.

I respect ND immensely for their technical skills, but I don't generally enjoy their games. So... like I said, I admire their talents - but I don't know that their talents result in things I particularly care about. Which is fine. I'm thrilled they have an audience for the work that they do.

Sure. I know what you mean.

It is just, i was really expecting at least Nintendo to show some High-Profile Game, with graphics like Uncharted or something like that to show off the graphical cababilities of the new Hardware.

Right now I would think the WiiU is just a 360 from the graphical standards.

(Besides I didnt even zoom in. Just used the pic from the official Nintendo-Page)

From this image?

No that was 2003. I'll never forget when Miyamoto showed off Pac Man vs and after just dead silence and he asks "Why aren't they clapping?" It was that year's "Where's the love?" (dumb NOA guy from this year)

edit: It also was the very moment that sparked this infamous image of some very disinterested IGN editors:

Thanks, I stand corrected.

(Love that IGN editor meme btw.)

The biggest problem with the Nintendo conference over the others is that Nintendo are launching new hardware that has the luxury of no new hardware from MS or Sony for at least 10 months and they give us this type of showing !
There should have been a preview reel showing the games we all know are coming running for at least 10-15 minutes. Where was their new online infrastructure ?

I like what I'm seeing.

Nintendoland The Legend of Zelda Battle Quest (Wii Sports Sword Multiplayer Fight Game), , the Nintendoland Luigis Mansion Pac Man Game, Namcos superfun arcade killer Tank Tank Tank, that new Platinum Games game, Nintendoland Chaser Mr.X game, Nintendoland Donkey Kong game all look super multiplayer fun.

Nintendo is promoting Nintendoland big time and it seems like Nintendo wants to digitalize multiplayer party board games.

This is something we won't see from other console publishers. Simple, fast, local, arcade multiplayer fun. Everyone can join in an instant.
Something that's very rare today, just remember that Xbox conference and the movie-like blockbuster games. Games where you can actually PLAY and not watch cutscenes, intros, quick time events.

And Rayman Legends aswell as Super Mario Bros Wii-U (2D-Mario as launch is also showing which way Nintendo is heading) seem to continue Nintendo Console Jump and Run tradition, two very nice launch games.

can you play wii games using only the gamepad as a display?
Someone made a thread about this before the Nintendo conference and people seemed to laugh at the possibility. From everything Shiggy said at the beginning of the conference I would assume YES you absolutely can play the games solely on the gamepad, but I dont think there is any official statement.

Well, I assume this was put together by the high ups at Nintendo.

What is scary to me is the thought that they still do not understand how precarious their position is.

They launched retreads of casual franchises that IMO are highly unlikely to have the sort of impact Wii Sports had.

They announced zero compelling software for the hardcore types (I know Pikmin, but that is still relatively niche).

I just..I don't get it. They are going to sell a $300 dollar machine off NSMB and Nintendo Land?

With the bar set so low (except for Ubisoft <3) it seems like they'd almost have to TRY to fail.

Hoping all the games are hiding in the games conference, I guess.

I knew when Reggie said they had 23 games to show and had only shown 3 - one of them being a port - over half way thru the conference there was no hope. Unfortunately it only got worse with the dance games, U Fit and Nintendo land. They could have showed exclusive content from Ninja Gaiden 3. They could have showed exclusive third party games like Rayman and Project P-100. We didn't even get Madden and Call of Duty - games that should have been no brainers in how to implement the tablet - games that are on Wii. This is far worse than the worst scenero I thought was possible. Wii U is Dreamcast indeed. I honestly don't see how Wii U can survive especially when the next Xbox and Playstation are right around the corner.

Back home. So the conference ended up having no info on the console or the online system, no major third party announcements (besides a few games that have already been released on PCS360) and some first party games that seem to have been underwhelming in terms of graphics, with no mention of what's coming later down the line? What the Hell.

Iwata is a business genius. Miyamoto is a design genius. Reggie is there. What needs to happen is that these three need to check their egos at the door and get some help in planning how these events should go and what they are facing. What are their challenges and who should they be communicating to the most. These are important things to be aware of.

'Cause, at this point, I'm not sure these guys are doing much more than talking to each other.

They can sell it off NSMB. That's a definite.

I honestly don't think Nintendoland will be selling systems because as we saw today it's too difficult to explain without actually playing it.

Wii Sports was easy--you could package everything you needed to show in a 30- to 60-second commercial because the game was so simple. It took a guy 10 minutes to fully explain ONE minigame today, and even then people were confused.

I have a bad feeling this system has a terrible run.

Next-gen needs to come quickly. All 3 failing to utterly impress seems to be a sign that people are getting tired of the same old military shooters, sports games and Mario over and over.

Mario in the WII/DS Gen

2 original 3d Platformers.

2 original 2d platformers.

WiiU/ 3DS Gen

1 original 3D platformer

2 original 2D platformers

Mainline Mario games are actually pretty rare and certainly not oversaturated.

Comparing that to the yearly Call of Duty reskins is disingenuous at best.

Ditto to Zelda or pretty much any big nintendo franchise.

Uncharted has been whored more, Halo has been whored more, pretty much every other big publishers big name games get whored more, but Ninty gets called out for it sooo much more.

Also sales don't indicate fatigue in any of the genres/games you mentioned, and next gen is more likely to feature shinier bald marines than it is new ideas/concepts, especially with dev costs continuing to rise forcing publishers to go with sure things more and more.

I came for the meltdowns. GAF did not disappoint.

Some of this stuff is just golden... people freaking out that Pikmin 3 is 30fps because of the trailer... ummm, does that mean NSMBU is 30fps too?

Logical thinking, some people lack it. Let's see what's said after people hit the show floor.

Oh, and also, I think it's almost a guarantee that NintendoLand is a US pack-in title. I think it's a much better title than Wii Sports for both demoing the system and being closer to a "gamer's game" without going the whole way.

So looking at the Launch Lineup what is Nintendo hoping is pulling people in? Name only? NintendoLand? It's not like they have a Wii-Sports that perfectly demonstrates the advantages of the system. Man they screwed up so bad this conference. I honestly can't believe someone looked at their presser and thought "Yeah this is great!"

I disagree man. Why are people opting for a $300 system over the 3DS sequel on a system they already have?

Pretty much. I am still a bit shocked how they managed to pass up a perfect opportunity after MS and Sony showed pretty much nothing.

Nintendo's conference is a kick in the face of gaming. Not only was everything they showed rehashes of games we already have played, it also looked like shit in the graphics department... I didn't see any reason to buy that gimmick console.

Gabe Newell should come out and say Nintendo should completely scrap the Wii U. That would be hillarious. Actually, the highlight of the show for me was when Reggie said his body was ready.

There are actually some promising pics in the NintendoLand thread that make it look kind of fun (especially the Arcade Donkey Kong map). But it's still better as a pack in title, NOT $50 retail and using it as one of the biggest set pieces of the show today was the marketing equivalent of the ebola virus.

Yep. No pricing info either. A huge disappointment.

It's going to sell due to NSMB, Wii Fit U, and yes, even NintendoLand. But beyond that? It needs a lot more. And frankly, no EA and no Activision? If that's legit, they're in deep shit.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how this happened.

How do you launch a console with no games?

I agree with all of your other points, but I don't think this is a fair statement. As much as I dislike it, NSMB is a huge title to have for launch, as is the casual-oriented stuff Nintendo showed. Pikmin 3 and P-100 are the bones thrown to the hardcore Nintendo fans, and Assassin's Creed III is pretty big, too. The immediate launch is not the problem. The problem, is as you stated, a failure to lay out the plan for the future. Certainly, Nintendo mentioned Together Better or whatever, but it didn't show that at all. How is it better? What software shows this? What have your major first party studios been doing?

Peter Moore just basically confirmed on Spike no EA Sports for launch, but they are working on Wii U games.

Just inexcusable for Nintendo really- even Wii had Madden as a launch game.

Maybe Nintendo's plan to avoid the 3DS launch situation was not to have a ton of games, but just outright admit they've got sweet fuck all instead of pretending otherwise.

They didn't announce anything that wasn't announced last year. All they did was show games they said were in development.

So I can't be the only one who thinks the Wii U's launch actually looks better than the Wii's, right? I'm much more excited about Pikmin and Mario than I was for Excite Truck and Wii Sports (TP was a Gamecube game for me). It's not enough for me to buy it at launch, but still. To me, it's the presentation strategy that was terrible, not the promise of the system.
