Nintendo @ E3 - No Direct, Just Zelda Treehouse Stream

I hope the reason was seeing how Sony is aiming for a longer than usual generation thanks to incremental upgrades with ps4k. That would have forced Nintendo to make a more future proof machine, thus more powerful.

That doesn't sound like Nintendo to me. You know what sounds like Nintendo to me?

"Oh... whoops. Oh shit. Well, we're here now. Damn. How do we get out of this one?"

"[Atrocious idea]"

"Hmmm... makes sense to me. Yes! I'll wager our fans will be over the MOON to finally see every little element of the Wii U version of this game... especially after we've hidden it for so long, and repeatedly claimed it was exclusive to Wii U!"

"[Bullshit about incorporating an 'immersive experience' to cover up continuously awful release schedule]"

"Righto. Someone call the Jim Henson company! And who wants to make the plaster "Link on a horse" statue for the front of the booth or something?"

"Hey guys, sorry I'm late. Did you hear Sony is--"

"Ted! Can you take care of the statue this time?"

"It's Tim..."

"[Utter silence]"

Tim: "...Sure."

"Aces. I can't wait to see the nonstop positive Tweets from gamers and Nintendo fans the world over when we unveil this amazing Wii U experience from top to bottom!"

"What a relief to the fans this will be, sir, after last year's... er... debacle!"

"Haha, well, you can't please everyone, Sarah. I still never got what everyone was complaining about. We had Star Fox, Yoshi... STAR FOX AND YOSHI!"

"Well, there's no way they won't still be frothing at the mouth for this game right up until March 2017, sir!"

"March...? Twenty-sevent--? Oh, right. That's when we told investors we'd launch the NX."

"[Entire room bursts out into uncontrollable laughter, then halts all at once simultaneously in an unearthly manner]"

"Ted! What are you still doing here? Come on buddy, that plaster won't mold into that same well-loved image of Link on a horse on its own!"

Tim: "[Lowers head]"

Are you sure what to keep hope alive?

I'm not personally bothered either way as Zelda is the only announced first party title on Wii U or 3DS I'm currently interested in.

Just pointing out that Treehouse LIVE usually runs for 3 days..and so far they've only announced 1 days coverage.

So we're either only getting a 3rd of the usual live coverage..or there's more to announce. It could go either way.

Any chance that this is all Nintendo's strategy and at E3 they will suddenly be like...

Here's your NX and it's the best console ever!

They're not that smart

They only said Zelda would be the only playable game. Not that it would be the only game?

The only stream is going to be a Zelda playthrough. There's no allotted time to announce anything else so far besides Amiibo news and maybe an eShop spinoff or something.

Good. Nintendo is telling you all to go outside and enjoy the sunshine for once.

I live in PHX, fuck that come June lol.

Anyway, man this is paltry. Really don't get why they aren't showing off the NX, or hell the 3DS titles dropping this year.

Nintendo: you want your Zelda? here is your fucking Zelda ! shoves down your throat

truly it would be slightly less violent

And the Zelda stream is for one day.

Out of 3 days I think.

I'm not saying anything is guaranteed (because lol nintendo) but the wording in that press release is weird.

It boggles my mind that a company as large as Nintendo has nothing to show except Zelda.

E3 isn't the best way to get news out there anymore. With Sony and Microsoft likely blowing their console 1.5x loads, Nintendo might be afraid nx wont compare and might get lost in the hoopla. By holding back they assure they control the message and all media is focused on them.

Sucks for the gaming fans who enjoy the e3 show but on a business standpoint what Nintendo is doing is the smart thing.

If they stream it for 3 days straight they're in a much more desperate situation than we could have ever imagined, or they are the most clueless multibillion-dollar corporate entity on the face of the planet.

Take your pick.

Whenever we jump to conclusions that Nintendo must be doing something well-thought-out and smart, they always prove us wrong.

Nintendo might get the media attention on March but people will be playing on their PS4.5 or Next Xbone instead.

Missing holydays is bad if you are on this industry.

I think this means an exclusive show sooner rather than later, otherwise they're just sending out all of the late 2016 3DS stuff (and the two Wii U things) out to die.

Pokemon is one thing, since The Pokemon Company kind of does its own thing with that, but they've got other content too.

Something's up and this doesn't cotton, but of course with Nintendo's tendency to only unveil one thing at a time, imagination can conjure demons beyond the horizon.

Mark my words. The NX will be unveiled as part of the Zelda presentation. It only makes sense. It's it's only formally announced game (besides DQXI?)

It seems obvious that Nintendo originally planned E3 to be the NX's reveal until they decided to change the release date. All that show floor space and the way they've structured their recent E3s with a big live event, then the Digital Show, then 3 days of Treehouse Live streams would have worked perfectly to reveal and demo a new generation of Nintendo hardware and software. Instead we are getting what looks like a hugely scaled back E3 and have to wait even longer for the NX which will now launch before ever having a presence at E3 which just seems like a missed opportunity.

It is a plausible theory, but I don't see why a 3 month 'delay' would axe their plans. If it was a year delay, it'd make sense to me. But I am at a loss that a 3 month 'delay' would cause them to change their plans so drastically (unless they know it's not going to make March 2017).

Uuuuuuuummmmmmm.....

Looks like Nintendo is holding all their cards for the NX reveal. Hopefully it's not too long after E3 and hopefully it's absolutely amazing. You can't just dip from E3 and not have an NX reveal that's 3x as good as any E3 presentation you've had.

Missing the holidays is bad but the PS4K and Nextbone aren't a threat to the NX. If they release this year (which to my knowledge is uncertain), it will be the discounted OG models that hurt the NX.

Well, considering Nintendo has already confirmed they will fully reveal the NX, it's features, price, and launch titles later this year (most likely fall) it looks like they are literally shifting their plans 3 months back.

Someone should straight up ask Reggie or Kimishima or someone at E3 if this is the case.

Treehouse live would have been amazing to show off all the new NX games, it would have had so much content. I hope they have something similar when they do the official unveil.

lmao I loved this

I just don't understand why they're not showing anything 3DS related.

Or Paper Mario even.

It's likely that Paper Mario has moved to NX and they're not talking about NX for a while. Why mislead people more about what's going on?
They've promised Wii U Zelda for too long and too close to release that they just have to deal with it, but not Paper Mario.

They announced Color Splash in March and now it's May, so two months have passed since they unveiled the game as a Wii U title. This implies that if they shifted the game to NX, the decision was made after the announcement, which is highly unlikely, but this fact alone if true would point that Nintendo made drastic changes very recently to their original schedule. Because if it was always going to appear as an NX game, it wouldn't have been announced for Wii U at all. However, I think that theory is false, they just kept us in the dark.

I was just thinking...

With Nintendo showing nothing but their biggest title, what are they holding back for the NX reveal.

Think about it for a minute, we'll see the difference of WiiU and NX Zelda right away but who cares once you get over any graphical enhancements? It's the same game with a different coat of paint.

If the NX is truly coming out in March and it does have good software at launch they would be able to show it...but they're not. They're keeping things close at chest until they want to show it, yadda yadda yadda.

While I'm disappointed we're only see Zelda at E3, I'm very hopeful and excited for the reveal. More so now!

How much can you show of a SP game on the show floor without spoiling the entire game? E3 is a long time for people to play one vertical slice.

I'm starting to think NX isn't launching till fall 2017. Has Nintendo ever launched a console outside of the holiday season?

1. We hardly know any info on this game. Other than what link looks like.

2. When they first announced the game, they mentioned they wanted to change zelda so that it isn't a single player experience ..so expect some multiplayer involvement.

How is this even going to work. They are not going to spoil a huge portion of a game that doesn't even release for almost a year. Even if they demo a whole dungeon, how many people are going to want to tune in and be spoiled? This is just an odd turn of events. They'd be better off just going crazy promoting Splatoon by hosting live events and tournaments.

They spoiled the entire map back in december 2014. Granted, it probably doesn't look the same anymore, but still.

I feel like I'm the only person hyped to see Zelda. Seems like Zelda is getting crapped on for being the main focus. I mean we know nothing about this game and it's probably their most expensive game ever made. It's also one of their big franchises.

If you're not a Zelda fan then it does suck. We'll see if they show more.

Nothing for 3DS, seriously? How?

I know NOA has to have some games their localizing and the like... That leaked list has proven true thus far and seems legit. The 3DS will Probably will be buried in some obscure round table with no coverage.

At this rate I'm expecting Zelda and a few Amiibo.

E3 is being cast as a giant waste of time for Nintendo. I'd take an Amiibo festival announcement at this point. Skipping it would have cast more curiosity and hype at this point. Advertising Zelda this early on a dead platform that no one will want to invest in at this point (if you haven't already why now?); hustling the wiiu version when everyone will care about the NX version. Why? How this helps to sell wiiu over Christmas baffles me.

I think Nintendo knows they can't really compete with Sony and Microsoft anymore and they don't want to risk revealing the NX only to have Sony and Microsoft completely outshine them with their new upgraded models.

I understand it. Why risk it when you can just have a press conference to announce it?

Only having 1 game to show is a little funny though.

I mean, not competing with Sony and MS on stage is why they started doing Directs in the first place. That and saving money.

This is scaling it back even more

Nintendo has been doing this for the past few years. They divided their conference into smaller events targeting different groups. The Digital Event/Treehouse Live is directed at consumers. They have events for press. And they have a presentation for business partners. Basically it's the boring part of their old conferences where they showed sales charts and business forecasts.

It should come with both a conference and floor presence at Gamescom, which would also come with a huge hands-on experience for consumers still in summer. Most likely not gonna happen though. Look forward to some dire Direct video in the midst of VR/Neo marketing close to launch (i.e. reaching no one but fanboys again).

As much as I would hate for the NX to be revealed in a Direct, I had a thought about that.

I feel like one of the reasons Nintendo loves digital presentations so much that never gets mentioned is it's the only way for Nintendo to convey information worldwide simultaneously. Which is a pretty important thing for a global company, no?

Like, I never have suffer through anything as terrible as those English speakers in Sony's TGS conferences with Nintendo because most Directs are worldwide.

Nintendo couldn't have set the bar lower for this E3. Actually, I'm sort of anxious to see what Zelda: Lost In Time looks like. The first time they showed it like a million of years ago, it was a little hard to believe and probably running on a NX. Then at the Game Awards it looked pretty bad. I'll eat my words if it looks anything like this:

How can you say that you're going to put all the effort into 3DS this year and then show nothing for it at E3?

Either something went terribly wrong at nintendo, or they have something big up their sleeve with the 3DS/NX handheld.
