Ok, now emily confirmed it on twitter, too.

Everyone heard the rumor.

Nope Nope Nope

Dont believe it

I could see "100+ underground areas to explore!" being a marketing bullet point considering the sheer number is impressive and unprecedented in Zelda games.

100+ is just an asinine amount though. A a few dozen mini dungeons, like 3-12 rooms lets say for scale sake makes sense, you can experiment a lot with puzzles and what not in ways larger dungeons wouldn't let you. But 100 is just a crap ton of work and make me fearful that they'll all be single puzzle, with maybe a few 2 or 3 puzzle ones at best. Basically Twilight Princesses Hidden Grottos. I don't want to do that 100+ times. That's not fun.

I dunno, they've been working on this game for... how long, now? Five years? Skyward Sword was about the same length of time and that game, even though it's not open world, was huge for what it is. Yes, you revisit the same areas in the second half but if the world in Zelda Wii U/NX is the main focus they've been working on since they started then I don't think it's impossible to see a variety in the mini-dungeons. I doubt, if this was their plan all along, it'll be like the Tomb Raider reboot's tombs which are pretty much what you described (one puzzle and then the reward after completing said puzzle).

Hidden Grotto-like wouldn't be a good selling point.

Though, I am partially worried in the sense of the rewards for these mini-dungeons if it turns out true. Especially with the amount stated. In Twilight Princess, hidden grottos typically either had just ruppees or a heart piece (or in the HD release, Stamps). And the grottos were, more or less, one room enemy fights with some exceptions here and there (like the famous ice block puzzle cave around the Lake Hylia area in TP). But the rewards were very paltry and repetitive... and that was with probably less than 30 grottos. So, if they're going this route it better not be a situation where like over half of them are ruppee chests and the rest are Heart Pieces, some other key item, and weapons/items.

At the same time, expanding hidden grottos to become mini-dungeons seems like (to me) a logical next step for the series -- especially if they want to encourage exploration like they did in the original Legend of Zelda. You could then have those moments where you bomb a specific wall to get into a dungeon (or well, a mini-dungeon in this case). Or, where you need some other item to open up another mini-dungeon.

You can't procedurally generate a puzzle.

Not a traditional zelda puzzle, no.

Some are going to point out at Pikmin 2 underground caves, but it won't happen in a Zelda game.

I wouldn't want it for the main story content, but for optional content that just gives you rupees/upgrade materials? Why the hell not? Especially for subsequent replays.

Make stuff like the twilight princess/majora maze cave procedurally generated (the path and the enemies inside). Make stuff like a mini cave of ordeals or a wind waker kill room have different enemies in it each time. That kind of stuff has been in past zeldas and would benefit from procedural generation.

Just leave the mainline story content alone and hand-crafted please. (and preferably the trials to get heart pieces, as well)

Oh snap! 4 major dungeons kinda implies there'll be a shorter main story campaign which is generally true in most open world games. Or am I wrong? The only true open world game I've ever played was XCX.

BTW, this isn't an issue for me because I never enjoyed Zelda games purely for the story. I'm just interested in how they'll tackle it along with the rumored VA.

I'll admit, Nintendo's take on Bloodborne's chalice dungeons would be pretty cool. I'd love something like that as long as the main game is full of unique content.

The 100 mini dungeons and 4 big ones is a great idea. I wouldn't be surprised if they went the Super Mario 3D World route, and made each of these mini ones short, but plain fun, each being unique from the other. That game's levels were a joy to play, because they didnt drag on. Each stage was so different in design, I couldn't wait to see what the next offered. This, imo, would be a upgrade from the 8 sprawling dungeons. God knows I Iove Zelda dungeons, but there's been times I've wondered when certain ones would end.

Majora's Mask has 4 main dungeons and is not a short game. Without knowing precisely how the dungeons work for this new game, no one can say if it's short or long.

Without getting too spoilery, please--how much of Oil.in 2 is procedurally generated?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I had to quote for the terrible autocorrect before you could edit it, because autocorrect is a dick, and I think it's funny.

Sorry, carry on.

I'm thinking a lot of mini dungeons like that little ice cave in Twilight Princess. Mini dungeons also doesn't necessarily imply they're all the same size. You could have tiny caves like the secrets in Zelda 1 all the way up to the Cave of Trials.

Who knows though. I can't wait to see.

A Zelda game without puzzles, one can dream

I like puzzles, but Zelda has gotten to a point where it's not about adventure and all about pushing blocks.

I'd like to see a return to more environmental puzzles, like Metroid, challenging combat and dungeons, exploration and discovery, etc.

The thing is Zelda dungeons used to be mazes with rooms that were meaningfully interconnected so you had to think about puzzles in the macroscopic sense. They were like mini metroidvania worlds: how do I reach that room I can see on the other side of the wall, perhaps go one floor above and drop down from somewhere?

Dungeons have become more linear with recent entries, now it feels like you're just going through a long series of rooms that don't have any interplay between them. If it's gonna be like that then for me it doesn't really matter if they chop up the dungeons into several bits. Don't get me wrong, I still think the individual rooms themselves are top quality.

Is Nintendo going to announce at E3 there are only four main dungeons? Otherwise, I'm really skeptical anyone in the know would leak that info.

4 major dungeons sounds like a terrible idea if only for the fact I have a bad feeling they'll make you replay them like the Temple of the Ocean King.

my well-placed ass has relayed to me that there's been a minor misunderstanding and the game will have 100 main dungeons and 4 mini-dungeons

World is huge from what we know of the map screen. Makes me curious how big the 4 dungeons might be. Or just how big all those mini-dungeons might be.
