Nintendo @ E3 - No Direct, Just Zelda Treehouse Stream

As with every gen cycle, I keep telling myself it's all about the games. Yup. That's how I get by. :/
And it's not like that?

I won't get the nx no matter what Nintendo do, but i disagree with this notion. No one would buy the nx because it was the best console in town. Nintendo needs to make a gimmick that people like and want. Arms race or 3rd party games would make the nx just another console, where the opposition is much more consolidated.

In other words, it doesn't matter. Nx needs to have somerhing that distinguish itself, not a better cpu or somerhing like that.

As more and more hype builds around Scorpio and Neo as the months go by

A new Nintendo console launching in March 2017 that is about on par with PS4 or Xbone is going to feel underwhelming as fuuuuuuuuuuck

Among who? Forum dwellers?

I'm not yet convinced that the broader market is going to care that much for PS4 and X1 revisions. Those are specialty products for niche audiences. The people who want and can afford hardware revisions are likely not the same people interested in whatever Nintendo brings to the table. If they are, they probably have enough money to afford multiple consoles.

Nintendo needs strong software, good line-up pacing, and clear brand communication. They need a compelling offer that is holistically worthwhile - not just in terms of specs, but games, services, functionality, and aesthetic. The average consumer doesn't give a damn about the teraflops of X machine vs. Y machine. Most people have not the faintest idea or concern about how these machines work.

Nintendo has a lot of hurdles to clear in order for the NX to be a healthy platform, but the hype of Internet people who know and care about tech wars is not the most significant of said hurdles.

Unlike those systems it will sell based on games not available anywhere else. The visuals will look great, and there won't be any superior version to compare it to.

The iterative console cycle is the best thing that could have happened to Nintendo, whether they partake or not.

It won't make the NX a success, but it is something good that broke their way instead of breaking the other way.

I'm guessing the NX will also be less expensive than the Scorpio or Neo, and we still don't know what the NX's selling point/gimmick is.

This is actually an excellent point. Even if NX is underwhelming by comparison specs wise (which it will be), after this it may not be that long until new hardware beyond the NX.

Yeah it's a lot easier to justify adding a sku for the weaker NX when you still have to support weaker MS/Sony systems too.

EDIT: Not that it'll necessarily happen.

Nintendo's games on a PS4-level box is a lot more exciting for me than a new Xbox console that plays a bunch of multiplats and MS games I don't really care about.

I'm all about Neo though.

I suppose it boils down to who you talk to. I don't disagree with you, they do need to differentiate themselves against the other power houses or imo won't survive. I think my comment may have been misinterpreted or I misrepresented myself, in any case their need to innovate will obviously be a part of their success (or failure for that matter) which generally goes hand in hand with that Nintendo flavoured game development. Peace.

Yep.

I fully expect NX to be a cheap console. $199, even.

All of a sudden the Nintendo NX is not as appealing anymore. They are going to be left behind to catch up against Sony and Microsoft.

Microsoft claims to have the most powerful console with Project Scorpio.
Sony will probably match it or attempt to surpass it.
Nintendo doesn't even have a Nintendo Direct or a Press Conference. It seems they can't compete anymore.

Is Reggie ever coming on? Doesn't feel like it....

Overreaction. We know Sony Neo won't match Xbox Scorpio. Why would Nintendo have a conference if they had no intentions to show NX at E3?

You crazy @199

Though I fully admit I don't expect the NX to be expensive.

That being said I wish they'd just include a fucking BR drive for movies already or a uhd drive (dreaming) in the NX.

They'll do a Direct later on this year most likely. They just chose not to do it at E3 is all. Sony is doing the same thing with their PS4k.

"all of a sudden"?

This has been staring Nintendo in the face for a while now...

5:30 - 6 PM: Nintendo, CliffyB, Lawbreakers and More
We're back at our studio with special guests from Nintendo, Cliff Bleszinski with an exclusive look at Lawbreakers. Xbox's Aaron Greenberg also stops by with a new announcement.
Aaron Greenberg is speaking at time of writing this. Hopefully Reggie (or someone else from Nintendo) will appear soon.

Eastern time.

At this point, they're better off launching something much weaker than them for $150-200. No AAA western third-party support is confirmed already anyway, so what's the point in even matching current-gen? At least if it's cheap enough that 3-4 games can make it an impulse buy it'll sell as a secondary console and might match GameCube sales-wise. Otherwise, it's just another Wii U.

In the end, it's the game library that really counts, not the hardware.

I bet Reggie just talks about currently announced titles coming in the next six months and dodges all questions about anything else.

Reggie: NX? Oh well we have a lot of good content for Wii U like The Legend of Zelda which we're showing today. That's really what we want to talk about.

Geeze, at least let them announce it. We still don't even know what it is. Regardless of whether or not it's getting even "not terrible" third party support, Just Dance isn't literally going to be the only thing.
