Nintendo sells 1.2 million hardware units (400K Wii U, 300K Wii, 275K DS, 250K 3DS)

From the other thread, all previous hardware launches (credit to lunchwithyuzo).

So going on past launches its pretty decent, given the weak message out there from nintendo and lack of killer app out the gate it bodes well for interest in the system.

Cutting the 3DS price probably won't have much of an effect. There's just no "must have" game for it this holiday and kids are too distracted by smartphones and tablets anymore to care.

Wii U launch sales are better than most. PS2 was 500k. Looks like revised Wii sales were between 470k and 500k.
Thanks for some perspective. I also went and looked up 360 launch sales and according to Wikipedia the 360 managed 326,000 North American sales in November (it launched on the 21st). So these numbers look like they're fine.

Not after inflation though. :) But how could they have sold out if they had more on shelves than the Wii did and they still sold less?

Why are people always using inflation as an indicator? Inflation is useful when judging things from an economical point of view, but in the minds of people 250 2006 bucks are still worth as much as 250 2012 bucks. The perception didn't magically change over the last 6 years.

400k Seems really bad considering they were supposedly shipping more than they did Wii.

Have you seen the numbers for console launches on the other page? the hype for wii was massive much more than wii u it was cheaper and the economy wasnt in the toliet i think to come close to wii is pretty good.

So NSMB and 3DS XL barely did anything. It´s again proves that price matters the most.

I don't think so. Even kids these days want an iPad instead of game consoles. And adults don't even want to be seen with handheld game consoles. This is the reason why Vita is bombing so fucking hard compared to the 3DS, see, Sony marketed it at young men unlike Nintendo who market the DS line at kids.

So there's still that kid market for parents who don't want to shell out $500 for a device for their kids, but as soon as tablets go down in price enough, like Nexus 7, we'll see the DS line go the way of the Vita.

I got one . Walked into walmart and picked it up.Glad I picked it up.

While I was there two mothers was asking about backward compatibility , but they didn't like the fact that it only had ONE gamepad.

....there's a serious identity crisis with the 3ds/ds and wii/wiiu

Guessing they're going to beef up the marketing again.

I'm excited for the next Nintendo hardware since it'll probably ditch the DS/Wii names. Gimme something fresh!

That's the problem for me as well, the price of entry is really good but the library of games is very weak, especially if you have no interest in Nintendo's first party (like me).

Oh they did.
Not everyone obviously.

I saw Wii's being sold with copies of NSMB U.

if that really happened the store clerks are real dumbasses then.
Should have told them the game wont work on that system as its obvious those ppl
thought it did.

In the minds of people that did not get a raise in the last six years, sure.

Good numbers for WiiU, about what I expected. Higher numbers than expected for Wii. Way higher numbers than expected for DS and lower than expected numbers for 3DS.

And Sony is nonchalantly not giving a damn. Does anyone think Sony is not letting the vita just slowly die?

For Sony the Vita is not a vital product, it's not (more than?) half of their business as the DS family is for Nintendo. We have seen that people are willing to buy the Vita at 180$ but Sony isn't in a position to cut the price to that point permanently right now, that would add pressure to their financials and Sony has already decided that it's not worth it, they know that dedicated gaming haldhelds are gonna be a niche anyway.

I expect them to start addressing the Vita and its various issues (price etc.) next year.

There's just too much competition this holiday season and whatever steps they take will just be lost in the mix.

Exactly, I said it in the price drop thread but people called me a troll, the 3DS game library is just too lacking for me to consider picking one up even at $120.

Nintendo should put a sticker on Wii U and 3DS that says they play Wii and DS games.

I don't think there's an identity crisis more than they have to say the cheaper systems aren't up-to-date. On one hand, it's great for people that they can have cheaper hardware. On the other hand, Nintendo is getting more sales after they publicly decided to end software support. That feels wrong. ._.

I honestly wonder how much sales would be different had they gone with the name "Super Wii" or something that clearly showed it was a different system.

As long as they keep the clam shell design for the next hand held and that it doesn't scratch the top screen, I'm ok with this.

I wonder will this finally push NOA to release more colors for xl and bundles all around.

For whatever it's worth, the WU's launch line-up seems like one of the better ones I've seen. I mean, sure, NSMBU is no Fantavision, but what is?

Wii U's debut is pretty much as expected: worse than Wii, better than PS3/360. Expect that trend to continue.

Those 3DS numbers make NOA's sudden cut make perfect sense.

Yup! It will be nice to see new names for their next set of hardware! Hope they don't go with the DS/Wii scheme for a third time.

For a week the Wii U numbers don't seem bad at all, I'm more curious to see how it sells over-time as launch numbers aren't really indicative of anything this early. More surprised at how many units Wii sold. They really need to phase out the DS more... beating the 3DS at this point is weird.

It being on sale at $180 makes it a more appealing purchase because of its discounted price from $250.

Like already said, I don't really care about launch sales. Anyone can sell during the holidays, you'd have to try hard not to.

It's the Feb/March/April times that will either kill any momentum or keep things going.

Time to get Pokemon 3DS ready, but this wont be ready before Spring 2014....damn.

Its a brave new world out there, phones and tablets are flooding the market, ones that you can play games on. People are using services such as steam. I think this is much more different than when Wii launched. I am not the biggest Nintendo fan and the number doesnt look bad to me. You can work with that number.

Wii U numbers are good. Not extraordinary, but good. 3DS numbers are god awful and the price drop now makes sense. Nintendo is going to get hammered so hard by their investors because they are going to miss their projected shipments so hard.

Next handheld? I have some pretty bad news for you...

I expect them to start addressing the Vita and its various issues (price etc.) next year.

The only logical thing to do right now is revamp the Vita as a phone. I'm surprised if they're not already working on it.

If Nintendo's going to push their major 3DS releases into 2013, surely they can expect to have soft sales in late 2012. Paper Mario is no substitute for Animal Crossing.

Cutting the 3DS price probably won't have much of an effect. There's just no "must have" game for it this holiday and kids are too distracted by smartphones and tablets anymore to care.

Yep. If Nintendo wanted to sell 3DS hardware this Christmas, they shouldn't have released Black/White 2 on DS.

Frankly, when they've announced the Pokemon sequels, I thought it was a smart idea to squeeze the massive DS userbase one last time, but in the light of things today, I'm quite confused why Nintendo decided for it when this decision left them with virtually no 3DS must-have for the holiday season. They surely plan far enough in advance to have known that...

Though, I guess they massively over-estimated the appeal of yet another NSMB.

I'm excited for the next Nintendo hardware since it'll probably ditch the DS/Wii names. Gimme something fresh!

Not sure about that. Before they ditch the DS name, they'll probably ditch the handheld market altogether.

But, who knows, maybe Nintendo won't be doing hardware anymore 5 years from now anyway. If 3DS continues its sluggish pace in the West and if the Wii U ends up in the same boat, I'm not sure if the company can justify new hardware. Two under-performers coming after their most successful products in history is kind of a very bad thing to happen.

But, of course, it's way too early to even think about this scenario or to try to estimate Wii U's market success. We shouldn't forget that the 3DS already outsold the GameCube's LTD after a year and a half on the market either.

If they want to keep Wii U sales steady throughout the next six months they're going to have to release more software. Software is the key to selling more units so they definitely need to be on top of their game.

I honestly didn't think it'd do so well, good for them. The line between OMG HYPE sold out and casually selling is pretty fine it seems. Reggie has been chatting a bit of shit lately but I'll take his word for it. I'll be interested to see what third parties are saying about sales.

Animal Crossing is the game for me.

300,000 disappointed kids on Christmas morning.

This.

Also, not sure I trust this shizz... We'll see. By every indication, I keep hearing that the 3DS is far outselling the DS, but who knows for sure. Still, there really isn't anything "must have" this season for the 3DS, so I'm wouldn't be that surprised.

Wii sold 600k in the first 8 days in NA. So this looks to be less. Interesting.

Well, these are only US figures for now, apparently.

Also, handheld market is dead in America. Never again will we see DS/GBA sales numbers.

You can't draw that conclusion from one Amazon.com sale.
