Nintendo sells 1.2 million hardware units (400K Wii U, 300K Wii, 275K DS, 250K 3DS)

Those DS numbers, super impressive that it is still chugging along like that. Wii U launch numbers seem uninspiring, but not enough so to call it a flop? It'll be interesting to see how the system fares up until Christmas, is there any chance better stock replenishments could help the WiiU sell strong over the Holidays? Or is it likely to dull any sort of frenzy around the system, sending the message that it's just not that desirable a product?

Wii U launch sales are better than most. PS2 was 500k. Looks like revised Wii sales were between 470k and 500k.

I just worked out the low numbers and higher wii numbers.

Gonna be a lot of pissed off kids on Christmas day, all excited. WiiU, WiiU, WiiU, WiiU, ohhhh Wii. You got me that last year wahhhhhhhhhhh wahhhhhhhhhh :(

Wait so parents are going to buy their kids a Wii if they already have one? Even for uninformed consumers that seems pretty dumb haha

Where does that 50% drop for 3DS come from?

Last year Nintendo didn't provide figures for 3DS.

NPD numbers, I assume. The 3DS sold 795k last November according to NPD, considering that most of Novembers sales happen on and after Black Friday, that indicates a pretty heavy decline. November sales of about 350k to 400k don't seem unlikely.

So, yeah, while the 3DS is a beast in Japan, it still struggley very much in the US (and I think in Europe too). Not sure what Nintendo plans to do against it, everything they've done so far to "save" the 3DS' western sales seems a little half-hearted.

That's because the DS is actually at a price where parents are cool handing them off to their kids to possibly break.

Not to forget that Nintendo released their most important handheld game of the season on the DS and not on the 3DS. Nintendo is not giving parents a lot of reasons to pick up a 3DS right now...

I still haven't seen a single ad on television.

Can't speak for the US, but it's similar here in Australia. I can understand why the Wii exploded, but the Wii U is just kinda...there. There's no killer app and marketing has been poo. 400k sounds about right.

Jan-Feb-March will be telling. Isn't that when PS3 started to tank after launch?

Yeah this. There's always launch demand. Always. It's the new year drop-off that will show how receptive the market is to new hardware.

Given the poor software offerings, I expect a massive drop, unless the whole off screen TV thing suddenly catches on.

At this point every Wii / DS unit sold is a very healthy profit for Nintendo, so I assume they can't be complaining too much about the high Wii / DS sales, even if it's bad for the 8th gen ecosystem.

We have said that we’ll have more Wii U units on store shelves in week one than we did for Wii in 2006. (...) Having said that, though, we’re guessing there could be shortages. It won’t be there every day. Shipments coming in each week could sell very quickly.
Yet they apparently sold less than the Wii did in its first week. So has it really sold out?

So NSMB and 3DS XL barely did anything. It´s again proves that price matters the most.

Pokemon > NSMB2

oh finally some numbers. Man I would hate to be one of the 300k kids that will be getting a Wii for the holiday instead of the Wii U.

That is a lot of Wiis and DSes

3DS price drop coming after this is good

3DS sales speak for themselves. Could be worse, but still pretty bad.

Wii U... uh, unless supply was significantly lower than Wii's at launch, that doesn't look good.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo shipped 500k Wii U's (correct me if I'm wrong) and it sold 400k Wii U's, and it's $50-100 more expansive then the Wii, It's not that bad.

So I guess the question is:

Pick up a Wii-U now, and get in on the inevitable ambassador program when they cut the price in a couple months.

Or.. wait for the price cut?

Wii U is at cheapest 50 dollars more expensive.

It's not bad for Wii U at all. Wii is a low cost alternative for people that won't drop 300 dollars for a new console.

Why is this concept so alien to you guys? It's been happening since the NES.

How many of those 300k Wii sold are from people expecting to buy the Wii U?

Same question for the 3DS and DS. This is embarrassing.

400k seems okay but word is there were several supply constraints. I think the Wii sold around 700-800k in its first weekend.

According to NPD Wii sold short of 500k units in November 2006. This is actually 100k less than the number Nintendo stated.

Wii doing surprisingly well, the WiiU's launch numbers don't look very hot in comparison (new console so expected the difference to be much bigger).

Nice, with an official source, the "Nintendo is doomed" articles will begin to be posted now.
Not too bad and not incredible neither.

....there's a serious identity crisis with the 3ds/ds and wii/wiiu

Guessing they're going to beef up the marketing again.

From the other thread, all previous hardware launches (credit to lunchwithyuzo).

Thanks for this. I think this is what many of us have been looking for so we can do side-by-side comparisons.

My thoughts after looking at the numbers:

3DS - Much lower than expected.
DS - Exactly what I expected.
Wii - Much higher than I expected.
Wii U - Exactly what I expected.

It's a good debut for the Wii U although 400k units at launch during Black Friday week are pretty much granted.
3DS did poorly, less than Wii and DS. I don't know if cutting the price again is the right thing. They should have tried to have a good holiday lineup in first place but they also have to deal with the fact that price drops or not the western maket for dedicated gaming handheld is dying, if they think that they can achieve the same success of previous platforms with the 3DS in the west they're delusional.

3DS cost only $30 bucks more and has full BC with DS and still DS sells more. Really damn puzzling. Are people still confusing these two devices?

400,000 bad? I really dont think its bad at all.

I think nintendo still have a lot to do on the marketing side of things and can push a lot harder so 400,000 in week 1 really isnt a disaster.

Good numbers for WiiU, about what I expected. Higher numbers than expected for Wii. Way higher numbers than expected for DS and lower than expected numbers for 3DS.

....and here's why they're price cutting. The dedicated handheld market in NA is under serious pressure.

And Sony is nonchalantly not giving a damn. Does anyone think Sony is not letting the vita just slowly die?

If this doesn't show how poorly Nintendo phases out their previous consoles, I don't know what does.
