Nintendo Switch Launch Thread: Now you're playing with power; HYBRID POWER!

Don't worry about it, there is usually a defense force regardless of how real issues might be.

Happens every console launch.

At the same time, complaining about things like light software lineup, missing features, and isolated incidents of hardware issues during a console launch is a bit like yelling at the clouds for raining.

If you haven't paid attention since 1996 or so, this tends to be the way console launches go. Expect that or wait it out until things improve.

I personally love the early adopter period where things are a little awkward but also exciting and new. And it's interesting to think of the possibilities for the future.

Did I get disappointed with knack and those awful launch slippery analog nubs? Did I enjoy having to send in my 360 for repairs? Did I get annoyed that blue bottom discs wouldnt read? Did I flip my console upside down like it was no big deal? Yes, I did all of those things.

Ok, here's a dumb question. How can I tell if the joycons when attached to the Charging Grip is actually charging? I don't see any light indicators at all. I'm plugging the cable that came with the grip into the rear USB port next to the HDMI and power cable in the back of the dock. Is it charging?

No, I hope this is it.

No more segragation in the Nintendo software output (bar mobile games like Super Mario Run I guess).

Yeah this is what I meant to say haha. I like the idea of all of Nintendo's stuff being one one hybrid system like this

probably not but its earn a little & sell loads or earn slightly more and sell less.

If they're going to take such a loss they may as well just keep that stuff in there. Turning this into just a portable device really takes away part of what makes this thing so potentially great.

might show under controller setting, it usually shows battery charge in there

I just tried a USB ethernet adapter that didn't work on the Wii U, and it works on the Switch. Zelda was taking forever to download, it's much faster now. If you have one, try it.

Haven't owned a nintendo system since the Wii but I was reading through this thread and just wanted to say that I am legitimately shocked that Nintendo still uses friend codes. It's hard to imagine a less user-friendly system. How have they not figured out usernames by now? I mean, I know it's Nintendo, but yeesh.

Friend codes seems like a simple quick solution to make a friends list exist at launch. It is an existing system that doesn't require much development, so it's good enough until the full fall update with the network services.

That's why I think it's there.

not to people who would never dock it, and there is already a game confirmed to be portable mode only as it required touchscreen input.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

I'm doing practically no damage to this guy, and I BURN through my weapons and shields. Should I just come back later? I went exploring, ended up here, and feel I'm in way over my head. But I want to just make sure I'm not an idiot.

So how are you guys powering this down for those that have it docked? Are you generally just doing sleep or fully powering it off? If keeping it docked is there a downside to using sleep mode? I know if you are going portable then power off will save on battery overall.

I'm loving the system so far. So much potential, and I love the transition to portable and how seamless it is. I feel like despite some of the issues and complaints they have really nailed it with this system. I really hope this concept sticks, and like others have said, I'd prefer them not to come out with a 3DS successor, but I guess that will probably depend how we'll Switch does in the long run. For my money I love, it feels like that Nintendo magic that only Nintendo can do.

Man, why is the screen SO faded? Was it too much to expect a slightly higher quality screen with decent lighting, closer to what you see on most smartphones? The Vita screen was miles ahead of this, no? I kind of feel like I'm looking at the Wii U tablet screen again.

I have the brightness turned all the way down, and it still looks unsaturated, overlit and faded. I'm a sucker for deeper, richer colors and blacks and have none of that here.

snipperclips demo is fun.

shoulder buttons are small as heck on the joycons.

the way my current setup is.....doesn't lend itself well to the short cables on the HDMI and AC adapter that this comes with. So i don't really have an ideal place to put the dock rn

Where are demos available? Couldn't find any on the eShop

You need to be moderately strong first.

I need some Nintendo friends!

I can't believe I'm using friend codes in 2017.

Before it came in today, I had started doubting if it would be any good, but after having hands on time with it, I completely have faith in the Switch. It's amazing with how much power can be in this little tablet.

I want to leave my charger plugged in the dock so is there another way to charge so I can bring something with me if I take this to work or something? I might be buying the pro controller tomorrow and I thought someone said something about charging the tablet with that cord but wouldn't u need some kind of adapter?

So I updated the system without the joycons attached, I saw I need to reboot in dock mode to have the joycons firmware updated but is there anything special I need to reboot or do I simply turn it off then on?

Got to spend a lot of time with the Switch tonight, some impressions.

-Screen quality is actually decent. I am a major screen snob, I own an iPad Air 2, iPhone 7 Plus, 5k iMac, etc. The Switch doesn't compare to those, but it gets the job done.

-System is as bare-bones as could be. The OS, the lack of menu music anywhere, the eShop, everything. There's nothing to do, look at, or use the Switch for besides playing Zelda. The system really needs Netflix, YouTube, Virtual Console, MORE GAMES, more demos, more everything. I need more reasons to want to grab the device after I finished Zelda or for something between play sessions.

-The Joy-Cons look cool, especially the neon, but they are crazy small. Very uncomfortable to hold, the buttons are too close together and I have normal/thin hands. Using them separately and in the dog both don't feel good.

-The Screen gets nice and bright, big complaint i had with my 3DS XL.

-The Dock is terrible, low quality, and potentially dangerous for the system. Definitely slide the Switch in and out CAREFULLY.

-I don't like sliding the Joy-Cons around when changing control styles.. feels like I'm always about to break something or have one go flying. I wouldn't trust anyone else to do this on my unit but myself.

-Zelda looks sharper on the Switch for some reason, but man, it belongs on the big screen.

-One of my friend's left Joy-Con did drop the signal consistently. She wanted to exchange her system, but Target was sold out and while we were there I personally heard 3 calls asking if there were any systems left.

-Another friend's Joy-Con functioned perfectly. I took them as far as I could away from the system (about 14 feet) while wearing an Apple Watch and having my phone in my pocket AND putting the controllers behind my back. Still worked. I guess it's very poor QA, definitely return yours if it's not working right.

I think Nintendo can really put the Wii U behind them with this hardware, but they CAN NOT have anymore droughts like the did with the Wii U EVER AGAIN. This holiday season and year 2 are where they really need to bring it. They need to get those media features on the device, and get the steady stream of games flowing. If they fail to do both of those things they are in trouble.

I really don't believe the majority of people will buy a gimped tablet just for gaming, even if there's a BotW quality game or two out each year... it's not enough. I hope that Nintendo truly has consolidated their console and handheld development and just unloads games on the Switch. It is the only way to do this right.

Bizarre.... finally got my Switch at around 7 tonight (from Amazon) and my unit only came with one Wrist Strap. I noticed there weren't any seals on the package so I suppose it's possible someone could've taken it out. If not, how the fuck could this have passed quality control? Never heard of something like this either.

Why would the build the dock with hard plastic guides instead of rubber stoppers? The screen scratching makes a lot of sense now.

Terrible design there.

It's a real kick in the teeth not having Miiverse, or at least a replacement. I don't use Twitter or FB, and I liked the community they built up, and I've had a lot of Zelda moments I would've put up on Miiverse by now...

Sooooo after waiting all day, I finally got my package from Amazon. Except there was no copy of Zelda to be found.. I am now talking to customer service and waiting for Zelda to download off of the eShop.

Have they said they are not doing Miiverse?

I was hoping the absense meant they are building a new version of it.

People saying Zelda looks better on their Switch screen than on their TVs, I just don't understand. My TV blows the Switch's screen away. I can't stand how faded and bright it is. I'm realizing it's not that bad for the home menu and the Snipperclips demo, but in Zelda, it's super washed out. Game looks vivid and beautiful on my Samsung 65" 4K, even it's just uprezed from 900p.

Snipperclips demo was an interesting diversion but I got bored fast. This system needs some more games quick.

I agree. Especially now with how quick the system is it's an instant capture and upload. Stupid of them to scrap it.

The performance on the portable is a constant 30fps, while docked it's shitty unstable and keeps dropping to 20fps.

Reading your comments here and comparing to what I've heard everyone else say about the Switch screen, I have to wonder if there isn't something wrong with yours.

My left Joy-Con is giving me problems even when I'm right up on the unit. Question: Is anyone's ZL shoulder button audibly clickier than the rest of the shoulder buttons (either left or right Joy-Con)?

I really like the official case. Its cheap in price, it fits like a glove with a small amount of space so it doesn't slide around, it has a built in stand thats better than the one on the Switch and it looks sleek. I mean its not Waterfield case but its not priced like that either, its perfect for just throwing in a bag or suitcase.

I had a brain cramp followed by a bit of a freak-out moment tonight. I had taken the Joy-Cons off of the system and was putting on the strap attachments when I accidentally put one on upside down. It took a good five minutes of firm but careful pulling to get it to come off. But then after we were done playing, I went to take them off and was taken aback at how difficult they seemed to be to get off; I was pushing the release button on the Joy-Con and no the locks weren't engaged.

Are mine just finicky? Anyone else had any issues with them?

Aside from that, I'm very happy with the system in general. Very sleek, feels solid and weighty, the Joy-Con have a good feel, nice responsive buttons.

I'm only talking IQ. It definitely does run better on the handheld, though the framedrops are only occasional on docked.

I still haven't seen any good pics of it. Do you have any?

I honestly think I'm a jackass and just being too picky and elitist about it. I think all 3DS screens look like hot Fucking garbage and most people say they're acceptable. Anything less than the clarity and vividness of an iPhone screen annoys me. It's a new baseline standard as far as I'm concerned.

It really is acceptable outside of Zelda. The home menu and eshop and Snipperclips look fine. It's just too damned bright and washed out for Zelda. It's annoying.
