No Mans Sky | PC Performance Thread

Decided to get a refund based on impressions. I really want to try this game out at some point but will wait for more updates and a drop in price. Can't really justify almost 70 dollars CAD at this point.

Plus, I have RTTP with Witcher 3 to keep me busy for the summer.

No crashes for me. Some hiccups now and then when entering and exiting the ship, or any kind of transition, really. Otherwise, it's butter-smooth, around 80-110fps at 1440p w/Gsync. Everything maxxed except no AA. I prefer sharp and slightly jaggy (I barely notice it, TBH) to blurry.

Just my experience but...at work I read what settings to use to make it run smoother. Ten minutes ago I downloaded the game and started it up. It was hitching a lot and the frame rate was poor. I changed it to the following settings and it is running much better immediately:

In-game settings:
Window Mode: Fullscreen
Monitor: Primary
Resolution: 1920x1080
V-Sync: Off
Anti Aliasing: SSSA x 4
FoV (both): 90
Anisotropic Filtering: 16
Texture Detail: High
Shadow Detail: Medium
Generation Detail: High
Reflection Quality: Low
Max FPS: Max

My specs are:
CPU: i7 4790k
Memory: 16GB
GPU: GTX 980
Windows 10 64-bit

No issues here. i5 660k/MSI 1080 gaming X/32gb ram. Once I turned off v-sync, put it in borderless window, turned off the FR limiter, and cranked the settings up it ran like a dream. Every now and then it would get a little janky but on 1440p I'm getting a solid 135FPS. In space it goes down to about 110, which is fine.

Does performance still hold during harsh weather and lush planets with the foliage blowing and such?

Well, it's running.

Is this game just ignoring G-sync for anyone else?

I only played for a few minutes earlier but it was working for me I think

Interestingly there's an option for Gsync in \No Man's Sky\Binaries\SETTINGS\TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML

You could check if that's set to true I guess?

Anyone else getting screen tearing?

Running an R9 290, tried with vsync on and off but doesn't make a difference.

My wife is getting screen tearing with her 770 SC with v-sync off but not on. The problem is if you have v-sync on you get a ton of issues. If you turn it off, you're more prone to tearing. It's lose/lose.

My issue isn't so much the base framerate as it is the insane freeze ups happening when I go to land on a planet. When I go down to atmosphere level it can lock up entirely and then kick back in.
Same thing happens when it tries to load the environment around me and I turn too fast for it. Literally any time it has to load something in, it freezes up on me quite a bit and then eases out

Not sure on harsh weather. The RNG Gods shined upon me and my home planet is ridiculously awesome. It's very lush and has a ton of foliage.

I do wanna try it on 4K later tonight and I'll report back as to how it holds up. That'll be the real test.

Why do I want to get home from work and discover that this game runs terribly on my system? Lol. I'll be more disappointed if it runs perfectly at this point! Hahahaha

But honestly, hopefully it runs fine and I enjoy the game.

No issues aside from the occasional stutter when saving the game or loading things like planets for the first time. No regular stutter in gameplay like some others are experiencing. Took a bit of tweaking and 2 restarts to get it like this, though (it was stuttering at first).

GOG version
i7 6700k
980ti
16GB
Borderless (w/ G-sync), all maxed out (except Shadows>High). I also set max pre-rendered frames in the Nvidia CP to 4 but I don't know if that helped with the stuttering.

Unlocked, the game runs at 110-150 FPS at 1080p. I locked it down to 90 with RTSS.

Biggest issue is that the entire game looks like a vaseline-covered turd (no matter which AA setting I try out).

Gonna try out that increased FOV tweak.

Does anybody know how to lower the mouse sensitity ? It doesn't work, at zero or 100 it's the same for me. I tried changing it in the config file directly and it still doesn't work.

I figured out that you need to restart the game for it to take effect but if you changed it in the config and it still didn't change, then idk. When I change it in-game and then restart, it does take effect for me, though. I was purposefully messing with it to match my sensitivity in Overwatch.

Man, the performance is really killing me right now. I powered through the tutorial, but the almost constant stuttering is unbearable. And the performance is pretty much the same on max and lowest (as in all low/off and 640x480). This with all of the tips from the OP.

My rig:
FX-8350 @4.0
R9 380X 4GB
16GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 64bit

Other than that, it's kinda hard to get a good impression on certain things (flight anywhere in general is almost unplayable), there's things I love, things that feel pretty bad, but right now I'm really just bummed out with the performance.

The common theme I'm seeing with a lot of people having issues is Windows 7 and AMD. I'm not saying everyone is having those issues because hyperbole, but a lot of my friends who are complaining about problems are AMD people.

Sweet. I don't know if I want to take the gamble just yet that my 1080 will handle it as well but I asked because the weather and lush environments are what I really want to wow me on top of everything else and I didn't want performance issues to detract from my experience.

My 1080 can handle Dirt Rally on 4k at a solid 50 so I'm willing to chance it. Racing games are pretty rough on video cards due to the amount of detail. This will be a good test for it I think.

Wow, reading the thread it seems I won the lottery?

All maxed at 1440p it never goes below 60 (980ti).

Most of the time it's in the 80+ region (smaller scale environments easily go over 100), when there's a lot of objects it drops to 60.

Thank God for gsync?

It's gorgeous, by the way.

Some settings for those with the GOG version.

SMAA x4 is a much better experience. Borderless also greatly improves it. Shadows to LOW too (I couldnt really notice too much of a difference) everything else on high. 16x AF. Max FPS.

Over 60fps when in space flying and on foot, boosting can cause some slight dips and breaking a planets atmosphere can go to low 50s, but all in all its mostly 60. Played 3 hours of it now at 1080p.

GTX 970
i5-6600k
8GB RAM.

G sync has nothing to do with it. The stutters are also very planet dependant it seems, so you're not out of the woods yet unfortunately.

Steam or GOG version?

I've had 0 problems with the game, put in 4 hours so far. Running @ 1440p Max settings with a Gsync monitor, haven't dropped below 60-70fps yet. Specs are 980Ti and i7 6700K on Windows 10. My Nvidia drivers are NOT up to date, I'm on 364.51

Happy to report the game is running flawless to me so far in about 1-2 hours of play. Framerate never goes lower than 60 and rovers around 60-80. Max settings. VSYNC OFF, MAX FPS and triple buffering. NVIDIA drivers not up to date.

i5 4460

I7 6700K @4.8ghz, 32GB RAM, GtX 1080

Framerate's a solid 90+ at 1440p, but the stuttering is almost intolerable. Every time I climb a hill or explore somewhere new, it basically microstutters to hell and back and sometimes outright even freezes for 1-2 seconds. It's playable, so I won't refund it yet [I'm having fun] but it's DEFINITELY the worst-optimized PC game I've played this year besides maybe Skyforge.

Anyone figured out what the closest settings to the PS4 version are?

I'm concidering picking this game up tomorrow just to check how it runs, and refunding it if it isn't nicely playable on my machine.

Also, I'm on Windows 8.1 and disabled Steam overlay. Don't know if that made any difference.

I'm actually really surprised the game is running so well to me because in most performance threads I feel people with specs identical to mine are always running the game better.

I'm on vacation but decided to refund my Steam preorder. I was leaning that way anyway after reviews as all the survival stuff and inventory management isn't my cup of tea. With it having a lot of performance issues on PC I just ordered the PS4 version since its $48 with prime and I can sell it if I bore if it after a few hours.

This excites me, mainly cause my specs are similar to yours.

A lot of people are saying disable steam overlay seems to help somewhat.

Man....

I can not get used to the controls while flying the ship. I really dislike that A and D are bound to roll the ship, please for the love of god let me bind A and D to turn the ship and roll to the mouse. PLEASE

So far the games runs pretty well outside of short stutters every time something major happens. Other than that I like the visuals and open design but the gameplay is a tad boring already after the third planet I've visited.

The common theme I'm seeing with a lot of people having issues is Windows 7 and AMD. I'm not saying everyone is having those issues because hyperbole, but a lot of my friends who are complaining about problems are AMD people.

I wouldn't be surprised if that is indeed the case, since AMD's had issues with OpenGL performance, and AMD CPUs aren't as powerful in per-core performance, but one would hope that the game would at least run smoothly with the lowest settings on an FX-8350, so I'm hoping things will get better, will see.

Updated Nvidia drivers before I started, forced V-Sync etc. through the control panel, downloaded and launched. Ran poorly at first, changed settings to windowed borderless and turned V-Sync off in the menu, restarted, generated new planet :( , ran tolerably, hard freeze after five minutes (had to restart computer).

Ah well, on to other things for now. I'll give it a week before I submit for a refund.

Just want to add, alt tabbing works in the gog version as well..

wat....

My two biggest gripes right now are alt+tab (you can cntrl+shift+escage for now) and the god awful ship controls.

Yeah flight controls on KBM are horrible. Can you switch the the controller on the fly?

I looked int the settings folder, but there is no file to let you manually configure those settings. I might actually switch to my controller during flight, because I just cant use the KB+M this way.

This is looking to be another PC "Master Race" FAIL

Another game that's main focus was on the console version and then ported to PC.

This is happening more and more to the point where I stopped caring about PC Gaming and my Gaming PC just collects dust. It's not worth the time and headache anymore. Especially for a guy like me who is married, has a career, and having a kiddo in the future. The sad thing is, I make more money now than ever and can afford a TRI-SLI 1080 setup if I wish. :(
Lol this is sad, just because this game is busted for you. (For me it works great) I've played hundreds of games on my PC in the past few years and I can count the issues I've had on one hand. And my experiences have been way more varied then what's on console. It's fine to like consoles more if that's your thing, but I bet you don't give it all up when a game runs badly like AC Unity or something.

Something is weird. My setup:

i7 4790k
980ti (oc'ed to 1500MHz)
16gb ram
4k-Gsync Monitor

Maxed out game looks nice enough, would definitely consider visuals ok, nothing mind blowing, would definitely play it, but I'm getting so many stutters and frame drops that not even g-sync can save it.

Mostly stays in the 40-58 fps, but anytime I open a menu, or get in the ship, the game goes to a crawl.

Will holdoff getting a refund for a few days to see if they release a patch.
