Now that Lisa Su's video dropped today, I can share what I know about next gen "Xbox" since last June.

Can i go on my ps5 right now and download windows or steam? Can i take the parts out of my ps5 right now and replace them with better ones such as a better cpu, better gpu, more ram etc? Are games on my ps5 all compatible with a mouse and keyboard and is the playstation O.S built with a keyboard and mouse in mind?

Can i download roms onto my ps5 that play nes, snes, n64, sega genesis etc games on it? Does every ps5 game have mods that i can download onto them? Can i go onto my ps5 right now and run windows on it? Can i go onto my ps5 right now customize the entire OS to my liking? Does the ps5 have an internet browser that i can use? Get my point.

Oh so it's a Sony post. I get your point.

You know there's a shit-ton of features like a PC, more than the few you make e.g. Nintendo and XBox both allow emulation and BC for example. Third party accessories exist in abundance too. Same goes for internet browsers, even the PS5 has one, you just have to use a hidden link.

Bro the Switch 2 sold as many units in 3 days as the Steam Deck has sold in it's 3 years life time lmao

No one gives the tiniest shit about PC handhelds outside of a small niche of PC gamers
calling it a "hit" was probably a stretch, I meant more that it was successful for what it is

For a Linux-based handheld with no mainstream marketing or retail push, 3–4 million units isn't bad at all. Not every product has to be Switch-level to be considered a win in its lane

The fact that any PC handhelds are selling at all and that big brands keep entering the space, means there's clearly some demand. It's not mainstream, sure, but it's not nothing either

I mean it's not a pro sony post per say but i used them as an example. The switch 2 isn't anything like a PC either and almost everything i said about the ps5 in my post can be said about the switch 2 as well. The switch 2 and ps5 are vastly different from a PC in terms of the complete customization that a PC offers you.

Alright, guess I was off, clearly handhelds aren't taking over the world.

Still funny though that all these big brands are jumping in if no one actually wants them.
They're doing it out of a mixture of desperation, greed and stupidity. No different than any fad in the past. Only this time, there's way less excuse. We've exhausted most imaginable fads over the last 3 gens and know they don't work; more egregiously though, this one isn't even particularly successful or new! Motion controls were both. VR was at least the latter. But PlayStation should know better than to think a handheld is the new key to the city having made the PSP and Vita.

They look at Nintendo, misidentify the Switch as a dedicated handheld and off to the races. Leadership is too dumb to recognize when they're getting worked by the corporate climbers selling them on nonsense.

Are you sure about that? I dont think PS is looking at their handheld as a dedicated hardware but more like the portal

All of that is due to artificial and arbitrary locks in the SOFTWARE, not the hardware architecture.

It's a closed ecosystem which is what a console is and always has been. A closed and contained ecosystem that is easy to use and easy to setup with its own proprietary software and OS. That's what consoles have been since their introduction into the gaming space.

It isn't fundamentally different from an x86 arch machine as consoles were in the past.

People here thinking Xbox brand can compete with real pcs and other handhelds 😂
It's about the functionality. A streamline gaming os for Xbox and PC games. Will most likely be in a smaller form factor than most pcs and will primarily be used with a controller. Everything will be standardized but you will still have the convenience of specific interface and peripherals that are more associated with a console. It's a console box with a bit more utility and still will maintain a console like experience than what is available presently with a pc hooked up to a tv natively. That's very intriguing. It's not about being the most powerful device ever but giving more options that cater to gaming specifically. That sounds pretty interesting to me. 🤷

Xbox. He was questioning how they would sell the chip without profit then have other stores thus possibly making no loss-leading profit either. He was asking what's in it for MS.
Microsoft is a software company. I think they know how to make money, since they have a multi-trillion-dollar worth.

Xbox hadn't been making profit for a long time. MS' money comes from other parts of the company. but yes MS is a software company which is why DeltaPolarbear was asking why they would be making hardware and giving it away for nothing to OEMs.

They'll get money from OS license, money from GPU subbers, and money from the Xbox store which will be the default store integrated into the OS.

But it isn't today. It's also on pc. If MS allows for steam as an option on their device, that will be what the users choose to use.
Why do you think this makes any difference? It is already what the vast majority of Windows gamers use afaik. On GeForce Now I can play almost my entire Steam library as well as everything on Game Pass. This ship has already sailed.

They haven't? That's news to me, as everywhere else reported otherwise.

  • Record Q3 revenue: Xbox generated $5.721 billion in total revenue during the January-March 2025 period (Q3 FY25), marking a record-breaking third quarter for the division.
  • Gaming revenue growth: Overall gaming revenue increased by 5% year-over-year.
  • Content and services leading the charge: This revenue growth was primarily driven by an 8% year-over-year increase in Xbox content and services, including Xbox Game Pass, Call of Duty, and Minecraft.

Revenue isn't profit, but it is wrong to just assume that Xbox is some albatross that is draining money. If that were the case, they would just get rid of it. It is Microsoft, they don't have to care about some losing side-venture. The fact that they are still here with Xbox means it is worth it to them in some way.

Revenue and profit are not the same thing. it's a well known fact that xbox was operating at a loss for many many years up until Kinect. This may not be the case now.

Is the APU locked to the OS? If not, the OS license is the only guaranteed money. If so, uh oh. We (consumers) have a bigger problem.

As much as I would love that to be the case, all evidence points it to being dedicated. We wouldn't be hearing leaks 3-4 years before the PS6 release if it wasn't.

It's a genuine nightmare scenario for my tastes. There's still time to outright cancel it, but I don't have confidence that's what they're going to do.

Not only that. They are most likely bleeding money.

Let this sink in:

Xbox´s revenue is around 20 B
They have a workforce of around 20K.

PlayStation´s revenue is around 30B
PlayStation´s workforce is around 12K

...Red flag already. But when you consider that roughly 66% of PlayStation's revenue comes from third‑party sales and MTXs, with a profit margin of about 9%, we can extrapolate that to Xbox, which is dealing with consoles sold at a loss, declining hardware sales, Game Pass cannibalizing third‑party sales and MTX, and the fact that Xbox has to pay publishers to put their games on Game Pass (even before factoring in the ABK acquisition); it's clear the division is struggling mightily to make a profit.

Because they need to focus on sales for their own store. By shifting to an open platform, they lose any real sway to funnel people into their own store. No one is going buy stuff from them when steam is also on their system.

Everything about this sounds like a win for those with an extensive Xbox library. Is there any reason why this couldn't be sold as a standalone board you can slot into your existing desktop? They should sell a Xbox external disc drive as well.

But what do you mean by "dedicated"?

I mean, I don't think the PS handheld is going to be another PSP/Vita or even PSVR (requiring dedicated software). It seems it will be closer to the Portal. But with the capabilities to run games natively.

Why would the consumers have a bigger problem when this all going fail anyways. 😉
I am not so sure it fails and it is a big problem if what you said is true...

It'll be your only option for PC gaming handhelds and AMD based gaming APU laptops come 2026+.

It'll also be inside a sizeable fraction of pre-built gaming laptops and PCs.

Of course 1st party HW is the baseline specs wise.

One of the hot things in that market right now is Steam OS being able to be installed on handheld and miniPC devices. If what you are saying is true, that market is going to get a lot less open and almost impossible for competition when it comes to OS. This would be Microsoft/AMD locking Linux based OS out of that market.

I went from excited to apprehensive on how I feel about this now. I guess I will wait and see how this shakes out.

I don't think they "need" to or even care much about sales on their store, otherwise they would not bother with Xbox at all. Clearly that is not what is driving them here.

Windows has an entire Linux Sub-system built into it called WSL. Microsoft owns GitHub and deploys Linux architecture with Azure at massive scale. They are not in competition with Linux anything.

Prebuilts are gaining in popularity. Some new users do not want to go through building and setting up a pc. So it makes sense to offer a PC like device as more people are shifting towards PC gaming instead of consoles. And being a device that appeals to both console users and also pc gamers Xbox essentially has two markets to tap into. Only way for the console to succeed is the success of these new chips. The custom Ryzen AI needs to offer some serious gains. But if PS6 uses the same chip as the neXt box, much like this gen and last gen, then it's over.

If they aren't making money on the hardware and they aren't making money through their own store fronts, then what is the purpose of releasing their own dedicated platform?
The only thing that makes sense is if they think it will push people into gamepass and I really don't see that happening if Steam is an optional store front on their device system

uh....question? If I buy a pre-built. How do I access video games?

Would that still make Xbox/Microsoft the gatekeeper on what can be installed on these systems if they are OS locked? I don't think Microsoft views Linux as a true competitor but Steam OS vs the streamlined WIndows 11 they are working on for this space could get competitive. At least I think it can.

Steam is already an optional storefront on all Windows systems. If these new Xbox devices are running an optimized Windows build then…nothing changes.

It's possible they have a new long term strategy

"Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" was invented by MS back in the 1990's. So what they could try to do is make these "Xbox PC" things and have multiple stores. Then they'll turn around and sue Sony and Nintendo to force them to allow other stores on their consoles, same as what Epic did to Apple. Then they'll release their store onto Sony and Nintendo consoles (and Gamepass) and try to undercut them to starve them of revenue and drive them into bankruptcy

Far fetched, you say? MS has done it before. This is how they crushed Java. They invented this strategy after all

Embrace, Extend, Extinguish – Microsoft's modus operandi. You can guarantee that in order to get these APUs at cost, you have to agree to preinstall Windows on the device. That's the deal. The Xbox backward compatibilty would require Windows anyway.

Linux is installed via a boot-loader before an OS kernel is even loaded. Anyone who knows what they are doing can install Linux on just about anything. And anyone who thinks there is still some war between Windows and Linux these days has no idea what they're talking about.

anyone cares? this is just a pc with extra steps.
Makes no sense. if someone wants a console, they want a console. Not a big windows steam deck without steamos
After xbox 360, microsoft forgot what a console is and who it is aimed towards. Let's hopw sony doesn't follow in their stupid steps like they always do, the idiots.
The cold hard truth.

I do not think it is a war between Microsoft and Linux. I as much as said so when I said I do not think Microsoft views Linux as a competitor. There does not have to be a war for Microsoft to go after an emerging market. I am concerned because I did not get a clear answer if these devices were going to be OS locked similar to how consoles work. If that is not the case, I am very excited.

Probably to expand the base and they get a cut of games sales and GP.

No different than first party companies like MS and Sony selling consoles for a loss for decades until the cost efficiencies might become favourable during a generation. Stores do the same thing. Why would any store sell a piece of hardware for hundred of dollars to breakeven? Same strategy. The money is in software, gamepads and whatever knick knack peripherals there are.

Which is why giving chips away for free increases anti trust concerns rather than the other way around if it were like you say,

Where does it say the hardware is given away for free? The OP's post says sold for no profit. That means to me breakeven cost pricing.

Right but pc is not where their vast majority of gamepass subscribers come from. They come from the console side.
So what is their plan? Allow the biggest store fronts from pc into their console ecosystem? And that translates to more revenue….how?

Looks like MS decided to go the Panasonic 3DO route. This shit is dead on arrival. I can see some hardcore Xbox fans buying this but most gamers will ignore it even more than the current Xbox. Sounds like it's gonna be expensive with none of the benefits of actual PC gaming like being able to easily swap parts and upgrade and none of the benefits of console gaming like a cheap price or simplicity.

This sounds like a confusing mess, but I much welcome that to the last precisely 20 years where we have had two nearly identical boxes with exclusives split between them. At least Microsoft is doing something different this time.
