Now that the PS4 has already outsold the Wii U, where does Nintendo go from here?

I don't think it's crazy to assume that Nintendo games would sell much better on systems with sizable install bases.

And maybe the other guy values a Wii U less than a 360? He said it'd be his Nintendo box.

Again, citation needed. First, think about the types of games that Nintendo makes. Sega's recent outings sold better on the pitiful Wii U install base than they did on a combined base of 160 million on the 360/PS3. Hilariously, so did Rayman. Then consider a large percentage of revenue would decrease from software sales (see, again, Sega). So please, once again, citation needed.

If this happens, Xbox would be over with.

Serious question - what if this is the final Xbox in console form?

How would this addon work? The Wii U is not like the Nintendo 64 and its Expansion Pak, and connecting via USB ports won't provide any greater speeds. Could work if they provide a sensible way for people to reverse engineer their consoles without breaking warranty, but that would probably incur a lot of bluescreens and hissy fits as well.

Why can't you be more like that, Wii U?

When I say add-on I'm talking about whatever gimmick (for want of a better word) the QOL will be based around..be that a Kinect style camera or something else.

I'm saying there's a chance that the QOL will be based on the current Wii U GPU/CPU (I certainly don't see it being any more powerful) and use the same software engines...so it may be that you'll be able to add a camera (or whatever) to the Wii U to replicate what the QOL will do(without having to buy the entire QOL hardware package).

Pure speculation on my part..but as we know a cross format OS is coming it's certainly possible the QOL will have similar guts to the Wii U(minus the costly gamepad/streaming tech/blu-ray ..and + a new gimmick).

I believe QOL is going to be based on something that's similar to what's in high end phones/tablets, not Wii U. I think they were talking about software/OS layers when they said they would like to move forward with what they have now.

Look, Nintendo has money and they have some of the world's best developers. No reason they can't get back on top but they should do the following:

1) new management aka non Japanese. Not trying to be racist but they need someone who knows the global market and related trends. Their insular structure explains their late 90's approach to everything involving the internet.

2) invest in an online infrastructure. Turn that PoS they call an Eco system and ape what Sony has done. Start doing cross buy and giving us access to your insane and cherished back catalogue.

3) Integrate your handheld and home console. Make them run seamlessly between one another. Allow cross saves and remote play. Make people see the value in investing fully into your platform.

Still too early for me to say this is going to happen.

But the rest of the year tracking at Jan numbers in their largest market?

Just like WiiU I'd say One would be screwed. America is by far the largest market for both MS and Nintendo wares. So it'd be possible, but I need more receipts before I jump in.

I don't get why PS4 having outsold Wii U changes anything. They were already in the shit. I don't see how this thread is any different from the myriad of threads on this topic in previous months.

It's not like either the PS4 or Xbox One are impossible to outdo power-wise. Nintendo's platforms have had a short life cycle anyway; Wii U will get its announced titles and no more. Christmas 2015 would be a great time to give the hardware thing one more shot by outdoing Sony and Microsoft.

Alot of people were wanting to believe consoles were dead and dying and that the other new boxes would fail just as spectacularly as the wiiu.

When Iwata talked about non-wearable the first thing that came to mind was Kinect. That tech was the only thing that made sense if it's going to be something you can interact with and actually be unique. There aren't a lot of companies doing that on the retail level. Which is why Microsoft kept on with Kinect. I believe it was said before that technology was taken to Nintendo and they passed on it as it would have been to expensive to do at the time (Microsoft had to dumb it to make it affordable for the 360 when they did it. Which is why it wasn't that good.) and some have said that Nintendo in theory could do it now with the setup they have with the Wii U's gamepad. A few things would need to be different. So them going in that direction, possibly finding a way of making it work even better and cheaper but doing it differently then Microsoft might be one possibility as to what the QoL platform is related to. Just an idea.

Yes and there are also people (not you) going too far the other way.
My take: still way too early to be getting the party poppers out when it comes to sales. Lets see where they stand in a few years time before we declare them a success.

I have ran a lot of scenarios through my head and I think the way to go for Nintendo is becoming a software only company.

Their strengths are in great games, not hardware, not an ecosystem. Nintendo sucks at that, badly.

Get all your games out on the (dying) consoles, but also on phones, Oculus Rift, PC, Google Glass whatever.

I feel the exact opposite. Nintendo is a hardware company and is distracted by creating software themselves.

They should license out their IPs more and sponsor projects led by third parties. No more trying to do everything themselves. It distracts them from the true money making machine, license, royalty and franchise deals.

Probably the most likely scenario under normal circumstances, but with the 3DS sales collapsing as well I'd say to expect new hardware from them on either front next year.

If it's a home console they'll be in trouble because they will piss off a lot of people. That said, Nintendo won't care if they hit on a great idea where they see more money in the future from other consumers.
