October 2015 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes November 10th

Honestly, Microsoft's PR is amazing. Biggest launch of Halo in history? The key is to reveal little info when sales are relatively low. ;) Well, at least we got PR from them. Still, this sounds more like damage control, so I'm still leaning towards a PS4 win in October, I think.

This is interesting from the press release:
Fans around the world have discovered the pure entertainment of what The Verge calls “an absolute masterclass in how to craft a first-person shooter” and currently the highest rated Xbox One exclusive, first-person shooter game of 2015, according to Metacritic.

The last I checked, Halo 5 was 85 on Metacritic, with about one third of the scores at 80 or below. The "highest rated" XB1 exclusive is only at an 85 metacritic??? Really??

... Oh, I see now... "highest rated Xbox One exclusive, first person shooter game of 2015.

Man, MS PR is good!

You forgot to bold 'of 2015.'

So many qualifiers....so lil time....

What else is MS (and Halo) competing against in October, i forget. I'm wondering what would put XBO or Halo in second place.

Man reading the other thread the NPD results are going to be a mess when Halo numbers come in. God speed mods I dont envy you on the 12th

I think maybe with the way things are changing the prediction threads should be changed to revenue/profit instead of numbers sold?

NPD will still track sales. And if we are good as gold we will get them. So let them have their fun with PR manufacturing and wait until the hammer falls.

Don't you mean the number of people logging online or renewing their PS+/Live subs? These are the true measures of success and sales in the modern era!

It's ok to be happy about the revenue, if you're a fan and so on, but changing the tune to the point where you suddenly consider units sold as irrelevant is a beauty to behold.

To be honest, I don't remember seeing such a clear cut shift in narrative, here on GAF, as I've seen on that thread.

I still can't get over that "best rated XB1 exclusive FPS of 2015" line. I mean surely they realize that people aren't that dumb right? Everybody knows it's the ONLY XB1 exclusive FPS. The way MS spins makes it seem like they think everyone are clueless morons.

To be fair, I didn't even notice that line until people pointed it out.

Maybe that's the plan, put so much stuff that everyone forgets half of it anyway :p

But look at how many people eat it up. It's said to make you feel good. It gives you. It gives you no particulars. But the words "smashing records" are what people latch on to

Honestly I don't know why we didn't see that revenue focus coming sooner knowing the premium price put on the console bundle and the franchise first inclusion of Microtransactions. Thinking back it couldn't have been more obvious how they would spin it of sales figures ceased to impress.

Definitely the latter.

See: The Halo PR thread.

Ehhh there's a difference between dumb and self imposed delusion. At least I hope that's what it is.

Sadly the spin works look at all those in the sale thread defending it to death. All those with common sense and point out the truth get hunt down. Now people don't care about sales is all about revenue lol...

Fair enough.

Nah, it's not Microsoft's fault that Sony PR is a bunch of uninspired, lazy bums.
Best rated PS4 exclusive 3rd person shooter featuring Sir Galahad of 2015.
It's fun. And no one will ever notice you hide something...

At times they make it seem less like disrespecting human intelligence and more like having complete contempt for their audience.

But then again, like a previous poster said, there've been many instances were people swallow the narrative (FF14's exclusivity, Parity clause etc) - so we can't really judge them for it.

And yet if Sony did similar bullshit with U4 I'm positive numbers would suddenly matter to them again.

Honestly yea it feels like they are talking down at their fans treating them like they have no common sense. Reminds me of that whole "rumble is a last gen feature" bullshit that Sony pulled at the start of last gen. Except you know lasting the whole damn gen this time.

While I agree with you the PR isn't even for their fans. It's for people who aren't gaming enthusiasts. Who may just happen to read the headline on various news sites. It's really just another arm of marketing.

Sony does need to look at hiring a better PR company. I don't really see them put out anything quite as high quality as this.

Good point. It's easy to forget we aren't the intended audience for these little PR blurbs and it definitely explains the fearlessly brazen spin. The actual intended audience may genuinely not know any better.
