October 2015 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes November 10th

According to what I' ve seen the PS4 -is- listed as an online only deal, but it doesn't add up.

They have a bundle Battlefront PS4 (regular ed) + 2nd controller (the game doesn't have local co-op afaik) for ... $389. .. no deal at all pretty much.

EDIT: Actually the PS4 is in the front page of the Sam's club BF ad, so nm.

Their "Event Deal" is the Uncharted bundle at $299, along with a vizio 58" at $698 and a HP 15.6" laptop @ $499.

The PS4 is going to sell BOAT LOADS.

Thanks, For some reason, I simply didn't see that on the front page of the ad, lol. I edited my post

Swerving around marketing deals are like the expected norm these days. MS/Sony will both pull "moves" against the stuff that gets their boots shaking.

The question is of course which deals manage to be effective despite competition undercutting the deal with a freebie. Last year's Destiny deal was a strong example of a huge win for Sony, where the more expensive marketing deal bundle won over the freebie bundle significantly.

???

I guess there's no more marketing deals since both MS and Sony will seemingly have free game weeks to compete against the other company's official deal for the rest of this gen.

The only difference is PS4 has LE PS4's that people like to have so MS free game deal doesn't affect much but XB1 has only a basic bundle which means nothing if PS4 has the same offer.

He was talking about RPG's, in general, which includes WPRG's. Though unlike Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Witcher III, Fallout 4 has FPS qualities.

Those games did well from what I remember. Not as good as PS4 versions but definitely no where near what the typical JRPGs do.

I agree. However, I do think we will see a redesigned XB1 soon, though (maybe at one of the next two E3s). I think they can make the system much smaller and still not have to worry about heating issues. I assume that's the reason why it was so big in the first place (even with having a power brick). They absolutely wanted to avoid another red ring fiasco. If they do a redesign, I wonder if they would drop some things. For instance, I wonder if they would axe the HDMI Out feature and, if so, I wonder how much money and space they'd be saving if they did so.

Yeah, that's the reason why the system's big. I don't think they would drop HDMI In for a redesign since it's just a simple port (and MS is continuing to support the system's OneGuide with new features/updates). I definitely think we'll see a slim model some time this gen though.

It's still a major stigma, the ghosts of Mattrick. I think Spencer said in the past few weeks that people still ask him if the X1 is always online. That, plus the resolution stuff and the parity clause for indies, Forza 6 failing to chart on the NPDs and RotTR being sent out to die... if Nintendo is no longer playing with house money, MS should follow their lead too.

Forza 6 failing to chart has little to do with "the ghosts of Mattrick". The game series was never a huge seller. It's true that they are still fighting against their bad launch event (and will probably never completely shake things off from it this gen) but they are not in a similar situation to Nintendo when it comes to the home console space. Third party support for example couldn't be any more night/day between the two.

Is there a shiny Fallout themed Xbone bundle in NA?

Only if you win it via competitions. Not readily available.

Really? Why isn't there one readily available? It's one of the biggest games of the year.

The special bundle they have for the contest looks like poop in my opinion (haha). It's probably hard to make a special Fallout bundle that looks nice, fits the game's style, and has an attractive price all at the same time.

I'm not sure how the Black Ops 3 PS4 is doing but I would GREATLY prefer a normal Black PS4 with a free copy of the game than the special (orange) bundle.

There's far more to marketing deals than just a special console. Having simple association with the game in ads (with no mention of the other console the game is for) is better than nothing.

Microsoft's marketing deals have yet to yield big results. At best, it just kept things evened out. I think Witcher 3 was associated with X1, for example, and it sold more on PS4.

So, basically, I am saying the marketing deal for Fallout was never relevant. The free Fallout added to PS4 will just add on to what was going to occur by default.

Disagree. Last year's deal with Advance Warfare helped/worked since it added even more on to the system's November NPD sales vs. the PS4.

I wouldn't say "not relevant". I do agree though that marketing deals for hyped sequels usually don't have the same system sales impact as marketing deals for hyped new IPs since games that fit the former are usually already well associated with both brands (Xbox and Playstation).

That may be the case but what sells more consoles an ad on Gamestop that says PS4 or a LE PS4 Bundle? The only reason Sony made marketing deals this holiday was to indeed sell consoles not the games.

Sure, but I think shooters will always be favorable to the X1. Everything outside of that, not so much.

What other new IP have MS had this gen? I can only remember Evolve off the top of my head.

Depends on the game/bundle. While I (again) don't know how the COD PS4 bundle is doing, I'm pretty sure that the Destiny bundle did far more for PS4 sales than what the COD bundle will do this year.

Yeah, I pretty much agree.

Just that and Titanfall I believe.

Yeah, AW bundle added several hundred sales (200?) on top of the ridiculous AC bundle last holiday. It might had been an "expected" success thanks to the brand power of CoD, but still a win nonetheless.

If Sony can beat MS in a month where a major Halo game gets released, then it has to be considered.

Throw in the towel, clean sheet design, start over.

MS damage all the great trust of gamers with the Xbone reveal. They can't rush another console out. They need to rebuilt the trust and built up there first party studios like Sony did last gen. They should learn like Sony did and then apply this to next gen. The Xbox one is profitable and still sells well in the US and UK.

Why do people keep saying this phrase? It's clearly untrue. XB1 is not profitable.

Why don't people say the correct term and say MS divisions are profitable?

Boggles my mind...

do we have Financial statement for XBOX division? I also thought that the XBOX division is loosing money

I do not think there is a Xbox division. Rather, the Xbox is lumped in with another division (that I cannot name atm) that is profitable overall.

The X1 on its own is not profitable though.

Fallout bigger than Tomb Raider is not even a question... and yes only comparing Xbone version.

just look at gaf, there's been like 8 active Fallout threads and 1 TR thread these couple of days. Has anyone seen any mass market advertising and/or launch trailers for TR?

I've mostly seen the "greatest games" commercial with Halo, TR, Forza, Gears and Rare Replay.

I think I've see that too, but no TR specific commerical? Surprising since the reboot famously sell a few million and SE come out and say it failed to meet expectations? I guess they could be saving money or cutting back on advertising...

Not really personally. I have yet to see a Tomb Raider commercial on TV, but see some pop up ads on various websites. Or ads on Youtube.

However, I remember them selling the idea that the Microsoft and Tomb Raider exclusivity deal was more of a collaboration to make the best possible Tomb Raider Game. At least that was the PR from both sides. I am just curious as well to the marketing aspect. Microsoft normally goes big with the marketing for their games. And for Tomb Raider, I am personally not seeing it.

I just watched the Cowboys vs. Eagles game and there were no TR commercials (or any game commercials, strangely....). You'd think that publishers would want to take advantage of the large number of viewers for arguably the biggest football game of this week....

They also said they were happy to get access to the Microsoft marketing muscle...and the push for this game seems much weaker than TR2013.

Just like how we don't know if the Xbox One is profitable, we also don't know whether it's actually losing money (and "common sense" isn't gonna cut it).

The PS4 is going to sell BOAT LOADS.

Might not need to wait till Black Friday. Target has the PS4 Uncharted Collection Bundle for $297.50 using the cartwheel link: http://cartwheel.target.com/offer/50465. (That's $349.99-15% = $297.50)

By stacking a registry coupon you can take another 15% off. Use your red card and take 5% percent off as well. Walked out with a Uncharted Bundle today for $262. Share the news. Black Friday is going to be banana's.

Any deals on Dragon Quest Heroes?

Welp, there goes MS only marketing deal.
I don't understand what their deal is. The commercial for FO4 during The Walking Dead had all three versions at the end, not the usual Xbox or PS4 blurb. There wasn't any indication of anything special or exclusive to the Xbone at all. Seemed strange to me, knowing that they have a deal and all.

Maybe they did not pay enough money. As cod and battlefront is only being advertised as available on ps4.

I'm imagining Microsoft got the exclusive rights to promote Fallout 4 alongside their console, but not the totality of the marketing. What you saw was likely a Bethesda commercial. Bethesda has nothing to gain marketing solely for Xbox One themselves when there a millions of PS4 and PC players too. Yeah the Xbox One version is front and center but they also want you to know of the other versions too. That at least makes logical sense.

Well mods are coming to xbone first, not like that is being said in commercials

Xbox one is not exactly moving up in the amazon hourly best sellers even with the imminent release of fallout and tomb raider. PS4 bundles are stil on top.

Earlier, someone was saying the Bone was losing money at $350. Do we have a source for that? I'd have believed that last year — especially with all of the software they were including — but $350 with a game this year seems like it should be break-even for them at worst. I know it cost a bit more to build than a PS4 at launch, but PS4 costs <$290 now, and I'd have guessed Bone was seeing similar cost reductions.

If only retail is still a good number. 1.5 million x 50% digital = 750,000
Windows version hasn't launched yet.

[XB1] 430K
[PS4] 450K
[3DS] 110K
[WIU] 85K

feel the PS4 will have the slight edge. Wouldn't surprise me if they are flipped though.

Should be a good month for both.

Over the last two nights I seen a lot of TR commercials, one from gamestop and other from MS. The one from MS has the greatest Game line up at the end featuring all the exclusives games boxes. MS is doing a last few days marketing push it appears. Since is getting nice reviews I guess MS can showcase those reviews in the commercials if they want.

If this can be some measure : Kaz said last year that PS4 is profitable from the start, Xbone...well, division lost decent amount of money last holiday and in recent interview Phil S. refused to answer the question about Xbone profitability.
