Official CES 2006 Thread (AGAIN)

Samsung make their announcements. They are not tied to any next gen format side. Blu Ray player is scheduled for April.

Samsung today pledged to ship a Blu-ray Disc (BD) player ahead of rival manufacturers, getting its BD-P1000 machine to consumers in the "April timeframe", according to Jim Sandowski, head of Samsung USA's digital product marketing.

The player will pump out HD content at 720p or 1080i resolutions, Samsung said. Supported audio formats include 192KHz LPCM, Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus, MPEG 2, DTS, and MP3.

Like Sony, Samsung said its machine will also play users' existing DVD and CD libraries, along with content stored on DVD-RAM and DVD±R/RW discs.

The BD-P1000 also has a memory card reader capable of taking Compact Flash, XD, Micro Drive, SD, MMC and RS-MMC, and MemoryStick and Memory Stick Duo cards. Ports built into the device include CVBS Output, S-Video Output, component output, HDMI, and both digital and analog audio outputs.

The BD-P1000 is scheduled to ship to the US for around $1000 - twice the price of Toshiba's entry-level HD DVD player. Senior Samsung staff claimed that's the result of last-minute price discounting to help make HD DVD appear more attractive to consumers. Whatever the reason, it's going to set a precedent that BD player makers are going to have to follow.

For now, though, Samsung officials said BD would succeed in the market by offering consumers the "best features" and the "best HD performance". They also believe BD will win through thanks to its superior support from Hollywood studios and other content providers.

The company did not address claims made last year that it will play it safe by shipping a machine capable of playing both BD and HD DVD discs.

"Oceans 12"

Half surprised they announced at all! They haven't followed Paramount's lead with mirrored support, for right now anyway. I guess The Matrix: Reloaded can be added to that too, from the "Blu-ray wall", if not any others..

Now..disney, disney, disney..

Damnit, I just bought Million Dollar Baby and Batman Begins. Re-buy time! I won't buy Charlie and the chocolate factory until later I guess. :)

Yeah i've held off on some titles lately because of Blu Ray although many classic titles wont come after a while.

And that's all there is to it. Blu-Ray has firmly cemented itself as the new media leader.

Sweet. I've held off on buying Batman Begins for a hi def version. Like Deg I've cut down on DVD movie purchases in anticipation for Blu Ray versions.

Yeah plus it'll look alot better in HD.

I can't say that I have slowed down buying DVDs... maybe after they announce the launch date and prices. :D

I don't really plan on re-buying many movies that I already have on DVD either (maybe some classics like the godfather or some kubrick movies).

anyway I want some new TV news! Where is KLEEE!?

Yeah, I heard about that one. Bodes well for SG1 (I hope) I'll be getting both, hopefully SG1 will be released on Blu Ray.

Michael DELL has reaffirmed their commitment to Blu-Ray in his keynote speech :D

So, Blu-Ray has all studios except Universal announcing release titles, with Sony, MGM, Disney, & Fox being exclusive at this point.

I saw both the Canon and Toshiba SED demonstrations. A word I would use to describe it would be "amazing". Both were demoing 720P 36" prototype displays in totally darkened demo rooms using their own special demo material. The contrast, black level, and overall color fidelity was right up there with the best video I have ever seen. I tried to get them to provide more details about price and availability but Canon said nothing has been decided, and Toshiba would only say what they announced yesterday (1080P 55" set available by end of the year).

Each demo was about 10 minutes long, I think. The demo areas were very crowded. Toshiba started with a short video about the technology of SED which was interesting.

If Toshiba can make this technology affordable and reliable and if the actual product looks anywhere near as good as the demo, I would have to say SED looks very promising.

Lionsgate too.

Bluray doesnt even come close to the goodness of HVD storage. I am hoping for everyones sake that HVD takes off rather than bluray. We are talking 300GBs plus !

A 50" Panny 1080p was talked about. No pricing yet. Panasonic ussually take longer than Pioneer when it comes to resolution but they beat them on PQ(10,000:1 contrast etc.) and importantly price. It will without a doubt cost less than the Pioneer 50" and be great quality too. Rest assured it will be one of the benchmark tv :)

I just wish Panny offered 72 Hz like Pioneer. Or if they are lazy, at least 48 Hz.

The timing is just wrong unfortunately.

I think HVD has great potential for PC and DVR purposes though ... I just wouldn't expect much support for prerecorded movies.
