Official DS Hype thread... (no 56K)

feel the magic seems like the best bet, unless you just want to wait 1.5 weeks for Mr. Driller to come out.

I'm actually really excited about this thing coming out...more excited than I figured I would be. I just hope Mario doesn't feel too awkward with a d-pad. I really wish they could've come up with some way to use a recessed analog stick. Oh, well.

you have not been paying attention :)

No word yet on Feel the Magic's length / replayability? I am sold on it, in theory, but I don't want to hear that you can beat it in 2 hours and be done with it.

no word yet, and I wis some sites would post reviews before the launch..

I agree.. hopefully it's not short.. though sonic team is usually good about providing some length into their games.

yup... I guarantee people will be swamping the local game stores and not leaving, just playing wireless with other people there....

Fortunately they don't really come with much of a charge, so people will be forced to go hope and plug it in for a few hours.

Because I got mine yestreday :D

Awesome, AWESOME system. Beautiful design and excellent interface.

It even asked for my birth date :/

It feels absolutelly fantastic and the screen's sensitivity is just perfect.

IGN claims it's for PictoChat to announce to everybody that it's your birthday. Might a word-censor be in place if the specified age is under 14 or something?

BTW: How'd you get yours, Cris? Game store selling early, review copy?

seriously I can't wait to see what type of software this thing has a year from now

Whatever 3rd-parties feel like porting over from the PSP most likely.

In all seriousness I played it at a kiosk in best buy this afternoon. I actually did find it somewhat hard to see, but that's more than likely the notorious best buy lighting. The responsiveness of the touchscreen was good, but I didn't really like the build quality of the thing and while there could be some neat stuff on it, it doesn't seem like anything that's going to make me break my streak of not buying any handheld systems.

Nope, work related.

I like Hunters. They really nailed the Metroid Prime feel technically. I really hope they can manage to get in a good 1 player adventure in the final build, and given that it wount be released until Q2 2005 they just may be working on that. I mean, the multi is there and running.

This week so far has been the worst part of the wait for DS. Now that Halo 2 and GTA:SA are out of the way this is tops on my wanted list. There is a Target across the street from my job so I've been heading over there during lunch everyday to play the Metroid demo. Can't get enough.

Does anybody know if Hunters 1-player mode is actually going to be an adventure or just single player deathmatch w/ bots?

I'd imagine something resembling an adventure, considering that if it were the latter, it would have been a launch game, easily.

Oh well this was a Hype thread until your post :)

Got a chance to try this today...

I kind of expected 60 fps, based on E3, but Prime Hunters only runs at 30 fps. Still, it looks pretty sharp.

Oh, I can see how people would get excited about it, I just don't have the time or inclination to own a handheld gaming device, so my responses to these things are always rather muted. I'll probably feel the same way about PSP unless the screen is just so godly that it puts me in a trance or something.

I bet MP:H will be the first game to use WiFi, which is why it is being delayed. I wouldn't really expect an adventure.

Don't forget, some GameCrazy's are going to sell them as soon as they arrive, so call them up and check.

I called my local store and they'll have them in Friday.

Very nice! I flubbed up my EBGames pre-order, so I stopped by GameCrazy, thinking it was enough of a remote hole-in-the-wall that they wouldn't have sold through their pre-orders. They said they weren't even taking pre-orders per se anyway, rather just using their "wish list" to hold one for me when it comes in, and seemed very confident that they'd have enough to go around (manufactured shortage?? for a Nintendo console launch? you're talking crazy).

Having it on Friday would be icing on the cake.

But what if you want TWO screens??? Then what do you do?

Is there any hope for an early release? I notice the games are shipping on the 17th according to EBgames.com

Nintendo has never released a system early and has gone so far as to punish stores who have.

So the chances of either an official or unofficial early release seems doubtful.

ebgames has it 12/28... to me over a month later isn't the launch window, hence why it wasn't included.

it looks interesting though... a palm-style game for the ds... I can dig on that.

It comes with a metroid demo? Is this the first time a demo of a game has been released on a cart? The ds carts must be cheap to manufacture if they are willing to give a demo of a game on one.

eh, tetris is free from like 1000000000 different places also, but Tetris DX still rocks my socks...

if they do something to make the game more interesting than just the flash game I'm cool with that.

I played the DS today at Best Buy and I must say I was pretty impressed. I never saw the system when I was at E3 so this was my first time seeing the graphics in person. PSP is looking alot less impressive after seeing the Metroid Hunter's demo. Graphically I have no complaints.
The small screen size really does hide some of the graphics imperfections. It actually loooked better than some PS2 FPS games thanks to the silky smooth framerate.

The only thing that surprised me about the actual DS system was that it seems awfully light. Even lighter than a GBA SP. But it's hard to tell how much it weights when it's not bolted to the display. The screen sensitivity was real nice too. The only problem I had with it was Even though the screens are bigger than the GBA, it looks much smaller when you see it in person. I guess two things made it seem small 1) 3D graphics. 2) you have to point to tiny little icons with the stylus.

Metroid Hunters was fun too. Call me crazy but I actually liked the control setup where you touch the enemies on the screen to shoot. I can see myself doing alot of switching back and forth between control modes while playing this.
Overall, the DS isn't as revolutionary as I expected. It's definitely another competent Nintendo handheld. I have no problem replacing my SP with one of these. :)

whoa ho ho... I wouldn't go that far.. for the majority of my GBA gaming yes, but for multiplayer gaming and good ol' GB(C) gaming, the SP is still the best.

Zoo Keeper can be played for free here:

Evidentally, this is an old version of the game.

Actually, the GBA/SP is the only way to play multiplayer GB/GBC/GBA games. i think once DS versions of popular linkable GBA games are released, we'll start to see the older versions phased out due to the simplicity of WiFi linking.

I see borghe. I was just going by the fact that Nintendo said the "launch window" was from Nov. 21st till the end of the year.

Did anybody else find it difficult to fire, move and aim all at the same time.? My brain can only do so many things at once it seems. It was hard fightin the boss at the end of the Metroid demo because I was trying to do it all at once.

Is anyone's store doing a midnight launch? i've called both EBs in my area and neither is planning a midnight launch. If that's the case, i may just pick the system up at Walmart, considering they're in the same shopping center as my job, instead of waiting for EB to open up and having to drive half an hour to get there.

If I can get it Saturday Night/Midnight Sunday at Walmart, I'll go there for sure, Otherwise I guess I'll just wait early Sunday morning at Target.

try walmart.. all of the ones in my area are open til 1am on sunday morning normally.. I imagine they will be selling them at midnight just because they are open then

and have none on sunday morning at 6am.... LOL!!!!!!

OK, I'm pretty much on the fence with the DS after playing one in the mall. I want confirmation of that WiFi link being used for bonafide Internet gaming. No cryptic song lyrics, pictures, or self-referential paragraphs about "communication." I want, at the very least, developers on the record about them at least considering it.

If the DS will have games that are online, I'm in*. Otherwise, I'm holding out for whenever Meteos comes out.

(*And no, this is not me being a hypocrite. The dynamic of online, portable gaming is much different than online console gaming.)

Looks like you'll be holding off then. Nintendo seems to be cooking up something in terms of online with the DS, but they're tight-lipped as to what it is.

I felt like I had to think about it more using the stylus for mouse look. It works fine once you get used to it.

I actually found the other control mode to be more natural since your pointing at the actual game screen. It doesn't feel like your trying to draw something without looking at it.
