Official DS Hype thread... (no 56K)

woot.. gamestop just called... they are selling everything except for the system, Mario 64, and the two EA games... going there on lunch.

the point is to limit what you need on launch day..

or worse, running out of a game you really want..

thinking back to the GCN and being a ways back in line and having to go to another place to get Monkey Ball and Rogue Leader.

This I find this helps my Hype Level

The Mario 64 minigames rule!

I'm having to battle my wife for playtime ever since I showed her the minigames in Mario 64 DS. They are really a great diversion and will be perfect games for when you don't have much time to dedicate to full levels.

They seem small, but they really add a lot to an already great game. The integration of the touch screen ranges from basic to innovative. You guys should be impressed by these.

8 are available from the start, btw.

-Oh, and you catch rabbits to unlock more minigames, though you start with eight.

The capture device seems to suck. The whole picture is moving constantly (see HUD). Or is that the compression? In either case, not very good. Asphalt doesn't even look so bad. I see lots of shimmering in MP, unless that's the video.

the quicktimes are better than the WMVs... if you are watching the windows media it looks much worse.

It's in-store. We got them. I just got back from a two hour session with Mario 64. Better than I expected. The thumbstrap analog control is perfect. If you switch it to touch control, it's amazing. It even brings up a little analog circle on the touchscreen wherever you put your thumb, so you can see how far you have to slide it to get it full tilt. It takes some getting used to, I want to just continue to move my thumb across the screen, but once you do, it works great. The digital pad works well, too, surprisingly. Camera controls in touch mode are wonderful. It looks fantastic, SOUNDS AMAZING. I didn't get to play Feel the Magic, that's tomorrow. Oh, and I did get a couple extra stars in Mario 64. Just more collecting stuff, but instead of red coins its silver stars.

Those games are really $40? I thought they were just place-holders. :lol

Nice impressions, Soul4ger. So some kiosks have a Mario demo? What store was that?

No, we got the actual hardware in. I have one pre-ordered, I work there, I opened it in the back and sat and played it. We got Mario in, Feel the MAgic, Spider-Man, Madden, the Urbz, and Asphalt. I played Mario. My copy of Mario. HOOHAH.

Asphalt is too ugly for words

It doesn't look good, but I think the video quality is a major issue here. Look how the lower screen shimmers and is filled w/ compression artifacts.

I will probably opt for Ridge Racer over this due to its single cart multiplayer.

gamecrazy only got in games today =(

they did have a demo unit though, so i finally got to play the damn thing. very very nice.

Thinking about this, I bet we can kiss single-cart multiplayer goodbye for Wi-Fi games... It's too good to be true to think that you can play against someone else on, say, Ridge Racer from across the country w/o owning a cart.

You suck.

:)

Upon watching the rest of those Asphalt videos, I like the how the framerate looks and the sense of speed, but it looks like the powersliding in the game is just lousy. I think Outrun 2 spoiled me for life on that issue... I don't think I will be getting this game.

There are lots of compression artifacts but generally Asphalt GT isn't the best fit for the DS hardware. It seems to push a decent number of polygons and has very contrasty textures... it really brings out the worst in the system. Some texture filturing would have helped tremendously.

Played a demo unit at Best Buy a short while ago...

The unit itself looks nice, less plasticky than I was expecting based on some shots someone took with their digicam a while back. Metroid played suprisingly well with the stylus. I thought aiming around was fun and easy. I thought double tapping the screen was supposed to shoot, but it resulted in a jump instead, with shooting done by pressing the shoulder buttons (not sure how well this will work if you have to hold the unit at the same time). I couldn't figure out how to roll into the morph ball when a metroid latched onto me, but it eventually detached by itself.

Graphically, it isn't too hot. About N64 quality. One thing that left me pleasantly suprised is the lack of "texture warping" in this game. Everybody ragged on the DS when it was revealed that it was lacking something that the N64 had, which relieved the warping found in PSX games. Well, I ran back and forth, focusing on the textures on the walls and floors, and didn't notice any texture warping. Is the anti-texture warping feature back in the DS?

I couldn't really judge the sound. Best Buy was a little too loud. My overall impressions of the system are positive, though.

Ok question. Can I use my GBA SP adaptor (UK) with an american ds?
more than likely yes. it is the same power adapter meaning it needs the same DC power for charging.

While DS probably has some texture positioning precision problems, which results in a bit shaky looking 3D, I don't think there were some easiliy visible warping problems even in the first demo units. It's the lack of texture filtering on DS that people said N64 had and DS doesn't have. That makes it's textures look more pixelated like PS1 textures, and not like those on N64 and later consoles.

true, but the pixelated textures ARE much less noticeable at actual sizes on the screen... I really didn't notice much pixelation on Metroid Hunters compared to what shows up oin the movies..

Thanks for clearing that up Marco. I really didn't mind the pixelly textures on the PSX, but the warping got to me at times. Glad to hear that isn't a problem on the DS.

Now if only there was an anologue stick and F-Zero X port...

finally got some good time in with the metroid demo..

god I love that control scheme... (mouselook).. I can't wait though to use the thumbpad.. the sytlus is fine for the most part with the system bolted down (And thus suspended), but I can imagine it sucking kind of bad having to hold and awsd it with one hand while mouselooking with the stylus in the other. but with the thumbpad.. man....

precise.. the only way to describe it. point and click.. as good as the mouse.

ok, I'm done here.. anyone who complains about how the game controls either hasn't played with the mouselook controls or sucks at mouse/keyboard FPSing...

Sunday can't come soon enough.

Amen....I played it tonight and was blown away by the great control in Metroid. Too bad it may not be the same for Mario.

We'll see Sunday!

I saw that too, but after lookinga tthe schedule I see no DS specific stuff. Lotsa old Nintendo shows I've seen before but nada DS.

Want!
:lol I was just looking that up as well. Pretty lame, I must say. Oh well, I'll have the DS in my hands that day so I'll hold my own special celebration.

Well I got my DS today (but alas no games). My first impression (based entirely on just looking at it) was that the face buttons were too small. When I compared them to the SP's buttons they were indeed quite a bit smaller. However I can tell Nintendo did this for the sake of symmetry (the buttons are outlined in a d-pad shape) and in actual practice they feel fine. It took me a while to properly set up the thumb stylus. I had to maneuver it quite a few times, but it still felt kind of weird. I then played the Metroid Hunters demo for about an hour. I tried out all of the control schemes and the default stylus control scheme was definitely the best. After my first session playing it, I was a bit disappointed with Hunters (and the DS as a result). I couldn't get the thumb stylus to feel quite right. I stopped playing for an hour and then started playing again. That made a big difference.

In my second play session, after playing for a few minutes, everything just clicked. I got the thumb stylus and strap into a very comfortable position and the controls began feeling very natural and comfortable. I started pulling off moves that were a bit problematic before. I played through all of the modes multiple times (the morphball training was especially good). After you play each of the three training missions, a bonus CG video opens up that shows Samus facing of against a few bounty hunters (including a dark samus). After the first hour of play I was definitely not going to buy Metroid Hunters, but now after my second play session I'm definitely considering it. So far I'm quite happy with the DS.

umm.. all things considered (and all "professional" reviews) and that seems a tad high.. oh well, glad to hear. :)
