Coming up with 32 memories of Sean Elliott is easy, since 50 were needed last season for someone else.
1. Last to leave the locker room.
2. First with an opinion.
3. Standing in the back of a charter jet his rookie year, killing time on the long trip from Portland to San Antonio after a playoff loss, talking non-stop and looking absolutely collegiate and bright-eyed and innocent.
4. Coming off the floor against the Lakers a decade later, with kidneys secretly failing as he chased Kobe Bryant, quiet and looking absolutely drained.
5. The first game back after the transplant operation. Who thought Noel Elliott's kidney could dunk like that?
6. Taco Cabana spokesman.
7. Taco Cabana-linked nicknames. Early in his career, didn't Soft Taco fit?
8. Soft heart, too. When a San Antonio newspaper went under in the '90s during a Spurs road trip, only one player called the room of the newly unemployed beat reporter to offer his condolences.
9. Almost a Rocket? The failed exam was the first sign his kidneys worked in mysterious ways.
10. The side-spin rotation on his jumper. Had he cured that, he might have been more than merely the Spur with the most 3-pointers in franchise history.
11. At first, Larry Brown's punching bag.
12. After that, Larry Brown's disciple.
13. He basks in the victory parade in 1999 and hours later, doctors consider putting him on dialysis.
14. Religiously loyal: Reverend Terry Cummings presides over his first wedding ceremony.
15. How much did he love driving his BMWs? He became the tallest human in history to attend the Bob Bondurant Racing School.
16. Writing a newspaper column during the playoffs, he had fun with the rather large posterior of a former college teammate, Tom Tolbert, who played for Golden State. And Tolbert didn't like it.
17. Among those who would not feel comfortable in the Sean Elliott Gymnasium in Tucson, Ariz.: John Lucas and Isiah Thomas.
18. Sports Illustrated called the Elliott-Dennis Rodman trade the best one of the 1993 off-season. But for the Pistons.
19. Too coachable? Ever generous, he once loaned money to one of his assistant coaches.
20. Thank goodness Malik's Philly Phamous wasn't around then to be linked to Elliott's business. The menu at Fullcourt Pets mice, snakes, lizards wouldn't work on a roll.
21. From the Detroit Free Press in the summer of 1994: "Bill Curley, drafted No. 22, is just what the Pistons need."
22. The long, last step he learned in the mid '90s, allowing him to get closer to the rim on drives, turned him into a finisher and an All-Star again.
23. Those missed free throws in Game 1 of the 1995 Western Conference finals? He made up for them a few years later.
24. Elliott, sincere and concerned about team chemistry, told coaches the rookie was taking too many shots. The staff assured him that, yes, they wanted Tim Duncan to shoot a lot. :lol
25. Draft day 1989. If the Clippers had picked Elliott with the second pick, even Noel couldn't have saved him from that sickness.
26. Not just gyms carry his name. Kevin O'Neill, former Raptors head coach who was an assistant at Arizona during Elliott's career there, named his son Sean in his honor.
27. Elliott never minded a prank. He would call up his accountant, disguise his voice and claim to be from the IRS. But when a radio station reported Elliott, having failed his physical in Houston, had AIDS, Elliott didn't laugh.
28. Selling his house to Rodman.
29. A year later, asked if he wanted to buy back the house, Elliott said: "Knowing Dennis, I have a feeling I probably don't want it back."
30. Working out for the Spurs last spring, when Devin Brown's ribs were bruised. Isn't that the sign of a man still in love with the game?
31. Two trades, two sore knees, one ring, one new kidney, one loud laugh.
And No. 32, at his zenith. Teetering with heels raised inches above the sideline, with various Blazers diving at him, with David Robinson the logical option underneath, Elliott retired perceptions and his jersey in one motion.
