did you get lost on the way to nail gun age forums or something

My god.

Yeah, I got a Wii for Christmas in 2007, and 90% of the time I've spent with it on was playing Mario Kart Wii. It's my Mario Kart player, and hasn't been on since May.

Even the DS is more of a hardcore platform than the Wii. At least the DS has tons of JRPGs.

This whole argument is so tired. Seriously GAF, you're getting boring. It's the same thing every month. NPD numbers come out, Nintendo dominates, GAFers talk about why the console sucks and how much better the HD consoles are and how their Wii is collecting dust and how it's only for casuals and how motion controls are inferior and how Nintendo are killing gaming and before you know it, it's next month's NPD and we do it all over again! Fun!

This argument is as redundant as the alternative. GAF always runs in cycles. We praise the same thing over and over, make the same comments over and over, and when we're done we do it all over again.

You singling out this specific cycle makes no sense at all. I mean, it's like telling people to stop fellating Nintendo because they sold a billion units. Or Sony before that. It's going to happen because it's a relevant subject, and will forever until it stops being relevant.

The DS has a lot more than JRPGs

But what does that have to do with these NPD results? Are you saying that Wii sales will slow down without some more games? Will Wii owners turn to the 360 or PS3 out of sheer boredom?

I just don't see how everyone's personal opinions about the consoles are that important in a sales thread.
The NPD threads haven't been about sales in the strict sense since... well, actually I don't think they ever have been. NeoGAF, for how many different countries are represented here, is still primarily an American message board, which leads to more interest and more participation in the American "sales" threads. The more people you have in any given place, the more likely it is that you've got undesirables in the group. These undesirables can pretty easily set off people who would otherwise be fairly quiet.

Thus, the whole thing turns into a big schmozz of people pushing their opinions as fact, people blindly ignoring things that would be detrimental to their arguments, and people who realize how stupid the thread is trying to dumbpost the thread into oblivion.

You want calm, articulate discussion of NPD sales, you'll probably have to find a different, non-US based board without too many members. G'luck.

Not only has the good content been few and far between - I can't think of a single Wii game that I liked, other than Wii Sports Bowling, that wouldn't have worked just as well, or in most cases better on a regular controller.

Metroid Prime 3. Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition.

The pointer control made both of the control of both of these games infinitely better. I own a Wii and a 360, and I get frustrated having to use dual analogs now to aim. They're so much slower and less accurate. The Wii controller innovation isn't just in motion controls, personally I think the greatest thing the Wii has given us is the pointer IR stuff.

Che, i totally get were you are coming from, and while i am not a Wii only gamer, hearing you constantly tell those who do enjoy the wii (like me) that you feel sorry for us, is pretty annoying. Almost like you are telling us we are wrong in some way. I feel like you are looking down at those who enjoy a different experience from you and i bet it would be a positive thing if you could stop telling us you think we suck.

Look, sorry it comes across as condescending but when I look at the ABSOLUTE GLUT of games for both PS3 and 360 this holiday, I can't help but feel that Wii-only owners are getting the shaft. For those who are enjoying their Wii and its core games release schedule -- good for them and I mean that honestly. But as a hardcore gamer, I no longer consider the Wii-only gamer as a hardcore gamer if they're satisfied with the current situation of their only current-gen console.

Besides, you're not a Wii-only gamer this generation so I wasn't even referring to you.

I definitely acknowledge there are some good games on Wii. Shit, I own most of them. My problem is that there just aren't enough of them. Blah blah. You get the picture.

The real irony of the situation is that folks in this thread are throwing around these Wii third-party success stories like it's an ace up their sleeve -- when in reality, the phenomenal sales of the Wii and its successful third-party contingent have not been beneficial for the hardcore gamer whatsoever.

Doesn't mean I can't smell my own, however.

I just don't see how everyone's personal opinions about the consoles are that important in a sales thread.

I think there's a post as early as page 2 where someone starts the monthly clamoring for 3rd parties' heads.

Not to say that any of the unusually nasty haymakers being thrown in this month's thread are more deserved by one side or another, but once sales are used as validation for something as subjective as dev support, you can see where the conflict will arise.

And I agree with you and others above, we have been having the same discussion over and over again, about things that don't appear to be changing at all. The only thing that's really changed in the North American gaming landscape between October 07 NPD and October 08 NPD is that PS3 exclusives are doing better.

It's the same people bringing up the same arguments in the same threads on the same subject.

I have my criticisms of the Wii - and consider it to be the worst of the 3 current-gen consoles right now - but do I have to read yet another trillion posts that say "My Wii has been collecting dust" or "I haven't turned my Wii on in months"? Seriously guys, we know that already. You don't have to keep telling us.

Anyone notice, Nintendo now has 3 first month bombs in a row, Mario Sluggers - Wario Shake - Wii Music.

Mario Sluggers bombed? Surely not as bad as Wario, which is unfortunate (well I really mean Wario > Mario as far as sales should have gone.)

to say that that's one of the best posts i've ever seen on these forums, deserving of bolded font, would be pretty much absolutely an understatement
It would be a disservice to the fire that is that post.

Truth be told, I've never really understood why so many people assumed that LBP would have mass casual appeal. When has custom content and online sharing ever been the trademark "casual gaming" on consoles? These are things that appeal to the core gamer. LBP is a great game, but it's a game that appeals mostly to a a hardcore audience.

Again, we don't single out a type of argument because it's negative. If this is your belief, then you should believe the same thing about those who keep presenting the same positive arguments over and over again.

The central truth is we're always going to present our opinions in similar ways forever until our opinions stop being relevant. They're still relevant, so they keep coming out. If you think Wii is totally awesome, and it is still here being totally awesome, then it makes sense when another discussion about Wii's quality pops up you say "Man, Wii is totally awesome!"

I am trying to highlight the fact that you, and SOOOOOOOOOOOO many others, have this little of habit of being big fucking hypocrites when it comes to singling out negativity. If you were really tired of the act of redundancy, you'd be all "man can we stop talking about how awesome Wii is, can we stop talking about how shitty Wii is. Can we stop talking about how great the sales for this game or that game are, we always do!"

But you won't. Because it is the topic and its related NEGATIVITY that is pissing you off, not the redundancy.

But as a hardcore gamer, I no longer consider the Wii-only gamer as a hardcore gamer if they're satisfied with the current situation of their only current-gen console.

Quite a few of those glut games are also coming out for PC. I'm looking to pick up the new Prince of Persia on PC this Christmas in fact.

Also, sure, it's easy to look at the last four months of 2008 and say "Gee, Wii sucks as a 'hardcore' machine." Most Wii-only gamers, including myself, would agree, based only on that.

But, well, the situation isn't permanent- it's more of a dry spell. In fact, in the 2009 Wii games thread, only 7 out of the list's 40 games are published by Nintendo, even fewer are actually developed by them. And while I will agree that the second half of the list isn't too strong, the first half definitely is. From MadWorld to The Conduit, all of them seem to be really strong releases, and I wonder if you'd argue against that.

Edit- Except for Tenchu. Don't know WTF that's doing on the list.

Respectfully, I don't see how virtually any of this on either "side" is really relevant to what this thread should in theory be about.

Don't tip them off to one of the last few sane non-"game-specific" threads on GAF, please.

The MC topics are only as quiet as they are because two of the platforms are completely irrelevant, and the PSP despite being a successful piece of hardware is never going to mount a serious threat to the DS' lead.

During the DS/PSP first year though? The Famitsu 40/40 Nintendogs topic was as heated as anything on the North American side.

This is a public forum so don't be vague and start naming people.

The thread is about masturbating over sales, and what these sales means for their respective platforms. If discussions leaks out about whether these sales indicate this or that about the platform (including, but not limited to, the quality of their libraries or their strength as a platform for this demographic or that demographic), it is still on-topic

What are we naming people for? I don't complain about negativity, I welcome it. I love contrary opinions because it's about the only time real, honest discussion is born.

I'd add that Segata runs a pretty tight ship.

But it's the same thing every NPD thread - a thread, mind you, about sales. Sure, the first page or so is about the actual sales but a couple of pages later and it's the exact same thing every month - people talking about how shit the Wii is. And it's the exact same arguments every single time.

If that's not redundant then I don't know what is. It's like we never learn from the last thread - no matter how much something has been argued, it's never resolved and thus it goes around in one big continuous circle.

No, I don't expect NPD threads to be about the actual sales. But can we at least stop spouting the same bullshit every single time? That goes for both Wii praisers and bashers.

Ok maybe you're not getting my point. Yes, it is the same thing every thread. It always will be. But note: you're singling out how it's always the same NEGATIVITY every thread. if it was the redundancy that mattered, you'd be complaining about all that samey POSITIVITY that keeps getting posted.

We're not going to single out negativity because you're tired of hearing it. Otherwise, why don't we limit the positivity?

The point is (once again) that it is the NEGATIVITY that is pissing you off, not the redundancy. And that is a fanboy thing and we don't police by fanboyism

Um, no. Praising something is not the same as talking shit about something. If these threads were nothing but people praising their respective consoles there would be no arguing and it would be a much more pleasant place. It's when people start to talk shit that things go bad, and it's always the Wii haters who start to talk shit.

Oh, look it's another Wii music hate thread on the main page! I wouldn't have expected that!

Matters aren't helped when within 5 minutes of the numbers we have multiple posts decrying the lack of 3rd party Wii support.

Easy easy target

Umm Super Mario Sluggers came in at #13 in the September NPD

I knew something had to be wrong with that- was marketed heavily on children's TV with a pretty good ad.

I wish Wario would've gotten a commercial...

If you want the unicorn and magical golden leprechaun forum, it's this way.

I'm sure that will be your utopia of universal positivity. Otherwise, welcome to the real world and welcome to GAF, a discussion forum.

Hey man, don't drag the "I love unicorns" forum into this.

And this is different from the situation in North America... how?

Doesn't seem like Nintendo's disgusting dominance keeps things quiet around this thread at all.

Oh bullshit. There are haters for everything and anything on this forum, Wii included. The biggest problem with GAF is that people get so defensive in the face of any perceived slight that they fly off the handle in defense mode without actually even considering the points presented to them.

It all starts becoming a little less relevant though when these arguments keep moving sideways rather than forwards.

I am not even sure why we wanted to know that in the first place.

Wii Music to out sell Gears 2 and Animal Crossing this month! Year of PS3 becomes reality by stomping 360!

Wowwow can't wait for November NPD.

I've said on countless occassions that Nintendo's holiday 2008 output sucks ass.

Does it deserve critcism? Absolutely. There's a lot of problems with the Wii. But seriously, do I have to hear the same things every single month? It never changes, and it's getting pretty damn tiring.

I was just giving you a hard time :D

But yeah, I don't criticize the Wii's lineup until the crazier Wii defenders come in and try to criticize the HD console lineups, all the while implying (or outright stating) that the Wii has a much more interesting lineup.

And this is usually from the same people who champion C-list "hardcore" games like The Conduit and Mushroom Men that would be completely ignored on the HD consoles.

What I mean was that the people who praise the Wii and bash the 360/PS3 in these threads are just as bad as the people who praise the 360/PS3 and bash Nintendo's console. Of course, you see a lot more of the latter than the former.

And I'm not saying some of those criticisms aren't justified either. But everytime I walk into an NPD thread I know that soon enough someone's going to say "Why is the Wii selling so well? I haven't played mine since May!" and from there we have the same arguments we did 3 months ago. Wii lineup sucks, HD consoles only have brown shooters, waggle is bad, etc.

I like negativity. It keeps things balanced. This place would be boring if we just kept praising the same things all the time. But at the same time, constant negativity on the same subject can be just as bad. And that's what we're getting in these threads.

It wouldn't be so bad if we actually resolved some of these arguments (at least to an extent) and had new arguments instead. But we're still arguing about the same things we did last year.
