|OT| - Star Wars Squadrons: Rogue-ing in the XXIst Century

But more than anything, why would anyone want to play this "close to Rogue Squadron" when you can use a flight stick and play it like an X-Wing game.

It looks fun for a while, VR mode is definitely a big plus for me personally, but I wish they'd have made more like a rogue Squadron with a long and interesting Single-Player campaign, like ground warfare etc.
They could've also have included iconic battles from different times like Hoth, Death Star, above Coruscant etc.
Since they said there will be no additional content, I feel like this is a very wasted opportunity yet again from EA which really hurts.

^Exactly what I was thinking, this needs lower atmosphere battles but then they are really limited to hardware, especially on the VR side of things.

I'm really enjoying this, more than I thought, I loved the space battles in BF2 the most and this scratches that itch very well, playing in VR will be a dream if I ever get one, just out of my price range tbh

So any recommendations on a flight stick/set up for this and MSFS? I feel like this game would feel better than what I'm using (xbox one controller)

I mean I get that, but a star wars RPG in the vein of a first person Mass Effect would be awesome too, travel the galaxy in a 200 hour epic, dogfighting, exploring, be a jedi, smuggler, whatever, all in VR.

We're getting there. This is huge step right direction. Full singleplayer and multiplayer AAA for $40 with VR support and crossplay.

I wish I could be as optimistic as you are, but sadly it's EA we're talking about.

True, but if you told me Squadrons was real before I knew about it, I'd call bullshit. It just doesn't align with EA at all. I think both Fallen Order and Squadrons are steps in the right direction. I don't expect them to show us the glory days of Star Wars gaming in a year. But, it seems like they're turning the ship around.

PSVR holds up decently for the price, but its showing its age. Basically 2016 vs 2020.

The difference is more than the video shows, even for my setup PS4 PRo vs Rift S 2070S

Still, if PSVR was my only option, I'd be happy.

You got a point there.
Let's just hope it continues like that.

I want to enjoy this.... but it's so dull! (The campaign.)
Fly to marker, shoot X amount of enemy ships, fly to jump point/mission end, repeat.
Visuals are great, sound design is great... it's the core game-play loop that's not holding my attention.

Let's face it, the single player is a glorified practice run for the multiplayer. I'd like better campaign like Rogue Squadron sure, but that games weakness is this one's strength, the multiplayer. I'd rather get a finally well-executed multiplayer VR space battle game than yet another good campaign if I had to choose.

I think this game is gonna do pretty well, I suspect we have more of this coming. Star Wars Squadrons 2 will be insane.

^ The problem is, you need to play it in VR. It's indeed weak on the TV screen but in the headset it becomes a better game somehow, even the campaign. It benefits from the VR +2 point effect and from a 5 or a 6 becomes a 7 or an 8 like RE7 is an 8 that becomes a 10/10 or Wipeout Omega collection raises from a 10/10 to a 12/10. It plain science.

I'm sursprised it's running on it at all. When I first seen the reviewers come out and talk about blurring and having a difficult time with detail I was half expecting to be playing Driveclub VR in space and have to take a break every 15 minutes but I took a gameble and was pleasantly surprised. It's not exactly Wipeout levels of clarity but there is a lot more going on, greater distances, greater visual effects etc. It's just enough to not be painful on the eyes or sickening and only a minor hazard to play in multiplayer on some maps but that's why they made the instruments so clear and for that matter the game is intrument focused. As with real militery aircraft in the skies at shorter distances than these as well as earthly lighting, you wouldn't see fuck all unless it's on your machines and dohickies. I think they did a great job balancing the visuals for the hardware and I'm hard to please with VR these days after games like Wipeout, Adtrobot and Blood and truth doing away with the blurring. That said, I wouldn't mind some foveated rendering options.

So apparently star destroyers are indestructible???? In the tutorial thing where you end up trying to destroy it, ive literally targeted and destroyed all the key things on it (all have the red X when you pause) except the main destroyer itself and "Destroy the power source" or something like that is listed at the top but no matter what i do the motherfucker wont blow up or lose anymore life so i have no clue what the fuck is wrong. Im so God damn mad right now i want to delete the game.

EDIT-- Apparently its a bug....Holy fucking shit, how does shit like this get past QA?

We have become aware of and are actively working to address a bug that may prevent you from completing the Fleet Battles Tutorial if your starfighter is destroyed at certain points during the exercise.

In the meantime, you
can still complete the tutorial (and earn the cosmetic items) as long as your starfighter is not destroyed during the tutorial.

Downloading from Steam now. Not bought a game in a long time. I'll get the HOTAS working first and then try VR.

EDIT. It's a bit of a mess on my system. Sometimes load the game and there are no menus or sound. Think I will give it a few days so they can patch things and try again.

EDIT2. I had another attempt after a reboot. Thinks a lot better. It's amazing. Flying a Tie fighter never felt so good. It's brilliant in VR.

Good game, but why have the Empire become so diverse.

They were basically the nazis, so I am not sure how to feel about them now. I thought it worked better with them as the bad guys when they were all old white British guys.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Any mods for this yet? Simple stuff? How about some fancy new crosshair like old X-Wing to replace the boring stuff in this? Any fixes for the deadzone stuff and stuttering beyond 60fps on PC? Did the patch do anything meaningful?

The controls settings screen is really more complicated than it needs to be with having weirdly named functions I'm not sure what they do before playing the game enough and I don't wanna play it without setting the controls right lol.

It's a game owned by Disney, this game is aimed at kids first and foremost and scaled up to adults through the eyes of parents as is Star wars as a whole now. Questioning diversity here is kind of like questioning why a Disney princess doesn't have a lesbian sex scene, it reflects worse on you than the the creation or creators. Adult, single Star wars fans are a speck of dirt Disney would love to be rid of for this exact reason. Don't think of this as Star Wars, just a great VR space fighting game, sucks for you Star wars fans but it is what it is and the times are the times.

Well this game doesn't work. Been trying to get into a match for 20 minutes on Ps4. It starts to load then dumps back to the title screen.

EDIT: since I can't get into a match I finished story mode and didn't get the trophies for it. What a mess

Trust me, it is very very unlikely QA did not flag this. Super unlikely... games and software in general is routinely shipped with known issues.

Man, the view out of those TIEs is really claustrophobic. Not a fan.

Pretty fun game. It's not blowing me away by any stretch but a solid forty dollar purchase.

I'm loving it. The actual gameplay mechanics and playing MP fleet battles either VS or coop against AI is worth the price.
I've only done the first 2 SP missions, but I'll get back to that soon. I'm on Xbox using a controller and tweaked my left/right sticks for better control (for me):
Left stick up/down (inversed) = pitch down/up
Left stick left/right = roll
Right stick up/down = throttle up/down
Right stick left/right = yaw

I'm going to purchase a Thurstmaster T.Flight One for my Xbox. Seems to get average reviews, but meh, just keen to try it. It has Series X support according to their site, so I'm sure i'll get use into next gen.
Definitely fly around in the practice arena, do the time trials to get better. I'm constantly doing the power-drift maneuver and dodging missile lock-ons more. Feels really good :)

Yeah even in VR where the scale is massive the Tie's view is limited. You can look down though unlike the Xwing.

I've heard patches are coming.

Have you tried cockpit VR games? I know a few people that can only play games with a cockpit that "grounds" them to the scene. Otherwise they feel dizzy etc.

I normally get a bit queasy when it comes to space games in VR but because the way the cockpits are designed in the game and because of the vignetting of the structural bars of the cockpit, I don't get any sickness at all in this game

it's great. a tad blurry on psvr, but still very acceptable on ancient PS4. playing with ds4, more deaths than kills :messenger_tears_of_joy:

but a dream come true. Much more of a believable thrill ride than the ride at Disney along with several noisy people...

Hi! How is the singleplayer component? I'm not too much into multiplayer, but would love this in VR if it's anything like Rogue Squadron.

If you are a Star Wars fan then it's a must. The VR is amazing and I'm really enjoying the story mode so far.

Yeah, hoping the patch fixes all framerate issues.

I’ve been holding off jumping back in hoping this gets fixed...I tried messing with settings and it seemed better for one session, then reverted in another. Now I’m wondering if it was just placebo considering the issues others are having.
