Down to 2007 from 2258 tonight.

4-11 tonight. I'm not even sure what to change up at this point...doing what I can with what I'm being paired up with.

Guys, I am so excited for Soldier's nerf. I honestly think this is going to make the game so much better. I mean, we're still going to see plenty of him, but I'm hoping he's no longer an obligatory pick just to have a chance of winning.

I'm less than 20 points above 3000 and I have an insane desire for some late night solo q.

RIP.

I won't let it get too bad. Just want to see if my luck continues
2-1 all lucio games

3-0 easy sweep.

Bad Hollywood loss, I had four golds our Mercy was awful.

Reverse sweep KOTH with some really awesome teammates, we made some great switches to win.

I'm taking it and running. Hope to play with the squad again tomorrow.

I'm not the best person to ask. Lol

Our games were awful until yesterday and we've been doing really well since then. I definitely feel like I've turned a corner with Lucio, but it's a team thing for sure.

If you want my honest advice. Some of the randoms we play with, they are similar rank and their game sense is abysmal. Learning positioning, ult timing, ult managaement, good comps, what to run against certain comps. I think it's the most important thing.

Playing with the Gaf group isn't a very good way to climb. But it's fun, and we usually do alright. So come aboard some time :)

Are you all back over 3k?

It's cute how you think everyone on GAF is awesome at this game. I've never been within 1000 SR of 3k except for that one season where they screwed up the placements and placed everybody higher than they should have been.

Do you ever group with people here and who are you best with?

I know this wasn't directed at me, but are there any GAFfers who are even in range for the system to allow comp grouping with me? What's the limit, is it within 500 SR or within 1000 SR, I can't remember?

How did you do it?

I did a smurf this season where I placed silver (not intentionally) and climbed back to diamond very quickly all solo queue with no voice chat. My W:L immediately after I hit diamond was 29-12.
I recommend sticking to characters which you know you're good at. It means a smaller hero pool, so make sure you can do at least 1 dps, 1 tank and 1 support. I never throw and I try not to tilt, just make sure you can play your role and do it well.

Nozomi Sasaki lol.

Are you bummed she just got married? ^^;

By the way, how is Ana on console? You don't have any issues with accuracy?

1000sr for diamond and lower.

OK. Anyone within 1000 SR of 1345 want to group for some comp on PC?

People like you are the reason people like me are still stuck in ELO hell. Smurfing should be banned, go play back in your own level please and stop bullying us lower SR folks.

I don't want to be the the one to break it to you, but you're the reason why you're stuck in Elo hell. You're not going to get anywhere blaming other people for you not being able to climb.

Smurfs are indeed pretty repulsive for player experience and elitism/community health, but sadly there's not much that can be done unless game maintainers either ban them or put them in a separate queue.

My heart bleeds ;_;

I did all my placements with Ana, which is how I landed in silver. So yeah, I can't hit squishy teammates (Genji I'm looking at you).

Considering my W-L, I would have literally carried lots of other players in wins. Also, I didn't lose on purpose to get to silver, I was aiming to place in diamond.

I don't see it as a huge issue but I'm confused as to the reasons people do it.
I wanted to learn Ana, but I couldn't do it on QP on my regular account due to the much higher MMR. My base mechanics for her were so poor I could neither hit anyone nor stay alive.

Sure, but the ladder balances itself. People going in with a huge skill disparity will hit win streaks and leave those brackets quickly. Saying you're stuck in a bracket because "Smurfs!" or "Everyone else sucks! " (←not what Danj was saying) is not helping you improve or climb. If you're matched with a smurf, you're just as likely to be paired with them (increasing your chances of winning) as against, so it balances out.

Who you play with or against is beyond your control (unless you do premades), and if you're in 13XX, then chances are, you could be doing a lot to improve your game (I know, because I just climbed to 11XX).

If someone good makes a smurf, are they even getting placed under 2k SR after their placements? Probably not that often.

Anyway just Zarya solo carry your way out of poverty SR tiers.

Pretty much. Immediately after placement I went on a 6 win streak that brought me from silver to plat. Reaching diamond took much longer. I'm not an amazing player by any means, I'm 37 I don't have amazing reflexes like most of the considerably younger OW population. I'm also probably the only PS4 player here who plays with extremely low sensitivity (25/15). Anyone who has much better reflexes and play a dps like Genji or Tracer would climb even faster.

For PS4 Ana that sens probably isn't that abnormal. What aim mode are you using?

I think in using like 30/25. I want to increase it sometimes but I'll take the ability to hit flying Pharahs over trying to track melee range Genji while im Zen.

The problem with my experience in Elo hell is that I get a lot of quitters nad they seem pretty disproportionately on my team.

Last night, I played maybe 12 games total. I think I ended with 7 losses and 5 wins.

4 of the 5 wins were just hard fought matches that I had to struggle for.

1 of the wins was kind of a given because I was paired up with a 5 stack that worked really well the other team made frankly bizarre choices in their composition. I'm not sure if they were throwing or just not communicating or what.

2 of the losses were because we were straight up outplayed and are what I consider fair losses.

4 of the losses were due to quitters on my end.

1 of the losses was because my teammate started throwing. And I don't mean just making an off-meta pick, I mean he just stayed in the spawn, moving around but refusing to come out.

I can grant that the opposing team may have had throwers that I don't know about, but somehow, I just get stuck with a lot of quitters while my opponents make me earn every win with blood, sweat and tears nearly every time. I've been stuck in gold for the last few months because of nights like that. I feel that, assuming we have a good team, I can win roughly 60-70% of my matches. But I can't climb when almost half my games are sabotaged.

I use 25/15 for all characters, I get giddy if I vary it between characters. Max assist, max aim smoothing is on for everyone too. For hit scans that require high precision (soldier, bastion, McCree, Ana, etc) I use dual zone. Everyone else is on exponential ramp because I got so used to it before dual zone was patched in.

How does this even work? I probably won this many games after getting placed in bronze at the beginning of the season and it only got me as far as the middle of silver (season high is 1786), why is there such a disparity in how much SR is earned? And also why do I disproportionately get penalised for losing? It seems like I lose way more SR for a loss than I gain for a win.

Also, what's up with the matchmaking? We now know there's a separate hidden MMR for competitive which is unconnected to the SR number, and that like in the other modes, the matchmaker uses this hidden MMR to aim for a 50% winrate. So that means that there are times when the matchmaker deliberately matches you with opponents it thinks you're not going to beat. Who does that? I feel like I'm being set up to lose here.

SR is tied to hidden MMR. If your hidden MMR is lower than your SR while you under perform stats-wise, you're going to lose more SR than you gain. The game doesn't really throw you against people it expects to stomp you, but it will put you up against people it thinks are slightly better than you if your MMR starts to creep up some, as it should. You go up in games, it's going to throw more challenging people at you to see if you should stay there or more.

I still don't quite understand why I should be massively penalised in SR levels when losing to someone the game considers to be better than me. Also I thought there was a patch a while back where they said they were removing the "loss streaks" (where SR losses get bigger when you lose repeatedly) but this hasn't happened either.

Elo hell doesn't exist

also, it's Elo, not ELO

Huh. #themoreyouknow

Well if he got placed 1990s, a 6 win streak with early SR bonus+pre-patch win streak bonus would get you into platinum.

The only reason you lose more SR than you gain is because the game thinks you were supposed to win some of the games you lost or your performance was significantly worse than the average performance of that hero at your skill level.

I've gone days where I go 3-3 and lose 10 SR. Other times I go 3-3 and gain 10 SR. It happens.

The problem I have with this is that I am not the sole determiner of whether or not a game is won or lost. There are 5 other people on the same team that I am on, and 6 other people on the opposing team. I am not so skilled that I can make our team win all by myself. Or is that what it is - is the heights of platinum or diamond or whatever only for people who CAN carry teams all by themselves? That at least would make sense of why I can't move up.

Generally if you can carry a game in a tier, you should be a tier or two higher. Even then, can't carry them all. If you can pull out decent winrates when it matters you should be good. Like, you can be the determining factor in 60% of your wins easy if you're in the right tier. A lot of the times people lose from "bad teams" it's more that there was some path to victory with their lot and they just didn't take it rather than just a bad team.

Wow your guess was spot on, I placed 1985.

You're spending too much time stressing out about rating; it's literally just an imaginary number. Get better at the game and the number will go up by itself.

If you've really been applying yourself towards improvement over the course of months and nothing's taking, then there's not much you can do about it, but I find it difficult to believe that anyone can sustain effort over an extended period of time and not see returns.

I'd imagine that anyone playing an impactful hero can carry matches 500 SR below where they should be. You don't need to be objectively good, you just need to be better than the competition, and you don't need a 100% winrate to carry yourself out of a rating bracket.

I just want to get out of the realm of throwers. I know every tier has this, but don't remember Platinum being as bad about this as lower gold is. It literally ruins the game because short of a miracle, you cannot win a 5v6 game, and I get them so much.

I just want to play a game and not be paranoid about losing a teammember. That's all.

You can do things in a game that increase your chances of winning. Example from a game I played yesterday. Soldier visored on volskaya A and I DMed his ultimate while booping him into the water. They could have won the fight from his ultimate but instead I killed him making the rest of the fight 6 v 5. Keep doing things that help you win a team fight. Recognise what the enemy team or your team has to do to win the fight. Another example was I saw our Pharah going for a massive flank so got into position to nanoboost her. Fight won easily from that.

Well that's what climbing is. You need to consistently make plays that decide the outcome of a match. You're the only thing in common with all your games. If we put you in a game 500 SR below where you currently are, I'm sure you'd win most of those games because you'd be making plays those players wouldnt understand how to defend or prevent. People do get lucky with climbing sometimes or get boosted but in general, you need to carry games to move up. That's how it works at every rank.

I can't imagine that happening, but I would love for that to happen.
At the very least I think Hanzo, Symmetra and Zarya are getting new legendaries. I would love Pharah to get a new one too.

Pharah annoys me because her default skin is the best, and I keep swapping between the colors. And I like having non-default skins on all characters.

Eagle Helmet > Jackal Helmet

Her Gundam suits are amazing, but they falter by having her actual head be robotic too, which ruins the look every time she takes off her helmet. (Why would a robot wear a helmet anyway?)

And I'm just think indian costume isn't as good as her mechanical ones, though I don't think it looks bad. I mainly like that she fires explosive knives with her ult.

So I just want an costume that is just the best for her.

My Mercy play is super hit and miss. On defence I'm so much better with her, because I can essentially set up and jump around to safety.

On attack, no one gives a shit about my security. If I fly to my tank, they ignore me and I don't get a bubble/shield/anything. I also can't hang around at the back because Tracers/Genjis eat me alive.

I've learned from playing Mercy that you usually fail if too many people are spread out and just run off on their own. Flankers are whatever since they're supposed to be fast enough to escape but if Tanks just try to go solo, might as well just give up.

What healer would you use on attack then? I pretty much suck with every other healer. I'd much rather play a tank, but sometimes I have to suck it up and swap.
