Brilliant game if it were released today with updated graphics, it would still be a GOTY candidate. Its a shame the framerate really killed the experiance.

Any one know if overclocking your N64 will get you a better framerate?

I suggest against doing it. You will get stability problems since programming the N64 is pretty much tied to the timing between the CPU/GPU of the N64 with the RDRAM.

Guess its not worth it then

Prefect Dark would have worked better had it not been held back by technological constraints.
I wish it was a GC launch title..

edit: actually no, N64 controller > everything, for FPS.

i made a thread about this a few months ago but i think its important enough to post again:

Perfect dark on PC
using this:
http://www.pj64.net/iedefault.htm

and this video plugin:
http://www.emutalk.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=18817

Playing the game in 1600x1200 with 8xAA, with a kb and mouse is amazing. pump on hi-res in the game options and take off auto aim and you have one of the best FPS ever made.

using the mouse to take advantage of the location damage is great. contempory games should be using that feature. good fun to blast a gun out of the hands of an opponent.

of course, emulation cant do anything for the hideous alien levels and elvis. but the earth based missions are superb as the bots in the multiplayer are fun to play against.

oh yes, one more thing: no slowdown.

PD needed better weapon damage balance. You die in like 2 seconds with too many weapons. It completely ruins the pace of the game, which is what made GE so good in the first place.

I never had a problem with PD's framrate at all. When I played it back then I had no idea about things like slowdown and poor framerate and enjoyed the shit out of it. Even when I did learn what was up I still never found it that choppy. That Carrington Villa level is probably the single best fps level I've ever played in my life, slowdown or not.

have you tried 4 player multi with bots and Slayers? .... powerpoint with mouse clicks is a faster display device.

but!

it is a fantastic game. the Pj64 emulator allows for netplay, im not too sure if it supports PD, but could you imagine online Co-op? or counter co-op?
i must experiement with it sometime.

What!
The N64 has to be the worst controller evar, that said tho.Perfect dark is a good game.

Please give us some high-res PD shots, since I can't try this with my P700.
I heard Rare did make a port of the PD-engine to the DS and it worked well...bzw I read that in a game forum.

Thats a gawd damn lie. Its the only console controller I have used that was good for every type of game. It's also the only console controller that I can play a fps comfortably with. The Gamecube controller is really shitty for FPS's by comparison

Yeah, i thought too that the N64 controller would be the be-all-end-all 1st-person shooter controller (on a console atleast). Nowadays, i've gotten use to playing with dual-analog (i hav HALO to thank for that), and something tells me you haven't.

Perfect Dark remains my 2nd favorite 1st-person shooter of all time (behind Goldeneye).

Like Conker, I'm confident Perfect Dark will be remade in the future. Afterall, who'll remember Joanna by next generation?

Perfect Dark was pretty good in those few moments when the framerate was somewhat consistant.

Otherwise, the game was almost unplayable. Especially in a large multiplayer game, which is a shame because it had such robust mutliplayer components.

No it's my opinon,i find N64 contoller awkward for FPS,i don't own a Gamecube so i can't comment on it.

Bleh, I hate the N64 controller as well. I found it to be good for just a few specific games, but it was awful for general gameplay.

I suspect alot of people would agree that the GC controller is the worst of the big three, and I LIKE Nintendo. The first-party GC controller feels cheap and I don't care for the button-layout. Meanwhile the S-type is built like a tank, is about the perfect size, and is really responsive.

Rare had bit off way more than they could chew with Perfect Dark on the N64.

They would have been better off just releasing it as a GameCube launch title.
