Persona 5 Review Thread

No it's not lol wtf. I can see a game working better there but that's not a valid criticism towards a game.

If you're acknowledging that there's a distinction between design philosophies and that it could work better in a different platform then it absolutely counts as valid criticism.

How tiring the game's systems can be in the platform it plays can turn off potential buyers so it's definitely something worth putting in a review meant to advice consumers lol.

The one thing I hope JP devs take away from Persona is how to improve turn based.
P5 does a lot to make that experience way better things that I honestly think are insane to no have been done before given it was 2016 when it came out in JP. Design had a whole movement around "the user experience" already years before that.

That said I also hope they don't only copy but push further. I still believe turn based is a system with a lot more places to explore and refine especially balance wise.

I take solace that at least one dev that chases trends to a fault will at least probably take good lessons from this game.

Should we read into the fact that the highest rated PS4 titles are PS3 remasters?

I mean Uncharted 4 and Forza Horizon 3 are the
highest rated original titles of the generation. And they only got there by being the exemplars of their genres.

P5 is not a remaster if that's what you're trying to say

W/r/t the jimquisition review, the reviewer says that she enjoyed experiencing p4g on portable and believes the format of the game suits hardware like that better. Like that is completely valid, i dont really see the issue here.

Man. I didn't want to buy this game because of the styling. But hearing these reviews is making me reconsider.

I don't want to drop 100 hours though.
What time investment for the main story if I'm not a completionist?

Criticizing the precense of handheld game design in a home console game is absolutely valid lol, come on people, not every review has to be a perfect 10.

But you can beat Zelda in 20, hell, even 10 hours if you so wish. You're actually required to play at least around 90 hours to finish the main storyline in this.

I mean, technically, you can beat it in less than an hour. But this is impressive for P5 and for JRPGs with 100+ hours as a whole. Bring on Xenoblade II !!! Japan is on FIRE!

Probably 80-100 hours. Looks like it's not for you

If persona doesnt sell remarkably well, its going to give them the opposite impression.
rushed 81 mc game sells 6m and possibly more
fantastic 94 mc game drags it feet to 2mn?

we need to keep in mind p5 wont have the advantage of being the lone good game on a console like it was with golden

Bloodborne got 92 and the assumption is it sold around 3million so far. Xenoblade Chronicles got a 92 and sold a little over a million on the Wii. Unfortunately, no matter how large the userbase, or how high the critic score, some games are still too "niche" for the larger userbase which consists of dudebros who only play sports games or shooters.
Or Pokemon.

My thoughts exactly

Oh I would be more than fine with the PS3 version, but I am not sure if I be active enough to get out my PS3 that I felt I was pretty much mostly done with and try to get through this long (turn based) RPG on the TV. I know that might sound weird, but I pretty much moved towards PC/portable (including playing WiiU exclusively on gamepad), so eh.
You don't wish to play potentially one of the best RPGs of last 10 years because you couldn't be arsed to hook up a PS3 you already own to a TV. Yeah....

People should be free to provide criticism of whatever games they want, citing other games as examples if needed, in a constructive and civil manner. Circle jerk threads of never-ending positivity are just as bad as negative cynical echo chambers.

I agree and feel like what I said may have been lost in translation. Or was just a poor response.

Nevertheless, I am happy for Persona 5 and the great scores it is receiving. I have been excited for it since the day it was announced.

I think what I was mostly trying to get at is people comparing the metascores. I think that's boring and exhausting to see, personally. I don't mind comparisons and constructive criticism.

Because she says it is her only major complaint.

It is like reviewing a PSVita game and saying "yeah it is good and all but if it was on PS4 it would be much better". Like, WTF? Port begging on reviews now?

Man, what a year.

Can't decide between this and Nier at the moment.

I'm inclined to say Persona, because it's my favorite series ever. But the original NIER holds a very special place in my heart in my top 10 favorite games and I just started Automata and I must say it is FANTASTIC. Depends what you're feeling; Weighty themed turn-based JRPG or philosophical Action JRPG. I hope which ever you go with, you get around to both of them in the end, because they are both phenomenal.

She said the beginning of the game is slow and tedious, and if it would have been on portable it would have been more bearable.

Yeah, if you start going down this route, you can technically dock any game that lacks a PC version for not allowing you a wide breadth of customization options.

Wouldn't suspend/resume alleviate that? It's essentially like clamping your 3DS.

100 hours?

I couldn't get past 40 in Zelda... not sure if I should get this lol. I loved P4G, but that's absurdly long.

Curious to how long it took you to finish P4G? It took me over 90 hours, so I already planned on sinking more into this game. Though I did have a friend who beat it in 50 which was very surprising to me.

P4G took me about 90 hours true ending and all.

I get why you'd drop Zelda after 40 hours since it's super gameplay focused, but I have always felt like Persona has had a satisfying amount of story to always keep me motivated to play throughout those hours.

I guess I can see Laura's point, as my only complaint about P4Golden was having to play it on a handheld. Long games on handhelds fucking suck, but I keep playing them anyway. I REALLY wish the PSTV was out by the time Golden released.

god I hate handhelds

The more time I get to hang out with these characters in P5, the better.

I think of the P4 characters as my best friends now after finishing the game. Now I legitimately think Chie, Yukiko, and Yosuke were part of my real-life high school experience. :p

I don't understand how a game that takes 100 hours to mainline isn't getting docked on the review because of the length.

40 seems to be the jrpg sweet spot for me.

I think it's a valid complaint. Monster hunter would absolutely be better on a switch than on a 3ds for some. Me included.

It took me about 90, I think. P5 is not really that much longer then P4G.

Oh, I'm definitely buying both eventually!

Thanks for your thoughts. :) Sounds like I'm good either way.

Not when you are planning on taking an entire day to play a game, and it becomes a chore to get through the early part of it.
