Persona4 the Golden ANIMATION: Thursdays at 12 PM (PDT), begins July 10, 2014

really curious how they will get 12 eps out of the new content of p4g, which is pretty much marie social link... and scooters.... and i guess farmville?

I actually enjoyed the first episode more than I expected beforehand, I think the pacing is fine for a short series that is for P4 veterans and that has to focus on the new content. I also liked how Yu acted like some of the different dialogue options. I also loved how over the top the first battle was and I didn't think the CG was that bad. I also quite like Marie so I loved the scene after the credits.

Indeed, I think it's very clear that the series is aimed at people who have played and finished Persona 4 but may not have played Golden. The biggest problem with P4A was how they tried to cram the entire game down into 26 episodes which simply did not work, so I appreciate the different angle they've taken with the structure of the story. Like I really don't need a recap of TRIAL OF THE DRAGON or Yosuke having to pee at this point, nor does it really matter that they all leave the TV world and return before Yu first summons Izanagi or gets glasses from Teddie.

I'll admit the fight was ridiculous though, killing millions of shadows would be over the top even at the very end of the series.

Not going to happen like this, but if each episode were to represent new content:

1. Marie S. Link
2. Adachi S. Link
3. Beach Trip Event
4. Ski Trip Event
5. Gardening + Bug catching
6. New dungeon + new boss
7. Junes Concert
8. Epilogue
9. Babe Hunt Event
10. Midnight Trivia Miracle Quiz...?

There's more like the Halloween Event, but I dunno. Purpose of the anime's a bit confusing, but I guess that's why I'm intrigued to see more of it.

Maybe the battle with the countless shadows was how the creators originally envisioned it, only to be told by the programmers, "LOL nope...unless you'll settle for a lame non-interactive cut-scene".

Glad that they're taking liberties though. We already have the game to serve as the "canon" so they should go nuts with the anime if they want to. Looking forward to more weirdness and poking more holes through that damn fourth wall. That would be consistent with the meta theme of Persona 4, at the very least.

Agreed! It's a fun series. Nothing wrong with that.

well the very first 'tutorial' battle in FFX you pretty much are fighting hordes of monsters kinda.

Add in two more episodes (one for the Valentines day event, another for a greatly expanded Halloween event with the entire cast) and then you got a format that fits well within this new series :).

I don't mind this is more-or-less focused on the Golden content of P4 (as said content was really great :D) and I like the fact that Yu is still awesome here like in the original animation (and that fits the whole NG+ mentality behind this new show; since he has all his 'social-stats' maxed out, he is much more outgoing with the team and is a more friendly person with people), so I look forward to see how things play out here :).

The most interesting thing to me here is Marie though; it is clear that she is the 'cannon' love interest in this new series (which does make since in the grand scheme of things; she was a option in the P4G to date and the original animation didn't have the relationship mechanics from the games explored at all outside of some funny scenes with Ai). There is a lot that they could do with that and it would be a easy way to have her interact with the everyone else in the show (have Yu invite her during all the major 'events' within the show like the Halloween event and so on).

I'm always impressed by how tall they are in the anime. Didn't get that impression from the artbook or the fighting game, but they are REALLY FUCKING TALL in the anime.

I'm used to my big head characters :C

Oh, and something I wondered watching the first episode: Is english Marie as cute as japanese Marie when saying her... thing? Hanazawa's voice is so best, I don't think it'll be matched, and overall I prefer P4's english voices over the originals.

But the best thing in the entire episode was when
Yu was just standing there, being tall and weird, staring at her after the weird poem. I was already thinking "man that's ridiculous, I hope she doesn't start this bullshit all the time in the game", and then Yu's face was a perfect match for my feelings.

What's everyone's opinion of Igor's Japanese voice? I think it feel to much of a standard old man anime voice while the English one feels more mysterious.

What if the original animation ends up being better than this one? Just a thought.

Well, it WILL be better then this; this is not going to tell the whole story in a solid way (hell, with only 12 episodes, they simply CAN'T tell the whole story in this format; Legend of Korra proves that telling a huge story within such a small episode constant is a recipe for disaster X(), so you will have to watch the original series either way to get the full story (just play the Golden-only event episodes sandwiched in-between a few of the original series episodes).

I get the impression I get from this series is less of a 'grand' thing like the original animation but more of a fun little spin-off from the original series; 12 fun episodes for people who loved P4G to see animated versions of the Vita-version only events :D.

Granted, that isn't enough for a full series (they should have just either made two P4 Movies like they are doing with P3 or make two OVA's themed around Marie's interactions with the P4G wold), but it is something at least :l.

Personally though, I would rather Altus and Index localize the P3 Movies instead of this though; saw the first one online with sub-tittles and really enjoyed it....but I don't know when a subbed version of the second one is coming X(....

Didn't see this thread!

I thought the first episode was pretty bad.
My first thought on watching this is, who is this anime for?
It's not for people that haven't played or watched P4 already, that's for sure, they would have no idea what's going on.
So then is it for the people that already know the source material? If that is the case, then why reshow us the same parts again but much shorter? Just stick to the new Golden content.

And if they need to speed things up because of the number of episodes, why am I sitting here watching the protagonist fight a billion shadows? That never happens anywhere, so why eat up time with it? If you want to speed things up, have him start with fighting Yousuke's shadow instead of these stupid trash mob shadows. It's not even like it's a cool action scene. I don't understand why they need to change the plot. Imagine you are Yousuke and you see Yuu doing that.

I think it would've been better if they had just focused on doing the new content in Golden, rather than rerush through and change the content from the game and original series.

There is enough new content in Golden to do 12 episodes just about that stuff. You've got the two new social links, scooter stuff, beach trip, Halloween, all the stuff in winter, new ending, extended social links for party members, etc. If that wasn't enough they could show the social links they didn't do in the first series too. The fact they are also doing events already covered in the game but sped up is disappointing, considering it means less time for actually new stuff.

I also feel they are playing the "airheaded" protagonist or whatever you want to call it a little too hard this time around. In P4A he seemed normal for the most part with his funny moments. Now he just seems like an idiot or something. People say "Oh well now it is NG+ so he has max stats to do funny stuff xD" but come on. I don't remember there being a stupid stat. In NG+ it was mostly like having enough courage to say ask Chie for her number at the start. While there were some funnier ones to, it was nothing on the level of the scene in this episode where Yuu has his hand in the TV. That was just plain dumb. It's like they thought "Well, the silly protagonist seemed to be a hit in the first series, so let's go whole hog in this one!".

I think it would've been better if it was like this. Persona 4 Golden starts, Yuu gets off the train, meets Marie and his family etc. Then do the calender thing so you know they are skipping stuff that has already been shown, and just keep showing new bits only.
Or they could just montage stuff that happened or whatever. You can say they need to re-establish it blah blah blah but they are obviously skipping plenty of story stuff any way if Kanji is in the next episode, so why not just go whole hog on it?

The impression I'm getting from the first episode is that this is a new game plus Yu being portrayed with how much he's standing out right off the bat.

It looks like the anime started Yu on New Game + lol

Yup, status all maxed out. He had the courage to sing the Junes theme. It is a little weird though, that this version of Yu seems to have a pretty different personality than quiet smartass Yu from the original series.

Watched the episode.....really annoyed how they are handling this series shortness :l; You have a Marie social link event early in the beginning of the episode, Yosuke and Kanji setting up the bike event and Chie/Yukkio setting up the shopping event with Marie....happening on the same day :l....talk about not rushing things XD!. The ending it the best part though,
with Marie singing....in a cage of all things :l?

Also gotta love how they are handling the beach event/fireworks event, not only are they going to be in the same episode BUT
they are going to throw Rise and Non-Bear Suit Teddie too :D!......

Welp, I guess I'll cancel my free trial to Crunchroll now; not worth it being free for something so.....rushed man :(.

the show is free on Daisuki

Persona 4 The Golden Animation Episode 2

Well, now I know what Persona 4 would looks like if it was fused with a fast forward button and horrible Z-Grade fan fiction and antics from a 1970s American sitcom.

I loved the episode, Yu Narukami is awesome.

It's pretty much a supplement to people who played the game/watched the original anime and I think it's handling the events well by combining Marie Slinks + new events together. I'm now just curious when they will mention/show Adachi events.

Looking forward to next weeks episode, "I'm ready to be born" :P

That is great :D. Thanks for the tip man :). I will then continue watching the show (thought Crunchroll was the only way to watch the series...).

I just don't like how they are handling this series :(; I really enjoyed the original animation, so I hope this turns out okay.

This version of the anime is meant to be the equivalent of a New Game + play through. If youve seen the original animation then you wouldnt want to see the same scenes retold again. Even the main character knows hes done all this before and isnt as shy as he was at first. Hes already learned everything from the first anime and now hes able to choose different paths along with the new character Marie adding extra story. Once the show gets into its groove it wont feel like its being rushed through anymore. It definitely feels abit weird at first but im actually really happy that they didn't just do a direct retelling of the same story.

A good example is Full Metal Alchemist compared to Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. Same story at first but they were able to skip alot of the filler in Brotherhood since you had already seen it in the original or in the Manga.
