Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I was reading in one of the lag input threads on avsforum that it returns very inaccurate results for plasma tv's. Can anyone confirm this?

here´s an attempt at an explanation as to why the numbers are higher on plasmas than on lcds:
http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/input-lag

How does this explain why plasma televisions that feel much more responsive are shortchanged by the Leo Bodnar input lag tester which returns a higher figure? Well, we surmised that the flashing white bars need to hit a specific brightness threshold before they can be picked up by the device’s photosensor for lag time calculation: if you decrease or increase the on-screen luminance using the TV’s [Contrast] or [Backlight] control, the Leo Bodnar’s lag number should rise or drop correspondingly.

With Live color set to 'Low' (which according to HDTV test is the most accurate non calibrated way to run the display), this gives the most richly saturated colors i've ever seen on a screen. Pushing it beyond low will blow out the colors to very oversaturated levels. Don't worry about desaturation at all.

I disable local dimming. At least I think I have it disabled. It's either on low, or disabled. I dont notice much difference between low and disabled, either as a positive or negative.

Having rich color and very low input lag sounds great. Thanks for the detailed responses.

I've been wanting to buy a new tv for my apartment. From quick look over the posts it seems that people here are somewhat on agreement that Plasma is the way to go (?). So I looked around and found this Panasonic VIERA - 42" for $399, which is just the right price I'm willing to pay. Here is a link for it:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panason...HDTV/8124416.p?id=1218864357163&skuId=8124416

I ll be using it for gaming (no more than 2 hours a day) and watching films, which I hear its perfect for. What do you guys think?

And you don't feel it's too big? I'm trying to decide on size and that seems similar to my set up.

Also, the glare doesn't bother you at all (as that's the big negative with this TV I've seen so far)?

Also also, is this TV mountable? From photos, it seems like the inputs in the back stick straight out, and the set itself doesn't look very flush. Just curious what you think.

At first it seemed huge but after using it all weekend it's perfect. With my 40" that I had before this I would pull a recliner up to it and play games, now I can sit on my couch and it works great.

Glare has been no issue at all. As long as you don't have lights directly opposite the set or any very bright windows it's great.

Not sure about mounting.

Great you got me looking at TV's now! I'm seeing a lot of arguments for plasma still, but I've never owned one, and I think I'll still steer toward LED LCD.

I updated the firmware of my Panasonic ST60E and I think the lag is reduced.
Did anybody notice this as well?

Keep in mind that display's resolution is 1024x768, so you won't be seeing 1080p, or even 720p, at full detail.

Also, 2 hour game sessions can still result in image retention. That said, my dad has a nearly identical set and TV & movies do look nice on it, resolution notwithstanding.

Oh, thanks for the info. Didn't realize that it wouldn't even give 720p.

Wow what the hell, they still sell 1024x768 displays? For $400? I wouldn't pay more than $50 for a POS like that. :|

It's all fake marketing BS. What do you want to use the TV for? Neither of these will be very good for gaming.

I've said this before that this just proves it.

Question to those that have the Panasonic ST60's, how bad is the input lag in actuality? I've seen the numbers online of how bad is it, but can you actually feel it while playing? I'm looking hard at that ST60, but I'm a little nervous about the input lag. I'm also considering the VT60, but that might be a little harder to sell my wife on.

And no I won't get an S60 because it doesn't have 3-D. Unlike the majority of Gaffers, I do enjoy playing games and watching movies in 3-D.

So my wife surprised the hell out of me and let me get the Panasonic P65VT60. We went to Best Buy yesterday just to look around (or so I thought) and I showed my wife the VT60 (not thinking there was any way in hell of getting it) and the ST60. We got to talking to some sells associates, hooked up a Blu-Ray player with Avatar to the VT60, and my wife told them we're taking one!! The only thing that sucks is that they didn't have the 65 inch one in stock so they're delivering it tomorrow, and tomorrow morning I'm going out of town for work training and won't be back until Saturday. Oh well.

I can't wait to try this baby out with a few PS3 and Wii U games!

Put some color slides on a USB drive and leave the TV on, looping them until you get back. This will help jumpstart the break-in process.

Also, congrats, the VT60 is an amazing set.

So jealous!!! That's exactly the TV I want. Impressions when you get it please.

Thanks! I think I'm going to leave my wife some detailed instructions of how to break it in while I'm gone that way by the time I get back in on Saturday it should be good to go. I also got a free Geek Squad Calibration set up for a month or so from now. I've heard mixed things about them, but I guess it depends on who they send out to my place. I live in a pretty big city so I'm hoping I'll get sent someone with some competency.

Definitely!! And hopefully you'll be able to get one as well.

Anyone have experience with either the Samsung F6400 60-Inch or the Sony R550A 60-Inch? I'm looking closely at these two models and want to know if any of you have some insight into either.

Having a 120hz LED monitor in one room and a Panasonic Plasma in the other room connected to the same PC really is the sweet spot..

I'm planning on doing the same setup.

Asus VG248QE 144Hz + Sony 55W900A.

Except that they'll be few feet from each other ;)

Payday can't come soon enough!

Once again, I'm not interested in plasma's. I don't get why folks here get all worked up about plasmas. They are cheaper and have better image quality according to GAF and yet most Tv manufacturers will market LCD/LED TV's more than their plasmas, and some tv manufacturers don't even make Plasma TV's.

If you don't get why most people are into plasma you should read some serious reviews. The fact that most manufacturers market LED more and don't make plasma is no reason to not be interested in the best option you have until OLED comes along and that option is simple: plasma

Looking at getting a new LED TV for PS4 in the $400-800 range. My options are a bit limited, as I'd like to purchase the set at Costco. Ideally, I'd get it from Microcenter, but their online selection is full of Westinghouse crap. I know for sure I don't want to go with Plasma, as I can't trust my room mate and her 7 year old to not screw it up, I also have a skylight in my living room so its hard to control the lighting in the room during the day.

Here is what I'm leaning towards purchasing:
Samsung 40" UN40EH5300F

In my research, I've found the picture quality is good but I can't find much solid info on response times. From the couple reports I've seen is they are in the 30-40ms range. I realize this might be a little high but I don't play competitively and my FPS gaming will be on my PC.

Anyone with experience with this model TV? Would you recommend it? Is there something else out there at a comparable price I should look at instead? If there is a set which is much better but not at Costco or Microcenter, I'll consider it if it some kind of unbeatable deal.

Posted several times in this thread: http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/

As far as lag goes, that samsung is "great" at 26ms.

W900a disabled options in game mode

Noise reduction (all types. General, dot, mpeg)
Noise filtering
Cinemotion
Skin naturalizer

Motion flow only has the option for impulse, which is a black frame insertion technique. Looks like garbage for 30fps games, but it looks fantastic for 60fps games. It does, however, make things a LOT darker. So it really can only be used in a dark room.

So the wife and I hit up a variety of electrical stores to check out all the current TVs, from LCD to plasma. I went in fully expecting the Sony W900 to melt my eyeballs and be the best set yet no matter where we went I found myself vastly preferring the Samsung F8000 over any set by a wide margin. It is simply stunning. I'm now seriously considering a 60" version if I can muster the funds.

Apparently the latest firmware update has reduced input lag to acceptable to good levels.

Nice, let me know how the Sony compares to that asus on picture quality, screen uniformity, and light bleed. I was going to replace my plasma with that sony, but after buying an 120hz LED monitor I'm not really sure if I want to go back to LCD/LED for TVs.

What about it did you think made it look better? just curious.

Black levels were much better. Colours were richer and both detail and motion was excellent. Just an overall spectacular picture that both myself and my wife agreed was the best we've seen and an unequivocal upgrade from my 2007 46" Samsung at home.

I also love the design of the F8000 and because the bezel is so invisible I'm considering a 60" if I can somehow muster up the funds.

Need some advice Gaf...

I've had a 50in Samsung plasma for about 4 years. It's a budget model so it was only 720p. Decent picture but nothing amazing.

I now have an opportunity to buy a 46in LED Sharp that's 120Hz and 1080p. It's from a close friend so I would actually be getting a really good deal on it.

-Basement with decent lighting (for a basement anyway)
-Viewing distance ranges from 5 to 10ft depending on where I'm sitting

So...should I go through with it and sell my plasma? The Sharp TV will absolutely have a better picture, but how much will I miss my larger screen? I've always heard never to go down on a tv size because it will feel smaller than it really is considering I'm used to the 50in.
Anyone else mind weighing in on this for me?

About size, all that matters is screen size/viewing distance ratio. It greatly affects immersion but also picture quality. Too far away, you won't enjoy what you're watching, too close and picture becomes bad, because you start noticing aliasing, dithering, etc. (this is particularly true with games, whereas if you only watch movies a bigger screen providing more immersion is imho preferable). It's a matter of finding the sweet spot and if you can adjust viewing distance in your setup accordinlgy.

Since I care more for picture quality than size, when I switched to Plasma last year I actually went down on size (from 46" to 42") and I glad I did this because at my viewing distance games didn't look nice anymore (I had previously gone from 32" to 46"). So you will adapt quite fast, provided you find your sweet spot. In my case everything looks way better at 1.90/2.00m distance on the 42". Picture is razor sharp now, whereas earlier it was blurry on anything other than 1080p.

On another matter, I'd warn you on going lcd after having had a plasma. Total downgrade in every conceivable way. Plasmas are cheap nowadays, look for a Panny S60 or Samsung F5500 even if they'll cost you a few bucks more. IMHO.

Thanks! Appreciate the feedback. Only reason I'm even considering it is because of the deal. I wasn't really in the market for a new TV, but my friend is moving and he's selling me the 46in LED for just $300.

The tricky part is this was more of a budget plasma tv (samsung and 720p) while the led tv is more of a high end model (1080p). I'm curious to see the difference between the two.

I'm not going to completely get rid of my 50in plasma (prob just moving to another room) so if I regret it then I can just switch back.
