Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Don't know where to ask, I will try it in this thread:

I'd like to buy a HDMI cable to hook up my PC to the TV.

But it would be about 10m long, can this cause any issues like input lag?

Nope.

Also, Dragon's Crown looks glorious on my 50" S64. What an amazing looking game.

Just bought and set up a Samsung UN40F6350AF and for the cost ($600) from Costco with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty, it has proven to be a great purchase. Following some more tweaking I think it will serve me well. After a lot of forum crawling I was second guessing an led display, but then I did some real world viewing I am glad I went the route I did.

If you are at all on the fence between plasma and LCD, go see them. Do not drink the kool aid, just see if they meet your expectations. I was focused on PQ, viewing angle, glare, and size. Many posts I read were either poorly informed, fanboy-based nitpicking, or personal preference. I fully admit that I may not have the best eye for PQ, etc, but only a real life demo is going to answer the question(s) for you. I notice myself going overboard with research when I should have simply done it myself!

A real life demo done in conditions that are nothing like viewing it at home. You're right, that'll clear things right up.

Do you know the input lag on this TV? I can never find these things for Costco models since they have a different model number than their "real world" equivalent.

This is true. The best you can get is a hopefully unbiased suggestion/recommendation but in most cases that will never happen because people want to think / believe they have the best and are trying to validate their purchase etc.

The problem with going into big box stores and the like is that the are never set up correctly. Even if they were set up correctly say by being all ISF calibrated some people genuinely do not like a calibrated picture. Unfortunately that is the only real standard there is and the only thing that brings out the real potential of a display.

I would love to have a shop that has all their displays calibrated. I know of one place but they only do audio equipment and projectors. no one does that with displays that I have seen unfortunately.

Although I'm a plasma man, the W900 is really nice looking. Insanely low input lag, impressive blacks for an LCD panel, and them triluminous colors are very attractive...

I'm thinking I might buy it as my exclusively for gaming TV just in time for PS4. I wasn't planning on dropping 2 Gs on a TV this fall what with me planning on buying a new car and all but I think I can stretch it...lol. We'll see i guess.

I own the Sony W900 and while its not cheap, it's totally worth it!! Games looks beautiful on it and the colors are very accurate.

I need advice about a new TV and thought this would be the proper thread to ask for help.

I'm looking for anything that isn't Plasma and I'd prefer it to be 46-55". I'll mostly play games and watch sports. Budget is a little bit over $1100.

Input lag on the F6xxx series is 43ms.

Many resources online state that in game mode the F6300 (and F6350 by proxy) offer 30ms input lag. I have yet to set up a CRT and do not plan to unless the input lag is noticeably bad. If it is, I will post my results.

And that resources would be? The CRT testing method is not accurate. Leo Bodnar numbers come in at 42ms in PC mode (faster than game mode for Samsung) for all sizes in the F6300 range.

Bought at Costco, demoed at a local AV store with an excellent setup. Of course a demo in costco is worthless. Pays to shop around, take advantage of prices and amenities.

That's pretty much the best thing you can do. I was on the plasma bandwagon after reading about tvs on here and other message boards when I bought my tv years back and I even went in arguing with the different reps at the stores talking about "I hear plasma is better." When I went and looked for myself, I found that I prefer how LCDs looked, with one model really standing out to me.. I ended up buying a Samsung B750 and I haven't regretted it.

I've been looking at those new Sony TV's. Sooo tempted to buy the 50"(52"?) top end one as the review on tech radar seemed really positive.

The TV I use just now as a Samsung 3series model I think so this would be a huge upgrade! Plus that super low input lag D:

Saw a $20k 4k TV the other day. Looked really nice with still and slow moving scenes but when things picked up.... My god it was like switching a YouTube video from 1080p to 240p.

Panasonic claims they are moving to 4k in the 2014 lineup. Hopefully they get the lag to a minimum too. The itch to upgrade my 08 plasma is growing, espicially with next gen looming.

Saw a 4k tv at best buy the other day and it looked stunning. I am going to stick with my vt25 for 4-5 more yrs and wait for more content to become available.

After doing a bit more research, observing my viewing habits and the light saturation of my room I'm starting to lean towards LCD, namely the Sony W900. Sure it won't be as inky black as the best plasma but compared to my 2007 Samsung LCD it should be a huge step up.

I saw one briefly last week (was mainly paying attention to the plasmas in the store) and I was impressed.

Any good settings for the new Bravia models? Was broken into early in the year at our holiday home and had the Samsung LCD stolen.

I decided to pickup a new LED the other day but this time I opted for a Sony Bravia R47 rather than a Samsung. Same price but offered better specs and was nicer looking.

This is the first time owning a Bravia so I'm not really aware of how to improve the sound or picture.

Man, all this Sony W900 praise is testing my patience!

A bit overpriced here compared to the US, but it is still cheaper than the Samsung equivalent.

If I buy it it'll mostly be hooked to my PC (gaming+media) + and eventual PS4 next year(ish).

I told myself to wait for next year's models, but I may impulse buy it on the 23rd after my payday... :S

W6 might be intersting, if you can live with less bells and whistles, http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/sony-kdl42w653-201308113237.htm

If I only had 4600 EUR to burn into it, I would not hesitate for a single second.

Picked up a LG 60LA6200 at a really good price on Amazon. Came close to ST60 but input lag was just too much. Also not sold on Plasma. I prefer high contrast brightness of LCD. Plasma tech just looks dull to me now. Thats just my personal preference.

Going from 46" to 60" I'm noticing 1080p content starts to look like standard definition. Not sure about 4k at this point. Cable 1080 content here is so compressed its laughable that a clean 720p mp4 file blows it out of the water. Its really a shame what Comcast defines as "HD'. I just don't see 4k happening in the US anytime soon, because it feels like we've gone backwards on 1080.

OK guys. Maybe you can help me.

I´m looking for a 55" PLASMA.

I thought I could do no wrong with Panasonic, but they seem to have terrible input lag.

Any suggestions?

Has to be a Plasma, has to be 55".

Yes you can. Bumps it up into the 30ms range input lag wise which is still better than most other displays out there.

I just wanted to clarify this since I was reading the review on hdtvtest.co.uk. With the W9xx you're limited to the Impulse Motionflow setting while in game mode. Impulse is a black frame insertion method that somewhat mimics CRTs. It avoids motion interpolation artifacts, but there's a "sizeable amount of brightness drop" according to the site.

I'd say go Panasonic S60 like I just ordered. They don't have a 55" though, so depending on budget you could go 50" ($669) or 60" ($999). They have the lowest input lag (around 35ms before tweaking) than any of the Panasonics I looked at.

For 55" maybe the ST60, but it depends on how lag sensitive you are. My buddy just got one and doesn't notice the lag at all after following some guides to tweak it. He got the lag down to around 40ms I believe.

What is your Price Range?

No idea.. 3K max.

Not sure if 60" will fit on my wall, I have 50" now and I want to go bigger. I´ll check. Thank you.

My Panny VT50 has almost no noticeable input lag in Game Mode.

There is a 55" version of the S60. Maybe not available through Amazon, but I've definately seen it in stores.

So if I get the 65" Panasonic TC-P65VT60, I won't be disappointed right? Universal acclaim and all that?

If you have realistic expectations lol you should be pleased with the PQ of it. The only complaint I have seen really about them is some people think it is not bright enough. That is subjective though. Outside of that I have not heard any complaints on PQ.

Need some advice Gaf...

I've had a 50in Samsung plasma for about 4 years. It's a budget model so it was only 720p. Decent picture but nothing amazing.

I now have an opportunity to buy a 46in LED Sharp that's 120Hz and 1080p. It's from a close friend so I would actually be getting a really good deal on it.

-Basement with decent lighting (for a basement anyway)
-Viewing distance ranges from 5 to 10ft depending on where I'm sitting

So...should I go through with it and sell my plasma? The Sharp TV will absolutely have a better picture, but how much will I miss my larger screen? I've always heard never to go down on a tv size because it will feel smaller than it really is considering I'm used to the 50in.

It is not a guarentee that you will find the Sharp to have a better picture. Yes, it will have a higher (static) resolution being that it is 1080p, but it may or may not have a better picture when it comes to colour accuracy and motion.

I also have a 50" 720p Samsung plasma and my brother-in-law recently bought a Sharp 60" LED. While it looks great with some colourful cartoons, I honestly think it looks poor compared to my plasma when in motion. There is no way to completely remove the "soap opera effect" on it and I find it doesn't look better for HD content either as I find the colour to be less natural. My brother and his wife are happy with it and I would never tell them I don't like it, but both my wife and I think our set looks better despite being a lower spec TV that is almost 6 years old.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I'm one of those weird people who actually likes the soap opera effect for some reason.

Any experience with gaming on either set?

Don't get me wrong though, there is nothing wrong with the Sharp per se... it's just that I can't stand the SOE personally and I don't like the colour saturation, although it might be possible to fix that a bit with settings (not my TV though so I won't force my opinion on them).

Sorry, I haven't done any gaming on the Sharp so I can't comment. I've been gaming on my Samsung plasma though for the last 6 years and have been quite happy with it. It has some lag, about 40-50 ms as far as I can tell, but motion seems pretty good and while it does get IR it also goes away very quickly as well so I haven't worried about it for a long time.

You will get blown*

I made a post detailing the weaknesses of the VT60 a few pages back:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=75199903&postcount=1150

Just keep in mind that I'm very nitpicky, so these issues may not be as big of a deal to everyone, but they are worth knowing about.

Panasonic's VT/ZT and Samsung's 2013 Plasma TVs are the highest rated TVs this year, you will not be disappointed.
Thanks guys.
