Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

so this Sony W series supposed to be really good? (is Sony TVs good again?)

They are excellent! I have a 42" W6 and 55" W8, the W8 series and above have game compatible backlight strobing, it is so good, keeps full 1080 lines of res in motion, transforms how the game looks.

It's beautiful my friend. I got one two weeks ago and have been enjoying it immensely although I haven't gamed on it too much. Blu rays look amazing on it.

I've done quite a bit of gaming so far and haven't experienced any lag issues (there may be lag but I don't feel it at all)...Amazing TV...

Sony has consistently been delivering the best LCD-LED TVs in the past several years. Samsung just would like you to believe otherwise.

Bang for your buck samsung takes it. Color accuracy they take that too. Sony has honestly really only made 2-3 really good LED TV. Most of the time they are not worth the price in comparison.

Sony is not what it used to be. Shame though because the design of their TV's are excellent. I do have to give it to them though for not having advanced w/b or any cms controls they do a good job.

Can anyone comment on the latest Samsung's PC and Game modes? On my previous Samsung (LN46A950), both modes hurt color and picture quality in their own way.

PC Mode would lock the Color setting at 45, which looks pretty washed out / desaturated. Game Mode was pretty bad: locked color temp to normal (which is pretty blueish,) sharpness turned up, dynamic contrast locked on low, and double the input lag.

I've seen mention of the PC Mode still washing out colors on the F8000 at avsforum, and between that and the input lag, I no longer considered that set for purchase when I was still deciding on one. Despite that I do think it's the most eye-catching TV among this year's models. Very nice design, with decent viewing angles too.

Just bought a 55" Sony W90 along with a La-Z-boy recliner.

I think I'm set for next gen. ;)

Still waiting for the ASUS VG248QE to be restocked so I can begin setting up my PC in a HDTV + Monitor configuration.

Dat comfy couch + competitive gaming setup :D

My 65" S64 from Costco was delivered yesterday. Still need to dive into it a bit more, but I'd say right now I'm mostly pleased. Excellent blacks and the colors are very good.

There are a few things I wish were better, but for the size and the price, I can live with a few flaws.

Forgive my grainy photo.

Uh... what? Really? That's not what I've been reading, like, at all.

is there not a "home theater gaf" or "audio gaf"?

want to start looking into putting together a home theater, but don't know where to start etc

I got a 42" for my bedroom this weekend, amazing picture quality, i have a 55" samsung on my living room and the SONY one is much better in comparision, hooked my PS3 there yesterday to play Diablo, pretty good.

I bought the 42W specifically for my gaming due to the good reviews, and the latency being very low. It is a fantastic screen.

I'm wondering are you using Game-Standard, or Game-Original? Personally not too keen on the softer image of Game-Original.

I'm the same. Got a Samsung as my main 3D TV. The picture quality of it is great, but it pales in comparison to the Sony screen.

Looks like both the F8000 and a lot of the Sony's will be on sale at futureshop this weekend. The 55W900A isn't dropping to $2000, but with GTAV around the corner I might pull the trigger at the $2299 level... or I could drop $7K on the 65" 4K TV... nope!

Just paid for a Samsung 60F8500. I have a very bright room and it is the family's main TV for sports, movies, and gaming. I will pick it up next week!

This upgrades a 50" Pio 5020 (720p) from 2004. The 8500 will only cost half as much (well, slightly more) as I paid for that Pio.

Game-Standard, Original makes it look a bit crap! I've got the W6 and W8 next to each other as my wife uses the 42W, and the blacks actually look a little better compared to the W8.
Both superb for gaming though.

I have a optoma hd300x 1080p dlp 3d projector on a 100" grey screen. Obviously you have to darken room but the pq and size are amazing. Hooked up to i7 gtx 770 gaming pc at the minute, xbox one and ps4 on preorder. Gonna be epic. My Samsung 50inch plasma is no comparison. Don't think I'll ever go back to gaming on a tv. Also my oculus rift is delivered tomorrow. Good times to be a gamer.

Awesome! Please give us impressions when you get it and if you notice too much lag in PC mode. I am eyeing eyeing this or the F8000. I read one review that said while in PC mode the lag was 40-50ms. That's certainly not great but the picture quality on this TV is so good for HD broadcasts and Blue Rays I may be able to overlook it.

Good times to be a gamer.

Yep or watching films. I watched a film at a relative's this weekend on a nice Panasonic Plasma and a good (~$5k) sound system. Experience was better than any theater I've ever sat in minus the appeal the crowd sometimes provides. Hope someday to build myself something similar.

I'll let you know as soon as I have tested it a bit as the input lag is my primary concern as well. I don't typically play competitive twitch games anymore but I definitely don't like it if the controls feel disconnected from what I am seeing. I can deal with switching it over to PC mode for gaming even if that might be a slight pain in the ass. I'm hoping a firmware or Evolution update might take care of it eventually as well.

are you using the game modes wwithout changing the settings?

@all
finding the right settings is damn hard, anyone here used hardware calibration?

I gotta disagree. The 55 inch Sony HX929 was consistently ranked as one of the best LCD's of last year. I love it for gaming. It's not cheap, but I'm glad I spent a bit more knowing it will be with me for at least 5 years.

how are the latest smart tv samsung ue f7000 and ue f8000 from a gaming perfomance ?

From what I've read as far as gaming performance and input lag go, f7100>f8000>>>f8500. The 7100 seems to hover around 38-40 in testing with the 8k between 40 and 50 and the 8500 between 60 and 90. In terms of picture quality, the order would be reversed so it just depends on whether you want to sacrifice a little bit of pq for a better gaming experience. Fwiw I went with the 65" f7100 and it gets delivered tomorrow so I'll be sure to type up some impressions once I get it on the wall and calibrated

Yeah when I said they only made 2-3 good ones the HX929 is one of those. By far one of if not their finest set. One of the main reasons is it's a Full Array local dimming backlit with multiple zones.

It's honestly one of teh best LCD's ever made, only eclipsed by the X5FD Elites. The time it came out both of those trumped the current offering from plasma when it came to black level and brightness. If money was no object then they were your best best.

The problem was that performance wise they were better then other sets that year but not enough to warrant the cost. Notice you haven't seen a new X5FD or another full array from Sony? You could get a display that same year that was damn close at 1/4 to 1/3 less in cost. Only to be trumped next year with better everything at again less cost. even the year they came out color accuracy wise they were beat out. Mainly because sony doesn't give CMS or W/B controls which is fine cause they get close enough but thats what killed it for them and then the X5FD couldn't decode cyan correctly.

If you look at any calibration reports between any of Sony and Samsungs higher models for the past few years you will see that color accuracy and grayscale wise Samsungs destroys most manufactures.Every. Single. Year. With exception of Panasonic for grayscale and gamma

Yes. But the better reason to get one is because it is quiet. I don't know how you manage to stick with the old 360 all this time.
I actually have 2 360's, the older one I kept down in the basement with my old CRT TV and my racing wheel/chair just for racing games. It actually doesn't make all that much noise.

The W900A has white balance controls, available in game mode too.

I'm asking again if this color accuracy extends to game mode / pc mode on the latest Samsungs. Because like I said earlier, this certainly wasn't the case on my previous Samsung, which had great color accuracy outside of these modes, but was pretty disappointing while they were activated.

Well my old DLP 50" is officially getting on my nerves now. Finally had to replace the lamp after about 8-9 years but a yellowish smear in the corner that I thought was from the aged lamp is still there :( Time to start hunting down a new TV.

Budget is around $1,000 - less is better of course. Happy with the 50" size though if I could squeeze out a 55 or 60 on the budget all the better.

Right now I have my eye on either:

Panasonic TC-P50S60 50-Inch
or
Sony KDL-50R550A 50-Inch

I'm leaning toward the Sony right now because of the low input lag, the optional 3D and better viewing in light (my TV room is very well lit during the day with windows everywhere and a couple skylights), and no possibility of IR.

The price of the Panasonic is better of course and I've heard great things about plasmas and image quality though.

My priorities are pretty much 50% blu-ray and 50% gaming with the main use of the TV just plain old HD cable.

Thoughts? Even another TV in that price range I haven't run across yet? I'm tempted to buy soon while Amazon is still tax free though I may wait on Black Friday for the heck of it. It's not like my current TV is dead, just ugly.

Uh... what? Really? That's not what I've been reading, like, at all.

What have you been reading? I havent seen any of Sony's flagships that have scored higher then anything that Samsung or Panasonic has made, and has come in at a cheaper price I am looking at the flagship models only. If something lower then that I wouldn't know because I don't look at those models unless one really stands out.

The W900A has white balance controls, available in game mode too.

Is the W900A 2pt or 10pt WB? I'm not sure what is disabled. I tried to check in the owners threads on AVS if CAL-Day and CAL-Night are available in those modes but I'm not certain. I think it should if you put it in PC mode as you are just changing what the input is so ideally I would think it would keep access to the same settings, but hard to say. I know with some models enabling those modes disable any type of processing but they do not disable the calibration controls.

I was looking at both these sets as well, and just went with the S60 (or rather, the S64 from Costco that includes the anti-reflection filter).

However, I don't care about 3D and my TV is downstairs with no windows to worry about. Plus, IR worries are over-exaggerated from what I've read.

If your room is really bright during the day, and you feel like you'll be watching it a lot during that time, you may want to go with the Sony. But I feel like the S60 picture quality is better overall.

Input lag is also great on the S60 (around 30 ms), so I wouldn't worry about that for either set.

EDIT:
Couple pics of my set while watching Amazon Instant stream of Sound City. Pretty bright recessed lighting is on, but there is very little glare.

Get an LCD, for the reason bolded. You'd have to check, but I don't think the cheaper Panny's have the filters to compensate for direct lighting. My ST30 (a step up, though a bit older) isn't quite a mirror, but you can definitely see the reflection of the room it's in if I don't have the blackout curtains closed.

Lol no. The Samsung series 8 models have been one of the best sets for the last 3-4 years. This year's model is ridiculous good (have one myself).

I got the sony w802 and so far I'm not impressed (except the 3D is nice).

Is it supposed to have such terrible viewing angles? I mean my DS isn't much worse. My old Samsung LCD was better. Also the color seems off (comparing it next to my Dell Ultrasharp monitor) and the screen never seems to get black, always light grey or blueish.

When I turn the 3D on the screen gets a lot brighter and better, is there a setting to keep it like that for 2D?

I don't know, maybe mine's defective but I'm really not impressed so far.

With any TV it's worth trawling through the owners thread on the forms (take everything with a grain of salt, there are way more people that come to post complaints and nitpicks than complements.

A lot of recent TV have these "eco" features or auto-dimming that is too agressive and usually blacks, contrast and other things get way better when they are turned off.

Don't know about those viewing angles tho.
