Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

My ST60 came in this morning, and this box is HUGE. I have to wait for my wife to get home so she can help get everything out of the box and we'll set it up together. I guess I'll spend the weekend breaking this sucker in and impressions will follow. I have an inexpensive onkyo home theater in a box kit coming in tomorrow along with some speaker stands, so I'll play around with that too.

Mine should be here tomorrow. Can't wait!

Hey everyone.

Some Best Buy Magnolia locations have started to receive Display models for the new Panasonic. I was lucky and found a store in Canoga Park/Woodland Hills in California. I had called them a few days ago and they said they received a display model, but they were not sure when they would have it up. They called me yesterday to let me know it was going up so me and my fiancée took a drive out to check it out.

The Manager informed me when we arrived that they were one of a few Magnolia stores that received it early and that only the top 50 Magnolia Stores were getting early display models.

So the impressions so far are very positive. The set looks gorgeous and color reproduction is very good. This is THX Certified set and it showed. They had it side by side with a Sony 4k set and a Samsung 4k set. The Sony and Panasonic were running the same feed from the Sony set, which was 4k content. First thing we noticed was the black level was very good on the Panasonic. They had it in Vivid Mode, but for comparisons sake they also had the Sony on Vivid mode. The Panasonic flat out had better color reproduction overall and better black levels.

My fiancée which is not as picky as I am easily said the Panasonic just looked better. White's were more pure, black was more pronounced and the color just seemed to pop more on the Panasonic. I took my laptop cause I wanted to see what text and a desktop looked like and it looked sharper and a little cleaner than the Sony. I had some 1080p content to check out the up scaling and it looked really good.

I did verify and this set does indeed have Display Port, so those with monster rigs (like mine..hehehe) can run 4k resolution at 60fps on a 65" Screen! Finally!!! As promised by Panasonic the set does have HDMI 2.0, but there is a fine line that they need to be careful with. While Panasonic flys the "We got HDMI 2.0 on our set" flag, HDMI 2.0 is only available on the HDMI 4 input. The remaining HDMI inputs are standard 1.4a HDMI. The clerk told me that Panasonic said they will have a firmware update for the remaining 3 ports, but he had nothing specific on that. Browsing the user manual it does state that it is HDMI 4 only that has 2.0 but no mention of upgrading the other ports.

I'm using a Sony SXRD KDS-60A3000, and as long as I use Game/Text Mode it works wonderfully with my PC. I can't notice any lag at all. It's a shame Sony stopped production back in '09.

You'll have to tell us what you think about the input lag, since it's supposed to be pretty noticeable with this screen.

Will do. I'm personally coming off a 9 year old Samsung DLP and I don't play any games online. Anything is most likely a step up from what I was using.

I'm going to do extensive testing once I get it to see how bad it is. On the avsforum I haven't seen anyone complain about it in the official input lag thread and there are a couple really in-depth tests that people utilized so I am hopeful its going to be okay.

anyone know if there is any value in having a smart tv? I have no idea since I have gaming rig hooked up to my plasma, but this is for a very non technical guy. To him using netflix on his ps3 is a pain in the ass, and he could never deal with troubleshooting an htpc.

I recommended a set someone posted a few pages back, but he has it in his head that a smarttv would be good. he is looking to spend around 1K...plasma is no good for him either being as technologically challenged as he is. His level of understanding is at ipad level unfortunately...he doesn't even own a laptop or pc.

I'd always heard that the PS3 nextflix app was one of the best, but I could be mistaken.

Hey guys, I'm looking into buying a ~40" TV and my two main options (due to price) are these two:

Sony KDL-40R470

Samsung UE42F5000

The Samsung is a couple of inches bigger so I'm inclined to get that one. However, both are "100hz" TVs, meaning the panel is actually 50hz, right? And I would turn off any Motion features for gaming, so could the 50hz be a problem?

Hope someone with a 50hz TV or experience with one can answer this.

Most of today's TVs are smart. Especially in the $1,000+ range. I'm going to have my first experience with a smart TV when mine is delivered today but from what I can tell it would be idea for your friend. The remotes have dedicated "smart TV" buttons (sometimes even a dedicated netflix button) that takes your right to the apps and you can load them up from there. No external devices or anything. Seems convenient. I normally glossed over the SmartTV section in the reviews I read about various TVs because frankly I didn't care too much but from what little I read, Samsung is among the better ones. Fast interface, good select, intuitive UI.

Could your budget strech to £520? - http://pricespy.co.uk/product.php?p=1785090
This is getting great reviews (hint: look how low the lag is!) - http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/sony-kdl42w653-201308113237.htm

My new Panasonic 58E60 just got delivered! Didn't have enough time to play with it before returning to work but first blush it looks great. Much bigger screen than my old 50" and the colors look fantastic. Will really get into it later today.

I'm running the slides on my ST60 at the moment. I did cheat a little and played some Super Stardust HD and Resident Evil 4 hd, The lag is a complete non-issue based on how I performed. It MIGHT be an issue if you play online I guess, but as I stated earlier, I don't really play any competitive games online.

Nope, unfortunately :( That's like 600+€ (800 on amazon.es!!) here in Spain, while the other 2 are only 400. I know what I'm getting for that price and I'm not expecting miracles, my main doubt/concern is whether 50HZ can heavily affect gaming.

They can still take 60HZ signals without problems, right? Thinking that every 60FPS game will actually run at 50 and the possible stutter in this day and age, though... that hurts. Is it very noticeable? Any good 60Hz ~40 inches TVs in EU land for a similar price?

I almost bought the ST50, but I know I wouldn't use 3D that often. Saving the $300 for my PS4 was a better decision for me. Do you plan to watch a lot of 3D content?

Don't let anyone fool you. 50Hz is okay for gaming. Actually....when most LED/LCD tv's are going into game mode, the panel is actually going to 50Hz. I've got a 200Hz Bravia and that's nowhere near as fast as my old KDL40W4000 ( 2008 ). So yes, you're gonna be fine, although for me personally, nothing comes close to plasma.

I'm pretty sure that all LCD TVs are 60Hz no matter where in the world you are. They don't make special panels for the European market.

Went from a ~five year old 37" Samsung HDTV (1080p) to 55" Sony W805. I swear the graphics just got twice as good. Probably due to the 4:4:4 Chroma reproduction of the set making the colors pop like crazy. Also I believe I'm feeling the lower latency as well but I'm not sure if it's a placebo effect or not due to the bigger image.
The game looked aliased on the Samsung but now it looks pretty dang good.

Edit: Actually I'm so impressed by this (4:4:4 image reproduction) I made a standalone thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=691121

Alright, I need some advice for my next TV (I haven't bought one in several years). Here are the two I'm deciding between:

Sony KDL-40R450

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AWKBZQQ/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Panasonic

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ARAHBIW/?tag=neogaf0e-20

The first is cheaper, but it'ss smaller with poorer image quality. It does offer one huge advantage in convenience, though: 3.5mm audio port. In addition to being slightly out of my price range, this is what worries me about the Panasonic. I have a decent 2.1 setup that I can only use with such a port (are there converters?). Price is a huge factor, but I don't want to settle for something shitty for the next few years. I hear the Sony has poor viewing angles, but I'm not sure how much this actually matters.

edit: and I guess that Sony TV is less than 400 through Wal-Mart. Tempting!

I just bought the P50S60 based on the stellar recommendations both here and on the AVS forums. I haven't used mine yet, as I'm running slides to break in the screen, but I'm sure it turn out to just as good as everyone says.

Like you, this going to be my main TV for several years. If you can afford the $700, get it. You'll appreciate those extra 10 inches I of viewing. And yes, there are optical-to-analog audio converters: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005K2TXMO/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Hmm, what's strange about that converter is that it has a left and right port, but I only have a single cable for my setup (and stereo sound absolutely works). I suppose you're right--the price difference is negligible in the long run.

Just plug this cable into the converter and plug in your 3.5 stereo cable into it and your 2.1 system. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I23TTE/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Yep, in the long you'll be happy you spent the extra money.

Damn, I downloaded the HD direct feed videos of Driveclub, Killzone Shadow Fall and Forza 5 and watched them on my W653A. It looks absolutely glorius (except for the jaggies, more pronounced in Forza). I can't wait to have my PS4 plugged onto it! :D

Thanks guys, much appreciated :) I feel much more comfortable choosing any of those now.

Plasma will come a little later, whenever I can comfortably afford it! This upgrade is good enough for now.

What's the best time/place to get a 60" VT60? NYC area. I wanna have it before PS4 launches, but if there's gonna be some BF madness I can maybe wait. But a BF deal on something this high end and specific seems unlikely.

The 60" VT60 went down to $1999 on Amazon back in July for a few days, but I haven't seen it that low since then. If there's a deal between now and November, that's probably the price point you're looking at.

Yeah that never hurts. Sweet, thanks.

Looking to get a new TV soon. Probably waiting until late Spring/early Summer of 2014 to get a PS4. With that said, I'm looking to upgrade my area/TV rig for my PS3, Wii U and PS Vita TV (if it comes out anytime soon in NA). Here's what I'm looking for:

-Between $500 and $1000 spending range (not really looking to drop 1K though...)
-Rather have less lag/input issues than a better picture (if that's the trade off in the end)
-Will primarily be used to play games (Watching movies will be secondary).

What's my best option here? Is it wise to wait until the holidays for deals? Don't feel like reading through the entire thread. Seems like a lot of decisions between Panasonic's and Sony TVs. Would highly appreciate some direct recommendations! Thank you!

How big of a tv are you looking for?

I just ordered a Panasonic S60 60" I'm more worried about the delivery because a freight elevator has to be used , I set the time for next Friday. Did you guys really tip the delivery guy ? Is that why the shipping is free on Amazon?

I'm thinking of buying a Bravia KDL42 653A to go along with the ps4.
I think the image quality is pretty good and I really don't need anything bigger than that.

The feature that enticed me the most was the low input lag, even with all motion enhancements that thing won't go over 20ms.. Some sites report 15ms, others 7ms with enhancements off which is awesome if true.

A bit of a noob question: do LED tvs suffer from image burn in? Will I suffer from that with this particular TV? I know that plasmas are usually better but I would have to break the bank to buy a really good one, and besides I'm pretty sure I would fuck it up and end up burning something on the screen. I'd rather avoid being constantly worried someone left the TV on for hours on the same channel and having logos or bars burnt in..

Yes please, was looking into buying it, but read some bad stories about the input lag on the net.

Looking into upgrading for ps4, but want to start using all this new fancy stuff in today's tvs. I have an old 27'' shitty 720p thomson (lol). Anything else You guys can recommend for a budget of up to 1000€?

EDIT: Basically looking for the same recommendation as Yuterald but 50''(+), and don't want to leave out any stuff that I might regret in a year or two.

No burn in man, no worries. :)

What's the best screen size for gaming?

Games don't look good on my 60" LG Plasma from 10-12' away, maybe it's just the quality of the TV itself, but I notice a lot of imperfections in games.

I also notice games displayed in public are usually a 30-42"?

Thank you!

Just another tiny question..I want to get that tv, and I´ve searched a lot online and can´t find it. I live in Europe, and apparently I can only find 42W650 and 42W651´s..Some people told me it is, in fact, the same exact tv, the different codes represent the model´s colour (silver or black). Is that true or is there any tech differences? Cause I really really want to get that tv and every review so far as been on the w653 model..

So, are you liking it so far? Everything I´ve seen about it left me impressed and I really want it..Probably will have to wait till December or January though :(

The last number/letter in a TV model name is usually to show which region or color it is. All W65x models are the same internally.

I see, thank you :)

So with nothing to worry about, I'll try to get the black version. The silver is pretty too but I think black suits it better. 650 it is then :)

Anyone have any opinions on this:
Samsung UN46EH5300 46-Inch 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV

The specs look pretty good, but the price makes me somewhat wary (even though that's sorta the upper limit of what I'm hoping to spend).

Do (true) refresh rates above 60Hz matter when gaming, since everything will be capped at 60 max?

Above 60hz refresh rates is primarily for combating ghosting. Currently no display on the market will accept an input signal over 60hz via hdmi (this MAY be changing with HDMI 2.0, but I'm not positive).

I don't know anything about that particular model, but this may be a similar model (but released in the UK).

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/samsung-ue32eh5000-ue40eh5000-201212192466.htm

Looks like that one is a pretty good bargain for the price. If you can find out if these are equivalent panels, then you might have a winner there.

You actually can force some TVs to accept a 120hz signal.

Yes afaik it's the same tv.

And yes, I'm impressed. Colors and contrast are incredible. I think it's the best tv you can get for that price (IQ wise). Gonna play my ps4 on it! :D

So, assuming I'm not streaming 120Hz content, is there any discernible difference between 60 and 120? I'm really tempted to jump on this TV, since it apparently calibrates nicely and has pretty low lag. I'm just worried that the lack of true 120Hz will be apparent in the near future.

I got an Insignia NS-32E400NA14 32" LED TV yesterday. Been wanting to get a TV for a while cause I've only had an Asus VH242H 24" LCD PC monitor for the past few years and I wanted something bigger than that. I got it for a pretty good price, $280 minus taxes, and it looks pretty good. However, it doesn't look amazing to me. I feel that my Asus monitor has a richer/deeper color to it and I've been trying to get something similar going on my new TV. I've messed around with some of the settings but I'll fully admit that I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to fine tuning these kinds of things to get the best possible image quality. I am using the TV for my 360 and my laptop (I'll use the Asus for my laptop for the most part) and I plan to use it for my Xbox One once that comes out. My question is, what can I do to get the best possible picture out of my new TV for my Xboxes and PC. I don't really care how regular cable TV looks since I don't watch all that much live TV at the moment. Also, and this is a somewhat related issue, I'd like to be able to use my X12 Turtle Beaches on my TV and my laptop at the same time if that's possible. Any info or tips for these issues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
