PlayStation plans 3 Spartacus tiers for as much as $16 per month (GamesBeat)

Sony is looking to expand PlayStation Plus by introducing new features and by integrating elements from PlayStation Now. Bloomberg originally reported about these efforts — which Sony internally calls “Spartacus” — in December. But now GamesBeat can provide some more info on what these new offerings look like.

Spartacus is an evolution of PlayStation Plus with three tiers. It currently calls those tiers Essential, Extra, and Premium — although those names could change between now and when the service launches. The subscription for these programs is monthly and starts at $10 and goes up to $16. And what do each of those tiers get you? Here’s the current plan:

Monthly gamesGame catalogueStreamingClassic
games
Game trialsPrice
PS+ EssentialX$10
PS+ ExtraXX$13
PS+ PremiumXXXXX$16
PS+ Essential is the PS+ that you already know. For $10 per month, you get monthly games that you can add to your library. This works a lot like it already works today.

PS+ Extra, meanwhile, gets you the monthly games and a game catalogue for $13 per month. The game catalogue is a library of hundreds of older, downloadable games. This seems like Sony ripped the download catalogue out of PS Now and popped it into PS+ instead.

PS+ Premium gets you all of the above and then everything else for $16 per month. That everything else includes PS Now’s streaming capabilities. You also get a library of “classic games” as well as a new “game trials” feature. Game trials enables you to download and start playing the full versions of new PlayStation games. This likely has a time-limit function, which is similar to how game trials work on the EA Play service from Electronic Arts.

Again, all of these prices and names could change. But this is the general outline of what to expect from Spartacus. And these features should make PS Plus look much stronger in comparison to Xbox Game Pass. While Sony will not include full versions of its blockbuster games in PS Plus on day one, game trials will at least give a bigger audience a chance to sample those games.

Sony is moving into a testing phase for Spartacus in the next few weeks. And it could announce the details of its new membership program in March — although that’ll depend on whether it is ready to roll out the service.

Ok so basically what you're telling me is the ps+ I use right now (which will become "ps+ essential") will now cost $120 ($150cad) for literally the exact fucking service?

So, no day 1 games but trials for x length/hours ?

Yeah, no.

Also, there's another thread discussing the exact same thing:

That other thread was based on a podcast, this one is a new written article.

This sounds like nothing new, just reshuffling what currently exist.
It'll be about milking you to play those classic games, if they don't make them available to purchase. (Who would want to play those?)

They won't get all 3rd parties in on free trials, so those will be limited. I just dont understand where tier 3 makes sense.

See, here's the problem, Sony and I don't have the same taste in medium to low priced games and they won't put their most valuable stuff on any value priced option.

Same to Microsoft but for now they're pumping cash into gamepass so I'm using it. I know they're trying to undermine ownership so I'll keep buying games too.

I won't renew it long term though.

I like to choose what I play, especially with all the woke crap floating around. Yeah, I see where this is all going.

Curious about this but I don’t see myself paying for both subs or switching from GPU to this, especially for trials.

Still good news as it forces MS to not get too complacent about GP.

16 dollar for the highest tier is fine, i just wanna know what spartacus can offer.
without dayone releases gamepass ultimate at 14.99 make it pass like the poor citizen service. If they wanted to compete with gamepass well this is the wrong way

So the basic version of plus is getting a pay increase effectively?

Not interested in any of these "new" features. I'd actually like a model without any games but online services for like a fraction of the "essentials". Just give me online play and cloud saves and I'm fine.

What? Paying monthly is way stupid since it’s double the price if you don’t cancel it. It’s way better to pay upfront.
Paying monthly means you can afford it.

$180 at once, isn't realistic.

I can't buy elden ring now, since I am over the budget for gaming this month.

Unless you are a person, who can casually spend $200 like it's nothing, then you won't spend that much.

Also $10 is fast food money. Tons of people can afford it, and you can get that $10 back. You can also cancel the plan if you don't like it.

I'll pay it if the classic gsmes can be played using the local PS5 hardware.
This is what I’m hoping for. Really wish to p

$60 at once, not 180.

I'm pretty sure everyone will want this for free. Then they'll cry about no free online. Then they'll cry about the $1 gamepass. Then they'll cry because they're gamers. I'm sure they were crying before this all too, about something out there.

I'll judge this when it's announceded. I'm happy with ps plus as is. PS now would be decent but streaming is terrible - no if, ands, or buts about it. I tried Sonic on there and the lag made the game unplayable. It's just too fast paced.

Honestly, I find with subscription services it devalues the products. Maybe I'm old school (I am), but I spend more time scrolling Netflix/Prime etc than I do watching anything. I found the same with my short PS now experience. I downloaded some games and never even opened them. Not really sure why either. It just seemed to make them unappealing to me. It's an odd experience.

Guilty as charged. If they lock classic titles behind some subscription model I'm gonna
write some strongly worded letters and give them a firm handshake.
Im betting people will eat this just like they ate NSO. People don’t care, they just pay and that’s it.
