Point n Click Adventure GAF 2015 - Back with a vengeance

I don't feel like any of their games goes beyond good.

I like them but they all just feel nice.

Of course I haven't played all of them and I won't be surprised if they eventually make a really great game that I will love.

Sums up how I feel. I've liked what I played but I won't look back fondly on any of them in twenty years like I do with LucasArts and other games in the genre.

its very good. If the comedy from the first one was a deal breaker, i dunno you might not like this one either. But IMO the series is worth more than humor, the story is also good and good puzzle design.

I also don't find the first game very funny but I bought the second one anyway. All I can say is that their production values went way up. The writing seems about the same. There are still tons of references to other books and games and all of the major characters returned.

I should really play more than two or three hours. But, you know, other games.

Thanks for the comments. Maybe i didn't give the first game enough time or maybe it wasn't clicking because i missed all the references that apparently are in the game (i'm not a fantasy book/movie/game expert). I think i'll buy this one and give it another chance. I do wonder if you need to have played the first game to enjoy this one though since many characters from the first game seem to return in this one.

Just noticed Lost Horizon 2 on Steam, releasing October 1st.

Haven't even played the first one yet, despite owning it.

WHAT?! October 1st huh? Wow I haven't heard like anything for almost a year and I find this out haha. This is good news. Replayed the first game a couple times. I know it's different and all but I'd love to revisit the story and characters. Will definitely buy.

Hmm wonder if I did play Lost Horizon yet or not...I remember playing a game where the dialog was dull and stopped playing it after an hour.

Non the less I do hope this game will be good :)

Just finished Broken Age. Really enjoyed it however there seems to be a huge discrepancy between the puzzle difficulty between act 1 and 2.

Act 2's puzzle difficulty felt like it hit a near perfect balance, but I can see how the jump from Act 1's puzzles would stand out. Still, I love how Act 2 had a few puzzles that encouraged using a pen and paper to sketch out solutions or making a chart to sort collected data. That felt like the heart of being a throwback to old-school point and click adventures.

well, without a doubt, this a direct continuation. And you will likely feel a bit lost with the plot if you didnt play the first. But i think you should be able to enjoy it anyway and get used to it quickly. If you really wanted you could always read a summary of the first.

Ugh Blackwell 1 looks so pixelated on my iPad! Is there any way to make it look less...splattery?
Not sure what you mean. It's incredibly low resolution, like the old Lucasarts and Sierra games, but it looks no different on an iPad than it does on Windows.

I decided to give Book of Unwritten Tales another go so i bought Tbout 2 on PS4 (despite not liking the first game). Unfortunately, i feel the same as i did with the first game. It bores me, especially the dialogue. I'm the type of adventure gamer that always exhausts every dialogue tree and click every hotspot, but in this game it feels like a chore. For a game that is meant to be funny, i don't find it funny at all and i haven't laughed once. It's really strange and i can't pinpoint exactly why it doesn't work for me. I wish i had used the money to buy SOMA instead...

Little side note on the matter.
I'm playing Dropsy and got stuck. Went to look for a walkthrough, but apparently only video walkthrough only exist nowadays. Good ol' GameFAQs is sort of dead too.
Am I the only one to absolutely DESPISE and hate video walkthrough, especially for P&C adventure games?

I'm the opposite. I've been loving all the references to other games and the writing - on the whole - has been really good.

Hear hear. Ran into that issue with Stasis; I ended up scrounging through every discussion topic I could, I don't want to have to watch a video to figure out what to do next.

There's a thread on the game's Steam forum where the devs are posting hints. This might help you.

Apparently, Fizbin received funding for The Inner World 2 but they still need to find some additional funding to make it happen. Iirc, i quite enjoyed the first one so i hope they do get the opportunity to make a sequel.

Oh wow didn't know a sequel was in the works. The first game was quite fun so I'm looking forward to this!

Yup I hate video walkthroughs, at least for adventure games...

Check Gameboomers for guides. They still post walkthroughs for newer games. First place I check.

Still no recent word on Day of the Tentacle HD?

DF said last week that it will have new, high resolution art in the original style, and that none of the previous (cancelled lucasarts) remake art assets will be used. Original art will also be available.

So it *sounds* like we're getting exactly what we hoped for.

Yes, videogame walkthroughs are the worst. Have a problem with a single puzzle? Have fun looking through the whole video (or sometimes videos) for that few seconds that shows how to solve it while trying to avoid everything else. It's even better when the game isn't fully linear and throws few puzzles at you at once (meaning: most good P&C games).

Personally I love (loved? dunno if it's still supported) Universal Hint System. Instead of full solutions you are first given a set of hints that can help you solve the puzzle on your own. It's really helpful when you're stuck just because you forgot to check that one tiny pixel in the corner, or forgot about a random fact a character said few hours ago that is essential to solving the puzzle.

A news item that i missed: at Gamescom, Daedelic's announced that The Devil's Men is also coming to Xbox One. I hope it's coming to PS4 too. That game looks visually stunning.

Okay good...some news is good news
