Point n Click Adventure GAF 2015 - Back with a vengeance

Blackwell bundle is 65% off on steam, just purchased as I've only played the last chapter. Hope these are even half as good as that one.

Seems there are some good deals going on for the Halloween sale at the moment. Any fans of the Lost Crown games? I've been hungry for something like them I feel but I'm hesitating.

The Lost Crown is very, very good. Excellent atmosphere, puzzles, story, etc. It has two major flaws:

1 - tons of backtracking, no fast travel
2 - dialogue can't be skipped (e.g. if you repeat conversations), and the main character talks slowly

Absolutely worth playing, though.

Not quite. Got the last one in a humble bundle, had no idea it was part of a series but I absolutely loved it. Not ideal to have jumped in there but I'm excited to go back and play through the others in the right order.

May I ask, how was the story to you? Given that most plot points and/or important characters in the game were either first introduced in previous games or at least referenced previous games, I imagine the story could be a little confusing for someone who hasn't played them.

mild and vague Blackwell series spoilers inside

In a way Blackwell Epiphany was disappointing. Previous games felt much more personal because Rose was mostly dealing with her problems and those of individual deceased, Epiphany was in the end about the generic "saving the world/anonymous masses" thing. It's hard to get as invested in that. I would really, really prefer something more intimate to close this series. Unbound is fan favorite for a reason.

Thanks, I'll pick it up then. I heard that a new like "mid-game" came out for the series and then the next game is coming up soon? Oh just googled and it seems to be a quad-series. That's cool. I've been dry on supernatural/horror PnC games since like Black Mirror and so hopefully this will scratch that itch.

The TJD3 kickstarter was quite slow towards the middle but as always it sped up during the final days. Made the beefed up soundtrack goal and that was one I really wanted to make it because music is like one of the main reasons why that game still means a lot to me. Man the waiting is going to suck. Guess I'll look forward to the 1&2 replay closer to the game's release.

Man I love their company's story too. How the depressing winter was coming, they decided to close up shop and move to Tanzania for a little while and all their ups and downs. Really wish them the best and will happily await the final chapter next year.

It was surprisingly ok. I can see how from the perspective of someone who played through them all in order it might seem like you couldn't possibly follow the backstory connections but I felt like I understood everything that was going on. Maybe it didn't have quite the significance it could have if I'd experienced meeting certain characters before but hopefully some of that will work the other way round. Though I am trying not to remember too much about the end villain as it seemed like it was meant to be something of a shock. Been a while since I played but I'm pretty sure I remember them being
a relative who had the same ability as Rosa?
Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Just bought a brand new laptop and I'm ready to dive back into the world of Point And Click adventures. Could someone give me a couple of recommendations based on that I love these themes:

-cyberpunk
-detective noir
-comedy
-futuristic

The Blackwell series touches on a bit of that. Not as much as some other examples but you should play it anyway because it's brilliant.

Hi gaf
Pnc is my favorite genre, but I rarely have time to play. I am thinking of buying me a tablet just to play my steam pnc games like gabriel knight (with I bought on haloween sale) when Im on the train or in bed :/

Is there anyone else who tried this. What kind of tablet do you need, does the
touch input work?

How fo you play your adventure games?

The best you could do is buy a Windows 8.1 / Windows 10 tablet (NOT Windows RT) that runs x86 system - you will be able to play most P&C games then, since, let's be honest here, most of them aren't really resource hungry. And a lot of indie adventure games run on ASG engine - something that even a 15-year-old low-budget laptop could handle.

If you'll decide to buy an Android tablet, aside from various adventures game ports released in recent years (both classics and new games), there's also ScummVM emulator available on the Play Store. It will allow you to play almost every oldschool point & click adventure game (here's a compatibility list: http://scummvm.org/compatibility/). The Android version isn't perfect, though, and due to touch interface pixel hunting (so popular in old games) can be annoying, but it's something one can get used to.

OK who here has a Nintendo DS or a 3DS?
Cuz if you do, def. track down Cing's games for the NDS, they're like PnC adventure games but have their own charming feel to them.
The games they made include

Cing sadly closed down 5 years ago, but their games remain fantastic to this day

What are some good, recent P&C games for PC? I've already bought ROM and Dropsy.

Technobabylon, off the top of my head ^^;
Oh and Broken Age since it finished recently.
While not EXACTLY PnC games, they're still worth checking out since they're of the Adventure genre:
Life is Strange
Tales from the Borderlands

Both finished recently and were quite good. I've not played a single BLands game yet but really enjoyed TftB.

Ah and if you don't mind Visual Novels, there's Higurashi, although only Chapter 1 is available atm with Ch. 2 releasing in a few days.
Higurashi will scare the ever loving shit out of you. I played the iOS ver. on my phone and there were times which I just wanted to go all 'NOPE *Exit game*' but I kept on playing.

Tales from the Borderlands is legit and the best Telltale game so far.

No lies detected!

It's not a spoiler unless you know who that is, otherwise it can be a random NPC.
But we know its adorable and we all want one now.

most of these already mentioned but i'll repeat for emphasis:
technobabylon
anna's quest
life is strange
fran bow
episode 1 of the new kings quest

Those are all *really* good games. This has been a great year for adventure.

Damn forgot about King's Quest! Then again Ep. 2 has been taking a while for it to be released ToT

I played and loved them all. Especially Hotel Dusk. I still think of that game quite often even years after playing it.

Cing was definitely my favorite developer. Always a joy to see them brought up.

Alright everyone it's time to play Armikrog!

Patch details
http://steamcommunity.com/games/334120/announcements/detail/740074682356507901
  • Added custom context sensitive cursor
  • Fixed bug that allowed player to watch "Finding P" cinematic multiple times
  • Fixed bug where Beak Beak would only sit on buttons if facing right
  • Added visual feedback to puzzles that need to be unlocked
  • Fixed a variety of issues where Beak Beak could become stuck while flying
  • Other minor bug fixes
The custom cursor is the one thing this game needed most IMO, gonna play it for a bit now and progress.

This year has been too good for adventure games. I'd argue maybe even the best single year for them... maybe ever? Definitely since the 90s. So many good ones.

I just wish I had time to play them all. Beat the hell out of king's quest ep 1 and have a ton on my backlog.

Also Stasis, Anna's Quest, Dead Synchronicity and Book of Unwritten Tales 2

Pretty much all of those are on my wishlist. Should have picked up Anna's Quest from that indie sale not too long ago but I knew it would just sit in my backlog so I didn't. Really need to pick up Stasis too. Looks really atmospheric and creepy.

Whatever save bugs these games had were fixed.

...and now they are on Steam.
I might consider getting them off GOG as I have them wishlisted i think.

From the 90's? Huh, never heard of these at all. Lovecraftian old-school PnC, that certainly sounds up my alley. Anyone tried them?

I'm playing Black Mirror for the first time, I didn't know this game until a few days ago, and I really like it. It's been years since I could play point 'n clicks (my previous PC could not even have run a 2003 game like Black Mirror).

It's a fantastic, long PnC. Love that game so much. Check out the sequels too. Not made by the same team but they are great continuations and the artwork is beautiful!

Thanks for the heads up on those COC games too. Didn't realize they were on Steam/GOG. May pick them up on GOG.

I played Shadow Of The Comet when it came out, very strange controls for an adventure game, but the atmosphere of the game was great, it nailed the feeling of foreboding right beneath the surface of the old seaside town in Lovecraft stories.

Shadow of the Comet is one of my fav of all time. It really nails the lovecraft vibe in my opinion. The puzzles are pretty tough and some are really, really dumb. There are tedious some labyrinths at the end of the game. Also, most of characters portraits are straight tracing of famous actors. Don't be surprised if you see Jack Nicholson or Robert Mitchum.

Prisoner of Ice is a nice point & click with some really cool graphics but the story is uh... ok, I guess ? It uses the cthulhu mythos sure but has a very different take on it. It's super short.

Those steam descriptions feel like Chinese whispers to me. They got the characters and places names all wrong.

Anyone pick up Prominence yet? There is only one Steam review and the dude had to give the game a thumbs down mainly on the controls making him go insane. I've been following this for a while because the premise sounds cool but from the start I was skeptical on their character movement choice.

I'm late tot his but jshackles (creator of Enhanced Steam) has been streaming for Extra Life and is about an hour into Blues and Bullets Ep. 1

I want to echo that this game is worth picking up, it's similar to Telltale style gameplay but the story gets engaging.
